Since this is CaneAndAble.social, we proudly point out that every October 15 is International White Cane Day. Events will be held across the world celebrating the white cane as the symbol of independence for blind people, and raising awareness of obstacles in our path, figuratively and literally.
As the day dawns in the southern hemisphere, this instance that serves the blind community wishes blind people everywhere acceptance, opportunity and independence. With our white canes, we are relentlessly moving forward.
To our sighted allies, the blind community is as diverse as any other. We have hopes, dreams, careers and shortcomings, just like you. We belong. Celebrate the role blind people play in all walks of life so we can all contribute.

Okay guys, #Voiceover user here. Every time I open a message notification on my #AppleWatch and go to reply, dictation comes up automatically as soon as I double tap on the text box. This is fine initially because I can just dictate my message, but how do I get out of dictation mode when I'm finished composing my message?? Turning dictation off in settings makes it so where I'm not able to manually enable it in message text fields. Magic tap doesn't get me out... Help?
in reply to 🌟Kira Aeva🌟

I just magic tap a few times maybe once or twice if I see my volume hasn't returned to normal. But also, dictation on my watch sucks. Bleh.

One of the benefits of keeping a gratitude journal is that every so often, I find myself using an app I’ve used for years and thinking, “dude! I am so glad I have this app, and I am grateful for the indie developer who cares about #accessibility”.
This morning I am feeling that way about the Broadcasts app. In case you’ve not discovered it, here’s the description from the App Store.

The award-winning Broadcasts 3 introduces a brand new iPhone app, a beautiful new Now Playing screen, and a revamped Search experience. Now available on Apple Vision Pro. Listen to streaming internet radio in an ultra-simple, single-purpose app. Broadcasts makes building a library of stations from around the world easier than ever — no subscription required. Use completely free with a limited-size library of stations, or upgrade to the full version to unlock the library limit and add as many of your own stations as you like from the Station Browser, or manually via URL. Search for stations from around the world as easily as from your own library. Showcase gorgeous station and track artwork (for supported stations) with the all-new Now Playing screen. Use Shazam (Beta) to power the Now Playing screen with artwork and metadata for stations that do not provide it, or simply to provide an ambient Now Playing experience for music playing nearby. Show the currently playing artwork and metadata on external displays if you want an all-screen experience. Sync your library across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV with iCloud & Universal Purchase. Browse stations in grid or list view. Listen in Light or Dark mode. Edit stations to provide your own artwork, or use the Artwork Chooser to generate something fun and colorful. Thoughtful mouse, trackpad & keyboard support provides a great experience on iPad. Perform common tasks from the Command menu, and control playback using keyboard shortcuts. Use Handoff to transfer playback between devices, or AirPlay directly to a home speaker. Listen with just your Apple Watch (Cellular) while out and about, or on Apple TV at home. Supports CarPlay on certified devices; stream internet radio on your CarPlay-enabled head unit directly. Automate playback using Shortcuts.

OK, it’s Jonathan talkin’ again now. This app is a fully accessible experience with VoiceOver. I particularly like the collections feature, because you can organise your radio stations however you like. If you want to create a system where you have your favourite stations organised by genre, knock yourself out. Or maybe you prefer to have stations you listened to regularly organised by country.
The app is updated frequently, and I do find stations in there that don’t seem to show up on some other apps.
It’s definitely worth a look if you’re after an excellent, accessible, well-supported radio app, and there’s an account for the app right here on mastodon, @broadcastsapp

Here’s the App Store link.

Why isn’t software funded by taxpayers released as Free Software? 🤔💻

Is there a NASA feed without all the commentary?
I'd like to read the telemetrics and just hear the comms. Poetry and logo design is lovely but ...
in reply to James Scholes

@jscholes sorry. the NASA livestream of the Europa Clipper Launch is just full of the usual facile pre-launch nonsense.
in reply to Sean Randall

@jscholes There used to be. It was called the Media Feed. Not sure if that still exists.
Oh, can anyone confirm that Muske is on board that thing?
in reply to James Scholes

@jscholes they're sending a spacecraft to Europa. It'll be there in April 2030, according to projections, so hardly a quick turnaround.

I Didn’t think gpt4 ATC would be Good at all, i thought it would just go off topic or hillusinate. IT does neither. I streamed a test flight earlier, but might do another later if there is interest.

Awesome airplane too. Sad I never got to fly on it...

Whoops.
In trying to show a developer that the standard Win32 message box function can default to something other than the primary button, I sent a screenshot from some homebrew software which measures the amount of noise around my laptop in "wives-on-the-phone".
That's probably quite an offensive metric if you are a wife. Or a woman. Or use a phone. Or just speak at all, maybe.
in reply to Sean Randall

I was going to send someone a screenshot from WhatsApp today but then realised I have some groups with names I didn't want to have to explain to colleagues and they were in the recent chat history which is on the left of the WhatsApp window. I did a chat export instead.
in reply to Andrew Hodgson

@andrew hehe one of my techniques these days is to use the navigator object. the Openai NVDA addon can grab it as an image. Obviously you can use that file for your own purposes rather than sending it to AI.

apparently the MBasic version of Facebook will be depricated at the end of October. This is by far the most accessible interface in my opinion.

Some of your criticism can be managed by subscribing to iCloud+ and using Private Relay.

For 1€ per month it's cheaper than most VPNs and also includes 50 GB of client side encrypted cloud storage.

It's decent privacy for value and usability.

Hi! Hi there! We've only gone and done another #GoToSocial release candidate innit mate!

github.com/superseriousbusines…

We fixed some small bugs, did a bunch of work around release note generation (not interesting for end users but tobi had fun), and documented GTS_WAZERO_COMPILATION_CACHE and nowasm.

