I am here once again asking you to switch to #decentralized solutions, the answer is never centralization

Hi everyone, I'm on a project, and I've got some queries about #ScreenReaders and symbols. This will also be helpful for me in general.

1. When using a screen reader to read something like this:
... two white spheres (hydrogen) ...
will it read 'two white spheres open bracket hydrogen close bracket?

2. When reading H2O (with the 2 as subscript), will it read H subscript 2 O?

3. Finally, with δ (which I think is delta), accompanied by a superscript plus after it, will it simply read delta superscript plus sign?

Thank you!

That highly depends on user's particular settings. For instance, I'm a developer and I use very fast, but very robotic TTS with poor intonation, it suits my pace and habits. So for me, yes, it would read everything. Not sure about the subscripts though, probably not. but what you can do is to spend more time and process this by some tool that would interpret LaTex and output MathML or MathJax. That way at least some screen readers would interpret it as mathematical notation. #Accessibility

Last I checked, super/sub-script support was kinda crap. At least under default settings, settings with some modifications, and default voices.

What CSS you use can also impact it.

I filed three bugs in 2022 and they are still open.

Was anyone aware that OBS now offers "Enhanced Broadcasting" aka Multritrack Video? This offloads video transcoding to the person that is streaming their content and off of the servers themselves.

This is the single biggest cost of hosting a livestreaming server. If users are willing to use what's in their system we can make the bar to entry incredibly low.

"'’Backwards’ was my first thought,' said Cathy Holtslander, director of research and policy at the National Farmers Union (NFU), after learning about the email. 'Obviously, they made these cuts without knowing what they were doing — which is a big problem — and also [the cuts] suggest they don't really even understand how a research institution works.'

The research farms at Indian Head, Scott, and Nappan were established soon after Confederation and hold more than a century of records and data. Protecting such sites allows researchers to build 'irreplaceable' long-term datasets, which are particularly important to adapting to the climate crisis, Holtslander said."

#Signal seems to have been down for a bit today, so this is a good moment to consider if you have backup comms channels with people you care about.

A Signal Contingency Plan, if you will:

I agree with the recommendation there and am working on making Delta Chat @delta that kind of backup channel for me and mine.

In cmd.exe with NVDA, if a line is too long, NVDA can't properly review it. For instance, I just typed:

glab mr create -s=staging -b=master -t="a title that's kind of long, but really not that long (issue 1234)"

When I up arrowed and tried to edit, NVDA read spaces for some characters, and for the rest, it read characters from elsewhere in the line instead of the characters I was actually on. Is this a known problem? CC @NVAccess

We added our Vivaldi Social server to the Fediverse on November 15th 2022. We are still, I believe, the only browser company that is fully behind the Fediverse. It is something we are very proud of! The Fediverse is the natural alternative to Big Tech social media, just like, IMHO, Vivaldi is the natural alternative to Big Tech browsers.

Mozilla is adding a toggle to disable all generative "AI" features in Firefox. It shows that organized pushback is actually making a difference.

One battle won. Now let's make it crystal clear. We want tools, not forced LLMs. Keep the pressure on until "AI" is no longer an option.

He records them and shares it with the world.

What do people sound like when reporting their neighbors, coworkers, students? Are they confident they are doing a righteous good thing?

Witness the banality of evil in these sheepish suburban voices.

Turns out, HC smoke screens are so well known to be horrendously toxic that the US Army stopped using them, and noted in their training materials that it has killed soldiers during routine use. Also, Defense Technology changed their MSDS to remove references to many of the toxic decomposition products from their HC grenades.

🎉 NV Speech Player 2.6 is OUT! Pushing this release before I run off to meetings lol
Big stuff in this one:

🎯 Per-phoneme voice quality! Phonemes can now have their own creakiness, breathiness, jitter, shimmer, sharpness. This is HUGE for a formant synth.

🇩🇰 Danish stød finally works! That creaky/glottalized quality on stressed syllables - synthesized properly for the first time.

🏴‍☠️ Fixed the "pirate R" in US English - "door" and "four" now sound different from "short" and "sport". No more over-rhotacized FORCE vowels!

🛠️ New normalization conditions (notBeforeClass/notAfterClass), length mark stacking fix, word-final schwa reduction, class editor in the Phoneme editor's GUI...
NVDA users can now share voice profiles and save their slider settings to the end of Phonemes.YAML, after which they can send it over and that voice will show for someone else.
🐧 Linux x86_64 binaries included + Speech Dispatcher config, with renderer supporting new CLI options!

⚠️ NVDA users: We cleaned up the settings UI - removed checkbox clutter. Power settings now live in the keys dropdown.

It's been a wild ride getting here. Mass thanks to everyone testing and giving feedback!

I'm not a Christian, but the more I learn about Christianity (I've been reading the Gospels; I'm on Luke now), the more I think that so many of our societal ills come from losing the broad cultural values from Jesus's teachings: humility, forgiveness, grace, love. There's a lot of wisdom there that was honed over two thousand years of contact with reality, and many of us seem to have thrown it away in favor of meanness, selfishness, and spite.

I like to sing karaoke, and I have a tradition (this year will be my fifth doing this) where every Easter Sunday, I go to my favorite karaoke bar (which starts early, at 5 PM, on weekends), and sing all songs by Christian rock artists. I do some songs that had some success in the mainstream, like "Dare You to Move" by Switchfoot. And I do a few songs that are more spiritual, while still not being straight-up church worship songs, like "The Motions" by Matthew West: youtube.com/watch?v=9NxdHSCiQR…

My Smart scale, Qardio has finally stopped communicating with the world. So, naturally I pose a question. Whats a good go to #Accessible Smart Scale these days? The Withings app seems to be alll right, but they have had their fair share of accessibility issues in the past and I am hesitant to make a purchase based on just a demo of an app. So, whats everyone using these days? #Accessibility #A11y

Respect property rights and buy the land you want to protect. Well, one conservation group took that advice — and the Trump administration just punished them for it.

Changed VPN as well: deleted NordVPN, joined Mullvad. I love the philosophy of that service: you pay what you use without giving too many personal data; nord vpn took my underwear as well if I let it go. And accessibility wasn't good on PC. Now I'll see if Mullvad is accessible via desktop but on my phone it works good. Very good. #accessibility #alternatives #blind #software #vpn
