@warzazel I use sandboxed google play exclusively for bank and Garmin connect, all other app are on my personal profile, I do not like Viber, but it is necessary because of my work. all other app are FOSS, and the social network is #mastodon and #matrix #grapheneos

My vps 1cpu stopped running reliably, thanks to #matrix using huge amounts of disk

Setting up #xmpp with a reverse proxy is undocumented.

#Deltachat server hosting script doesn’t work with the latest python

I’m really struggling for #selfhosted chat options.

Hey, did you know that you can join Matrix chatrooms using Movim and #matridge (a Slidge XMPP - Matrix bridge) ? 😮

You can then access your Matrix rooms (and soon Matrix servers 😚) and integrate them seamlessly in your Movim interface ✨

…and it seems that Movim is much faster than Element at accessing and displaying the content of Matrix chat rooms 🚀 Fun 😸

Checkout the Slidge project slidge.im/ !

Tech people talk about tech too much.

I really really REALLY want to use all the awesome privacy friendly FOSS (and similar) stuff, but I am not a techie person! I don't know how to program, nor do I want to.

And every SINGLE time I try to find out even what thing (OS, program, app, service, etc) to use, let alone how, and I search for it... I get techie-focused answers.

It's complete gibberish to me! Absolutely useless. It makes me feel actively unwelcome even though I really care about using alternatives to Windows, Meta, X and other dystopic nonsense.

For example: I'm like "How do I start a non-enshittified group chat to talk about a thing?" and all the results are technobabble to me. I don't even know if the words they use are supposed to be normal english words or if they refer to orgs or groups or apps or some weird coding wizardry.

I am so lost, every single time.

I stick with it though. But like. I wonder if the tech people realise that this is happening???? Because they probably understand what they're talking about. And they seem to not realise that not everyone does.

I'm not trying to blame or shame anyone or even complaining as such (a little bit complaining, ngl), mostly just giving feedback. This is not an issue with a singe thing but with ALL of it as a whole! Including #GNU #Linux the #Fediverse #Matrix and most #FOSS apps.

My sincere wish: Give non-techie people an EASY TO FIND and easy to read and easy to understand and easy to implement guide about how to use the things as an alternative to using big corporation services, ie, "I just want it to work" and not have to worry about the technical side of things. (examples in thread)

Countering toxicity and fake takes is not just a technical question (moderation, admins etc) but one of social curation both collectively and privately: which people and groups do you/we trust for what. No tool can automate that.

#deltachat is for private e2ee messaging and mutually curated group chats, and not random social media propelled onboarding. We are with #Signal here and not with #simplex and #matrix who offer public anonymous discovery of large chat groups with lots of unknown folks.

TIL that the president of Signal believes that people who run Mastodon and/or Matrix servers do so "in most cases" on hyperscaler* infrastructure.

This is my Mastodon server. And its UPS. And its networked KVM for when things get really hairy.

It's also my Matrix server. And Nextcloud. And Git. And Home-Assistant. And Jellyfin. And SearXNG. And Peertube.

When people objected to her claims, she doubled down and proclaimed condescendingly that we "don't have a clear understanding of this space".

TIL that I don't feel confident in recommending people to use Signal. Something's very off here.

*) "hyperscaler" basically means the big cloud infra providers with provisioning APIs that allow you to scale your resources up/down automatically with usage

Draupnir call for participation: reviewing the last development cycle and affirming the project direction

If you value the work that we do on the Draupnir project and think that it is important then we need to hear from you.

We are trying something new where we provide a short update and reflection about the project and an interactive vote where you can affirm contributors about the project direction.

icymi, in the Matrix State of the Union they said they didn't plan on pursuing decentralized social media, but they do hope to make it easier for those ecosystems to use Matrix so they don't have to reinvent what Matrix has already done

quick heads up. Our impressions: #matrix is going strong with public sector entities, and it's where most dynamics happened at the conf.

We are rather focused on private and resilient messaging where servers don't play a big role; as we want #chatmail relays to be dirt cheap to operate, no pro version needed. Our focus is on informal usage, groups, family, friends, affinity or interest groups, whereas matrix is increasingly focusing on corporate/ organizational use cases. YMMV

☁️The recent AWS outage showed how fragile “cloud-based security” can be.

When one datacenter faltered, global communication tools — including Signal — went dark 🌑

🕸️Matrix-based messaging systems kept running because they don’t rely on a single provider.

Resilience = decentralization

Let's invest in open, federated platforms.

Hey, did you know that Movim allows you to link your #Discord, #Telegram, #WhatsApp and #Matrix accounts to your main XMPP one and chat with all your contacts in one integrated platform? 🤩

We are working hard with @nicoco to ensure a perfect integration with the Slidge gateways project slidge.im/ 🥸🤝🥸

Message synchronization, reactions, stickers, GIFs, chatrooms, invitations, file transfer... you can now find all those exciting features fully working across all your linked accounts in Movim ✨.

Now you can move to #XMPP while staying in contact with all your friends. 👌

Try it out on mov.im/ or by deploying your own instance 😸!

Important message from my talk!

Exclude Insecure Devices is coming!

After April 2026 (or maybe even sooner), if your Matrix device is unverified, you will not be able to talk to someone who is using Element!

Or any other client complying with MSC4153

#Matrix

@TheDailyBurble, happy to help.

Another cool feature of #XMPP are "gateways" that make it relatively easy to connect with other IMs.
e.g.
#Libervia to #ActivityPub and #email (CC @Goffi )

nlnet.nl/project/Libervia
libervia.org

#Slidge to all sorts of other IM like #Matrix, #Mattermost, #Steam, #Discord, #Whatsapp, FB … (CC @nicoco )

slidge.im

Not related to the outage, really, this morning I found myself searching for federated IM protocols, ideally end-to-end encrypted. I know we have @matrix but was looking for something more DM-oriented like Signal, but federated.

Looked into XMPP, but E2E encryption relies on add-ons. It seems the closest we have to that is actually #Matrix.

Exhausted, happy and looking forwards for next year's conference.

Time to travel home. Thank you all for attending and making the #MatrixConf2025 possible. It was an honor to organize this conference for you !

#matrix #MatrixConf

We had an amazing after show gathering with the activists from @hackstub after a successful last evening of the #MatrixConf2025. It was an interesting exchange, we learned a lot about your work and it was super pleasant to network with other hackers sharing our vision and values we bear as the ecosystem.

Now time to catch some sleep before rocking the last conference day.

Good night & see you tomorrow !

attending the #matrix conference using #matrix is really a pleasure to use.

@fairkom is a silver sponsor of the matrix foundation and will present their experiences deploying SchulchatRLP for half a million pupils, teachers and parents on Sat Oct 18th 10:00. The greatest challenges were syncing users and groups from a central IDM and building a #kubernetes cluster on premises.
@matrix

First of all: Thank you for your work!
I use it on Android alongside with other #Matrix Clients.
So far I remember, the onboarding was good. Generelly it feels fast (after) sync.
The chatlist items, for me, could have a little bit more padding. The gui with the bubble style in the Chats I don't like much.
It's nice to have some settings for gui. The accent color could have more options.

Anyone using #Tammy as a #Matrix messenger client?

What do you think about it? Why do you use it? How much do you use it? On which device type is it installed? What features do you miss?
