Speaking of jumping ship, I store all my files in #Microsoft #OneDrive and would like to get rid of that dependency as I'm working to replace my workflow with #FLOSS tools where practical. Do y'all have recommendations for a #CloudStorage service which has reasonably #accessible clients for #ScreenReader users (I primarily use #Fedora Workstation 43 but also use #Windows 11, #Android, and #iOS), can sync to my local filesystem, and/or can appear in the #GNOME desktop File Manager? I'm not interested in self-hosting something like #Nextcloud, #OwnCloud, etc. Any suggestions or firsthand experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Just wanted to install an #XMPP client to create an account to test something. I moved away to #Matrix years ago because I had no hope anymore for #XMPP, but now that I wanted to create an account, I am just shocked at how dead it is: #Fedora still has Gajim 1.7.3, when the last release is 2.4.1. #pkgsrc is a bit but noch much better with 2.1.1. #Tkabber is even worse: pkgsrc has 0.11.1, when 1.1.2 is the latest release that was released in 2015(!). It seems distributions keep XMPP clients around, but don’t update them because nobody is using them anymore. I had not expected for XMPP to be that dead. That’s shocking.

I also think if distributions cannot be bothered to update a package in over 10 years, they should just remove it…

I'm quite impressed how #EndeavourOS, despite not being _glamorous_ or hyped up as some of the rest in the list - is doing quite well at ~2.12% of the #Linux #Steam users. Not **that** far off from something like #Bazzite (~5.89%) and is higher even than #Fedora, #Manjaro, and #PopOS. EndeavourOS was the boat I chose when I decided to leave #Windows few years back, and it's still going strong. Despite #ArchLinux having a rep to 'break', my PC and all of my family members' have yet to go through such a thing lol. Its rep of being not user-friendly to noobs is also not that true seeing how a solution to a problem, if any, is often one search away from the incredibly documented Arch Wiki - better than relying on hundreds of conflicting information scattered through distros' forums. I'm perfectly aware everyone's experience is unique to their own, esp with something as fragmented as Linux, but I'd be remiss not to mention that while my EndeavourOS experience has been flawless, I've had broken/borked systems with 2 #Debian/#Ubuntu based distros (not gonna name, names), Manjaro (Arch based, though some might not agree), and even Bazzite (Fedora based). These were with #Intel/#AMD systems too that's supposedly 'ideal', at least 2 of my EndeavourOS systems meanwhile have #NVIDIA GPUs (i.e. 'not ideal'). These were a couple of years ago tho before reaching my 'final distro', EndeavourOS tho so things may have improved for these distros too. All in all, my point is, despite not being the glamorous, popular option... THANK YOU to the EndeavourOS team for clearly putting in a ton of work to ensure our (supposedly) broken-prone systems to keep running stably.

Fedora's elections are now open until Wednesday, 7th January!

I'm applying for a seat at FESCo [1] as I want to represent the interests of users, developers and maintainers of what we call Atomic, Bootable Container, Image Based or Immutable variants of Fedora (CoreOS, Atomic Desktops, IoT, bootc, etc.).

You can find my full interview at communityblog.fedoraproject.or…

Vojtux - Accessible Linux distro which is almost pure Fedora

Vojtěch Polášek has put together a technical preview of a version of Fedora that should work well for blind or visually impaired users. While his goal is explicitly to see these improvements and changes become part of Fedora itself, for now you can use this implementation based on the Fedora MATE spin. :)

Is it cool that Linus Torvalds uses Fedora Linux? Yes!

But the really cool thing is to use the Linux distro that works best for you. :)

Having Linux get covered on LTT is such a big win for the open source community as more techies realize there is another way!

I don't think I've yet expressed enough yet how great the out of box experience of #Fedora #Linux on a new #Lenovo #ThinkPad has been. Don't get me wrong, Fedora runs great on my other hardware, too, but this pairing feels much more intentionally supported and it really shows in the experience.

It's funny it came with pre-installed Windows even though I specifically ordered it without OS.
Windows are gone now. #Fedora #Silverblue rules the computer now.

So last night, I tried Fedora 43. Fedora-Workstation-Live-43-1.6.x86_64.iso. The installer is now web based, making it really nice to use, even with just Tab and Shift + Tab. I was able to install it with no problem.

Now, first time setup had just one big issue, the timezone selector. It's keyboard accessible, and works like this: you start typing a city name, like Chicago, and then down arrow through suggestions and press Enter on the one you want. But Orca doesn't speak that there are suggestions available, and does not read which suggestion you select until you press Enter.

Other than that, Gnome desktop looks pretty good these days! The settings are much better, and that's about all I had time to test so far. Orca starts if you hit Alt Windows S at the installer and first setup, then starts after first setup is complete. The overview panel where you type to search doesn't read when it opens, but basically you just hit the Windows key and start typing what you want, and Orca reads what you hand on, and you can arrow through results. Notifications read too, and I'm thankful Gnome supports notifications.

Hey #Fedora community. A friend of a friend is looking for a Fedora10 pin and/or a sticker or some other merch with the Fedora10 branding on it. Can you help me with that? I know 2008 was ages ago:)

So I'm using LibreOffice 25.8.2.2 on Fedora Workstation 43 GNOME 49.
For some privacy reasons I'll not be able to attach the entire PDF. However, I can show the page 15 that I was trying to open using LibreOffice Draw in image form.

