Sketch Friday is here! I need to trace some of these. Been doing sketches and leaving the vectors to others, cheating myself of the Inkscape pleasures.

There's a nice article out there by @jzb summarizing @matt's recent #OSSNA presentation on his work on #AccessKit and "Newton", the new #accessibility architecture for #Wayland and the future of #GNOME & #Linux for assistive technologies: https://lwn.net/Articles/971541/

Endless OS 6 is bringing us into a new era. This major update focuses on three key pillars:

For our fellow nerds (you’re reading about Linux on the Fediverse, we see you!), dive into the release notes for more details:

https://support.endlessos.org/en/endless-os/release-notes/6

And of course, thank you to the free & open source projects & communities of Linux, Debian, and GNOME for many of the improvements we’re shipping in Endless OS 6. We strongly believe in open source, and would not be able to have the impact we do without standing on the shoulders of the projects we build upon. 🧡

Very happy and proud of this collaboration between @codethink @gnome and @sovtechfund

https://www.codethink.co.uk/articles/2024/GNOME-OS-systemd-sysupdate/

Our goal is to make GNOME OS a daily driver for QA and finalize the migration, but this work will be fundamental to the future of all secure image based / immutable Linux distributions.

Just watched it and it is really interesting. I am so fascinated by these completely alternative ways to interact with a computer.
The screen reader does not tell what it can see on the screen, but rather communicates directly the interface of an app to the user, its structure and content.
I hope this new accessibility stack will be ready as soon as possible! It will be like an update from #GNOME 1 (or 2?) to current (right now 46) for sighted users.

Got very excited by @matt demo of AccessKit integration in #GTK

AccessKit is a cross-platform abstraction for accessibility infrastructure written in Rust.

His work will bring a11y support for GTK on macOS and Windows as well as for the new accessibility architecture on Linux code-named "Newton".

I contributed to GNOME Shell! It's just a one-liner, but still, it's a contribution!

I added touchpad gestures so you can now change workspaces not just with a 3-finger swipe, but also a 4-finger swipe (or any amount of fingers larger than that, if you're feeling really adventurous).

Reminder: instead of using StackOverflow for your questions about GTK and the GNOME software stack, use the GNOME Discourse instance:

You can also use it for applications and the overall GNOME desktop.

Disappointed to see pages given to in-person events and financial reporting in the latest GNOME Foundation report, but not a single mention of environmental reporting or the work multiple people have done to allow remote participation in GNOME events.

This stuff is important. We cannot keep doing business as usual and ignoring the emissions elephant in the room.

Why is it so hard in #Ubuntu and with #Gnome to show thumbnails of the screenshots I made, so I know which image to select without painstakingly opening them one by one from separate file window?

There's many images in my screenshot dir, all having thumbnails, except those created in the last 5 days. Why no thumbnails here? Why?

I have a huge amount of appreciation for the fact that Nautilus / #GNOMEFiles can seamlessly pattern-select, batch-rename and move files both from its treeview and from search results… all with keyboard shortcuts! *Extremely* useful to clean up filenames.

Today, in someone else's messy folders, I was able to cleanly rename everything and eliminate at least 40 duplicates in a directory that contained over 180 files, most of which were in the wrong locations.

Shoutout to Fina Wilke's Warp! Such a nice, self-contained way to just send stuff between devices. Works like a charm for both my 5GB music folder and that Markdown document I wanted to bring with me on my laptop to do some editing while away from my room. Take it for a spin and experience the magic for yourself!

The performance improvement in the #GNOME Files app is fantastic (particularly, opening a directory with many entries is almost instant now). Thanks to whoever fixed that 🙏

@thomholwerda BTW, found this new gem via the Phoronix forum: #KDE dev arguing with #GNOME folks about their arrogant icons handling which is breaking on other desktops:

GNOME: »Icon themes are not a very prominent feature in current app development […]«
LMAO

KDE: »If this breaks GNOME, it's because you folks chose to repurpose an FDO icon theme to be something it wasn't designed to be which breaks its non-GNOME consumers.«

Apple ecosystem is overrated, welcome to the gnome ecosystem 🤓 (this is mostly a demo and you should not rely on these in a daily basis in a production environment)

One of my daily-driven laptops is getting a new #Linux system installed. I'm not sure whether I should stay in my familiar, cosy vanilla @gnome world – including my personal customisations, or whether I should finally seriously consider running the equally interesting #KDE for a longer term.

(No, other desktop environments are not really an option at this point)

After more annoyances that Gnome/RedHat is pulling lately ( https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/adwaita-icon-theme/-/issues/288 ), I just donated to #Linux #Mint, instead of my original intention, #Gnome.

The Gnome Project is a wall-garden, but not of the Apple kind. It's a club of mostly #Redhat programmers & a few select others, and either you're in it, or you're not. Your user needs, your bug reports, your patches, all end up on /dev/null. They listen to no one. Never have, never will.

So, my money went to a fork.

GNOME will be mentoring 8 new contributors for Google Summer of Code 2024

We are happy to announce that GNOME was assigned eight slots for Google Summer of Code projects this year!

GSoC is a program focused on bringing new contributors into open source software development. A number of long term GNOME developers are former GSoC interns, making the program a very valuable entry point for new members in our project.

In 2024 we will mentoring the following projects:

Project TitleContributorAssigned Mentor(s)
Add TypeScript Support to WorkbenchAngelo Verlain ShemaSonny Piers
Port Workbench demos to Vala, build a new Workbench Library, and replace the current code searchBharat TyagiSonny Piers

As part of the contributor’s acceptance into GSoC they are expected to actively participate in the Community Bonding period (May 1 – 26). The Community Bonding period is intended to help prepare contributors to start contributing at full speed starting May 27.

The new contributors will soon get their blogs added to Planet GNOME making it easy for the GNOME community to get to know them and the projects that they will be working on.

We would like to also thank our mentors for supporting GSoC and helping new contributors enter our project.

If you have any doubts, feel free to reply to this Discourse topic or message us privately at soc-admins@gnome.org

Hi all. Hoping there are some #blind #linux users out there that can help me out. I'm using an old computer, not the one I mentioned in my previous posts, but a different one, and #Orca isn't speaking. I originally installed #Ubuntu Mate, but Orca was freezing a lot, so I switched my #DesktopEnvironment to #KDEPlasma. It seemed like a lot of things were inaccessible, though, so I decided to try #Gnome. I installed Gnome, chose GDM as the display manager, and restarted the computer. Now, Orca works on the login screen but nowhere else. It seems to be running, and when I run "orca --replace" in the terminal, I get an error about something only working with X11. I've been able to tell that by scanning the screen with #SeeingAI on my #iPhone. I need to get Orca up and running again so I can use my computer. What's the best way to do this, preferably without sighted help, as my mom and stepdad aren't good with #technology.
