@IzzyOnDroid #opensource at its best:

I recently installed vector pinball from @fdroidorg - great to kill some time, and especially fun because of the sound effects and background music. Out of curiosity I followed the link to the README in it's github repo. In it, the author thanks the guy who added the sound effects and music, who wanted to try out a sound library for android and therefore sought out a silent open source game and created sounds and music for it. He wrote an article about it here: twittering.com/webarchive_arti…

So thanks to this exemplary #FOSS collaboration I'm having a good time, whenever I have a five minute break.

Here's an early look at some fun content we're launching next week!

We're calling it "Meet The Team." It's a series of conversations with each member of the #Thunderbird team, about stuff like:

☑️ When they fell in love with tech or software programming.

☑️ What attracted them to #OpenSource.

☑️ What their day-to-day looks like hacking on Thunderbird

☑️ And whatever else we decide to ask them and they're willing to answer!

We'll start with @alecaddd's origin story... Stay tuned for more!

🕵️‍♂️ Today, the Open Source Programme Office (@EC_OSPO) held a Secrets Management Hackaton for the developers from the 🇪🇺 Commission.

The goal was to remove secrets from the internal projects' codes so that more 🇪🇺 projects can become #opensource and be shared on code.europa.eu.

Recently I've found a lightweight modern #opensource #audio #recorder app for #Android called #RecordYou. I like it that much so I've attempted to submit some #screenReader #accessibility improvements.
Let me know how do you like it once it's accepted.

This is my first experience with #Jetpack #Compose so bear with me and try to suggest improvements if you can please.

New phone who dis? It's real!
The #Librem5 is almost like the #PinePhone's big sibling (slightly more specced up) - a Linux pocket computerbox bringing desktop covergence to a phone - and @purism has contributed most of the code that allows Gnome/Phosh/Linux on a phone to resize desktop apps. Happy to finally get mine and support this project! Purism got slammed by supply chain issues during the pandemic and is now catching up on shipping ❤️ See puri.sm/ #foss #opensource #linux

Absolutely appalling story from the maintainer of core-js: github.com/zloirock/core-js/bl… #opensource

If anyone can help, the maintenance burden of this project is starting to weigh on me. I don't want to give it up, but without more help I may have no other option.

#Opensource funding challenge:

Go into your main project and, assuming it uses #npm, run “npm fund”

Pick 5 projects that don’t seem well-funded, and donate to them

Just did so (admittedly using “npm fund” for the first time), donating a little to @ljharb, @sindresorhus, @fb55@twitter.com, @paulmillr, and @wooorm

(Consider boosting to encourage more contributions)

Thunderbird 115 "Supernova" will be intuitive and welcoming to new users, while remaining familiar and comfortable for our veteran users.

See how we're accomplishing that balance with this preview of the new Folder Pane: blog.thunderbird.net/2023/02/t…

And this week's #Linux and #opensource news video is finally here!

In this one, we have confirmation that #Windows 11 sends data to third parties after a fresh install, without user consent, we have @fedora moving to Flathub in their next release, an AI tool that violates #FOSS licenses, @thunderbird sharing a roadmap and some interesting history, and @gnome Software getting some nice performance improvements:

I am so glad patents were a later invention of Humanity.

Had the person who 'invented' fire patented it with our current intellectual property laws and convoluted ways of preserving the rights forever, we would have never left the stone age.

#OpenSource has always been the way of advancing our quality of life.

Our ability to collaborate is our superpower.

#Monocle is #OpenSource eyewear:

"a pocket sized #AR device for the imaginative hacker."

"...tiny heads-up display which clips onto your existing eyewear. It’s packed full of powerful hardware which is perfect for when you’re on the go. It connects to your mobile phone over Bluetooth, and includes a few handy sensors such as touch buttons, camera and microphone. The included FPGA is perfect for #computerVision, #AI or graphics acceleration directly on the device."

I just had whatever the opposite of 'future shock' is - I stumbled upon a telescope proposal from 2001 and I wondered if the #latex would compile - of course it did, and the proposal looked exactly as it should have.

In related news, I wrote my thesis in Word 98 and the next version refused to open one of my chapters for no obvious reason.

Plain text and openly documented image formats are definitely the way to future proof your work.... #astrodon #opensource #openscience #TeXLaTeX

What a conference! Thanks so much to @openuk for inviting me to speak yesterday. Lots of fun on the Sonatype stand today!

Also managed to speak to EM360Tech yesterday on #OpenSource (please ignore the spot on my forehead) 😂

Curious what #OpenSource & #FreeSoftware advocates propose for building a culture of accessibility in their teams.

Hundreds of companies showed up for #FOSDEM & are at #StateOfOpenCon right now.

As a movement, how do we:
- orient new people to our teams?
- ensure compliance are set up and maintained?
- keep up with best practices for sharing our code/ideas?

#SOOCon23

What a great first day today at @openuk #StateOfOpenCon with @debbryant to represent the @EclipseFdn
There's a vibrant local #opensource community gathering with people from all over the globe.

If you're looking for #privacy, the absolute best option is probably setting up your own #homeserver, but if you don't have the technical know how, the time, or the inclination, the next best thing is a #NAS!

These little things let you store files, photos, host websites, run containers, backup your computers, run office suites, all with simple GUIs, and can be cheaper than cloud storage.

Let's take a look at why you probably need a NAS at home:

Hmmm, is #opensource now public infrastructure (the same as roads and utilities)? Eric brewer and @AmandaBrock discuss and think so, do you ? #SOOCon23 #StateOfOpenCon23

VP of Infrastructure @ Google Eric Brewer:

"#OpenSource is critical public infrastructure"

Effective curation is essential & an existential issue if we don't get it right.

Interesting metric, at the #stateofopencon #SOOCon23 Damani Corbin from Boeing said they found that 1 out 6 developers contribute to #opensource

So good to see both #Diversity & #OpenSource as #ForceMultipliers

We can learn so much more by being #Open & making sure we are more #inclusive.

Massive thanks to our #opensource policy colleagues, and to our partners at @gloshospitals and Polygeist for really focussing on the real question around #AI: what it means to use it properly in order to improve patient experience.

Speaking of the #stateofopencon , I will be giving a talk this afternoon. The talk is the supervillain guide on how to destroy an #opensource community. While for most people, I would strongly dissuade you from following the plays, if you are a budding supervillain, the content will be educational.