It contains a combination of Bengali & English language and numerals.

EDIT : This previous issue of mine is still not fixed yet -> mastodon.social/@javalps/11534…

When can I expect the new version?

Hey 👋. Unfortunately even after latest update "version 25.8.2.2", this is issue is still not fixed yet 😔.

Could you please do something ?

OMG! The appearance of the #Fedora installer has finally been updated?! It's so clean and intuitive. This makes me super happy. Thank you @fedora 💙

There's currently an issue that prevents Fedora Atomic OSTree distros from upgrading.

A comment in the forum links to an issue, where the *preview* title for the link was changed to "Making sure you're not a bot!" from the issue tracker… and the issue itself is also due to Anubis running on the server for the updates sending the interstitial "Making sure you're not a bot!" page instead of actual data.

Taking the liberty to cross-post my involvement with Fedora Flatpaks; originally posted on Fedora Discourse.

4 years ago, I discovered Fedora Flatpaks, and developed a strong interest with the tech and approach behind it. After having a thorough understanding of it, I wrote two detailed articles about Fedora Flatpaks:

Mind you, I also designed the banners (just highlighting how much I cared about promoting it back then).

I also asked to open a Matrix room (2022/01/01), which was rejected:

discussion.fedoraproject.org/t…

As time went by, I started losing interest, because there wasn’t much progress with the project, and it was duplicating effort that could have otherwise heavily benefited Flathub and every party involved (GNOME, KDE, elementary, freedesktop.org, Endless Foundation, etc.), which would have benefited Fedora, too.

This realization led me to write “Where Fedora Linux Could Improve § Only Ship Unfiltered Flathub by Default”, which criticized the lack of progress with it, as well as addressing one of the “legal concerns” (2022/12/06):

tesk.page/2022/12/06/where-fed…

(Side note: I’ve also heard from Flathub folks that they received legal advice in regards to these issues.)

This led to some community members to react and start the Flatpak SIG project, to accelerate development — 2 days after my blog post (2022/12/08):

fedoraproject.org/w/index.php?…

Then, a Matrix room was (finally) created and publicly available (2022/12/10):

fedoraproject.org/w/index.php?…

By the way, I was never reached out or invited to join the SIG, despite putting in so much effort and time to accelerate development.

However, despite that, I still tried to participate in the project, and added myself to the SIG as well:

fedoraproject.org/w/index.php?…

Any of my suggestions then were either rejected with no proper explanation, shrugged off, or sent to /dev/null. And whenever I asked for source for obvious misinformation, it would be dismissed.

I tried to push Fedora Flatpaks in a direction that would have been less controversial and more productive by limiting its scope, which would also enable us to allocate more resources on other stuff. However, once again, I wasn’t really taken seriously; at least I personally don’t feel like so.

Eventually, I lost every last bit of interest and removed myself from the SIG (2023/02/20):

fedoraproject.org/w/index.php?…

All this to say, I tried really hard to keep my opinions to myself, and communicate diplomatically with them; I even wrote articles after doing several hours of researches in the span of weeks to show my interest, but I was treated extremely unfairly in return. So this naturally led me to one conclusion which I still hold today: they’re not looking for diplomacy; they just want to do whatever they want, even if it ends up upsetting/hurting people and projects’ image — I have the same sentiment with RPM packagers, too.

#Fedora #Flatpak #Flathub #Flatpaks

If you are not yet convinced that Fedora Flatpaks is a hostile 'alternative' to Flathub, here's a good one for you:

An indeterminate amount of their packages are, in fact, directly based on existing manifests from Flathub. Not by manually inspecting code themselves; rather, by running a script which goes through Flathub's APIs and parses the respective apps' manifest to generate manifests for Fedora Flatpaks: pagure.io/flatpak-module-tools…

All this, without crediting the original authors.

You have a couple of options that are accessible. #slint linux, #fedora. If you go the Fedora route install 41 then upgrade to 42 after it is installed. Use the #mate version.
If you try #slint things should work out of the bo, but it is #slackware based so the package install process will be different than most systems if you need to install something that isn't there yet.

@fedora How does the #fedora project feel about being in a tent that also includes nazis? How about @ubuntu, does this represent your values?

Does this match the values of public investor #linustechtips ?

Fedora 43 is expected to be released within weeks. I decided that the late stage of the beta process was a suitable moment to upgrade my server. Several days of debugging and configuration changes ensued, but not due to its being a beta version. The most complex problem was to adjust to the new (backward-incompatible) syntax of the Dovecot 2.4 IMAP configuration. Thanks to participants on the Dovecot mailing list for recognizing one of my errors, I was able to fix the configuration and return my email service to normal. #Fedora #Linux #DovecotIMAP

Fedora & CentOS at LinuxDays 2025

Another edition of LinuxDays took place in Prague last weekend – the country’s largest Linux event drawing more than 1200 attendees and as every yearm we had a Fedora booth there – this time we also representing CentOS.

I was really glad that Tomáš Hrčka helped me staff the booth. I’m focused on the desktop part of Fedora and don’t follow the rest of the project in such detail. As a member […]