Please read the migration notes carefully!

This is probably the final candidate before the real 0.17.0 release when we officially enter beta, we're all very excited here in the GtS treehouse! :gtspat:

I still want to go to Mars, but not if Elon Musk punches the ticket:

"It's not just Musk. The same goes for all the self-declared rationalists and tech-bro billionaires who think they're head and shoulders above the common herd. Far too many of them prove to be con artists, like Sam Bankman-Fried, or swollen with lethal hubris, like Stockton Rush, or wannabe mad scientists who believe that rules are for little people, like Marc Andreessen.

None of them are trustworthy. None of them have wisdom to match their wealth or their lofty rhetoric. If we're going to go to Mars—and, for the record, I do hope we eventually go to Mars—it shouldn't be the private vanity project of a billionaire. It should be a shared commitment on behalf of all humanity, with only our best representatives selected for the mission."

I unfortunately lost the link, but I read an article a few weeks ago which argued that we don't have any chance of colonizing Mars because there are regions of Earth, like Antarctica, that we haven't settled, and those are far more hospitable to life than Mars.

Is LibreOffice ever going to behave and stop freezing whenever you do nvda+down arrow? Seriously. I installed it again on my new windows installation and quite rapidly remembered why it was I wanted ms word instead...

I can't even read a document without having to manually do it. Pathetic that it is still like this in 2024.

in reply to Casey Reeves

All of those "De-googlin" and "de-microsofting" solutions preach about evil corporations that will eat our bodies and suck our souls, how good and cool they are, but actually they don't give a flying F about accessibility. Maybe "all" is too strong, but lots and lots of them.
in reply to André Polykanine

I mean, I am not a fan of ms, I am even less of a fan of google, and I am glad we don't use the latter at work. Because MS is enough to deal with. the amount of crap it likes installing, is a different thing. Even on a Mac. But at least it works. Not as good as Mac stuff works, but. Meh to all that. Open office is good, I played around with this kid's computer, but honestly, even if you find an ms version, which I have somewhere and could give you, it'll always show the close activation thing and you'd have to close it all the time. Not to mention sometimes it does not want to close and then, well, it dies.
in reply to Мира🇧🇬🇭🇺

@tardis OpenOffice and all of this stuff may be considered good until you are up to some serious things, like track changes, comments, complicated formatting, formulae and so on, and so on. I'm talking even from a sighted perspective. Oh, and getting compatible with MS Word with those things is yet another level of madness. I mean, as for accessibility, if you ask MS or Google, they at least are obliged to fix. Maybe not so fast, but eventually. With open-source solutions of that size in most cases you'll get "you need it, you fix it" answer. there are some notable exceptions like @forgejo who are really great people and there are folks that do care about accessibility. But in general… OpenOffice/LibreOffice is bad accessibility-wise, MatterMost (a Slack competitor) is awful, Matrix also (at least I couldn't make it work), and so on, and so forth. You want accessibility, you pay, unfortunately.
in reply to André Polykanine

Meh, yeah, I pay for Mcc lol. I did three years or so ago hahaha. But mine was from a multilinguistic standpoint, and thankfully, I don't work with excel. There are absolutely things even in MS that we can't access, or Google. Also, google sucks but that's just because I never made it work. Slack works okay. Teams is a different topic, it opens as many windows as it can. But these guys suck about privacy, and try to make me use the stupid AI, which I don't want to.
in reply to Мира🇧🇬🇭🇺

@tardis @menelion I also realized the ecosystem has changed too much in ms world and you can't even install anything but office 365 anymore. And I don't want office 365. So meh. I think I'm just going to convert this document to txt and too bad for the formatting. Or maybe not even bother anymore. Sigh.

I just wanted to have something that worked. Oh well. I even tried to install office via winget, called microsoft.office, and every time the installer is just spewing, couldn't install. It's not even trying. Hmph.

in reply to Casey Reeves

Bleh, yeah, MS office is no longer good for the average home user, not even for work unless it's a company hat uses 365.
in reply to Мира🇧🇬🇭🇺

@tardis @menelion Hmph. Oh well. Too bad for me, I guess. I'm not going to pay a subscription for a product if I use it so little... Besides, I have no money, so I can't pay anyway.

I've looked and looked in the LO bugtracker and just can't wrap my head around this interface and have no clue what to even look for.

in reply to Casey Reeves

@tardis I guess, if you need basic stuff, reinstall WordPad if it's already removed on your system. I won't promise anything, but hopefully I have some better news in coming months for you.
in reply to André Polykanine

@menelion @tardis Huh huh. I think this only got removed in windows 11, or are they planning to also take it out in 10? Probably only the former since 10 is EOL pretty darn soon. yay for me I'm still on 10.
in reply to Casey Reeves

@menelion @tardis Fwiw I tried OpenOffice for the laughs. I couldn't even figure out what it was asking me to import in the file formats thing so I selected what I thought would fit, and it opened a totally unusable interface just saying something like, OpenOffice chart with nvda always saying unknown unknown. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with this, but it is even worse than LO for sure.
in reply to Casey Reeves

@tardis that's what I'm talking about. And if you report this, you most likely will get one of those:
A) "You need it, you fix it, here are contributing guidelines";
B) "We can't reproduce it, send a screencast". Variant: "What is a screen reader? How do you use a computer if you're blind?";
C) "Accessibility is a very important subject, but we have a roadmap with features X, Y,Z, Alpha, Beta and Gamma, and then we'll probably will consider thinking maybe about some kind of accessibility, sort of. Probably maybe".
I am not talking specifically about OpenOffice, I don't know their particular attitude, but unfortunately, being myself an open-source maintainer and advocate, I read and heard those things too many times.
