I wrote about #Project2025 (the frightening blueprint for a Trump presidency) and its impact on #disabled people, #disability rights, and digital #accessibility. Feedback always welcomed. lflegal.com/2024/07/project-20…

I'd like to boost this, but:

1. There's no alt text
2. There doesn't seem to be any link to the original source

In the interests of accessibility, avoiding disinformation and getting your post the most reach possible, would you consider fixing these two issues?

Thanks!

For any enthusiasts of legacy assistive tech, it seems the first source code of the Talks Screen Reader for Nokia 9110 Communicator has been published by one of the original devs. Unbelievable to think that it all started off as a bunch of prerecorded messages supplemented by the ability to spell anything it doesn't have ready letter by letter and plugging in external synthesizers and Braille displays via the serial port:

A new “continuous sidewalk” in #Kitchener. The design differs from regular sidewalks in that it doesn’t dip down to road level at intersections. It continues at an uninterrupted height. This slows cars turning onto the street + reinforces pedestrian priority through the intersections. Same at the driveways, so you don’t get the up-down “roller coaster effect” when you’re #walking, #cycling or using a wheelchair.

So @ShaunOfTheShed thinks that as a result of the X/Twitter iOS app issue being resolved so quickly, we should rethink the need to demand that there are dedicated #accessibility teams within companies, but what do you think? The Fedora Accessibility Working Group presented to our highest decision-making committee on the state of accessibility in our distro. It's packed with information, context, and perspective for where we are today and how we can change things for the better.

10 years ago I wrote about *not* using positive `tabindex` values. Today I added a warning about two Google web-dot-dev articles that a reader thought *promoted* it:
adrianroselli.com/2014/11/dont…

At what point will people recognize that #accessibility info from that site should be ignored?

Filed two issues:

*sigh* again, privacy focused tech locks us out by designing a document solution that doesn't work well with the keyboard and or screen readers. In my brief testing I couldn't review any text I typed, at all, nor review a document someone else made as a test. The menu bar items also didn't have labels on them, it seemed. Ok, in an hour, i'll be starting this up. High temps, high effort and high complexity, what oculd go wrong? Let's dig into the #screenReader #accessibility of #jupyter notebooks, a tool prevalent in #dataScience, #python #programming in general, #machineLearning and therefore also practically all things #ai etc.
See you then over at twitch.tv/ic_null and youtube.com/@blindlycoding #goingLive #twitch #youtube #selfPromo

ok ok ok, we covered #jupyter last week. Our #datascience adventure continues with checking into the #accessibility of #google CoLab. Is it better than jupyter? Worse? Are there tools to make it better? How's a #blind person even do #ML and datascience anyway? Come see in just over 2 hours at twitch.tv/ic_null and youtube.com/@blindlycoding #python #programming #coLab #selfPromo

SO when the #accessibility testing, advocating and fixing becomes a bit much it can be rather cathartic to, rather than take " we'll maybe at some point get to this eventually possibly maybe" , you just fireball your obstacles out of existence.
I do gaming stoofs too on this tiny little #twitch channel simply called Zersiax, and will be checking out some #diabloIV over there in half an hour. If the new #openSSH vuln is making you sad or the ladybird dev's got you down on your luck, come see stuff getting exploded, it helps, I promise :) See you then, over at https;//twitch.tv/zersiax #selfPromo #gaming #noTechStuffForAChange

Not sure if I've talked about this here, but there are like, tons of stuff here. I'm gonna try that Linux distro through Crostini on my old ChromeBook that I don't do anything else with anymore. The VM's over the Internet are really cool too! The AT Museum is cool. And I'm curious to see if the Windows 2000/XP on **Android** works. That'd be trippy.

How People with Disabilities Use the Web

#disability #accessibility

w3.org/WAI/people-use-web/

Last night i tested some apps with text to speech just out of curiosity. Just listening that the things it depict sound right at all.

I can't fully test things because i am not in a spot to do so, but this is something anyone can do really. Enable text to speech, click around your app, make sure that all fields, buttons, texts and things are described. Make also sure that you can use keyboard only to move around.

If you want to help with #Linux #accessibility this is something anyone could try to do and fix! It will not make things perfect necessarily but it really does help. You dont have to even write code, you can document things and then make a bug report!

I learned a lot from this @LateNightLinux podcast episode and i highly recommend anyone who makes apps and websites to listen it! Even if youre not on linux!

I can already announce that next IC_Null stream, this tuesday at 3 PM EST, is about the #accessibility of notebooks like #Jupyter, #googleColab, the #VSCode implementation of this concept. If you do #dataScience, #machineLearning, even the polarizing #AI stuff, you are going to run into this at some point. Can a #screenReader user use these properly? Where's the #accessibility hurdles? Do any of these work better than the others? These are all things I'll try to go into.
See you Tuesday, 3 PM ESt over at https;//twitch.tv/ic_null or youtube.com/@blindlyCoding #selfPromo

The state of Unix/Linux accessibility is even worse then I feared 🙈 . Fedora has been shipping with a broken screen reader for NINE YEARS?

Orca doesn't work on any distribution that ships with Wayland by default? 😭 (thanks @aral for bringing it my attention)

Do all the distributions and such know that next year they should be accessible?

I can't code and I am not familiar with testing desktop apps, but I would really like to know how I can help to fix this.

(allthough it shows a bigger problem in open source and it's culture)

Read more: ar.al/2024/06/23/fedora-has-be…

Luckily the Newton Project should fix this blogs.gnome.org/a11y/2024/06/1…, but still: it shows accessiiblity is often an afterthought.

Freedom isn’t freedom if it’s only for abled people.

Then again, there’s a reason you don’t see the word “freedom” in “open source.”
