Anyone running macOS 15 and want to test to see if this `aria-activedescendant` bug is really fixed?
bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?i…

It’s not that I don’t trust Apple folks, it’s just that I have learned never to take the “Fixed!” assertion at face value.

It took over a year since I wrote this warning, but I finally found a case in the wild!

Well, *I* didn’t, but someone on the A11y Slack had an issue and I was able to identify it by description alone.

I forget what the Drama™ was that caused me to stop using Bartender on #macOS, but I've been happily using Ice as a replacement github.com/jordanbaird/Ice

Today I just got Software Update message for the latest version, and it warms my heart because it adds #accessibility support

Whenever you see a good app adding or improving accessibility support, please share the news. We need to normalize adding accessibility to all apps.

I finally got around to linking @lloydi’s post “Context is king: long live the king!” from my own (which he references). Anyway, his post:
tpgi.com/context-is-king-long-…

He also covers a couple variations where you can stack techniques for… an effect.

And he has a mini-tool (buried in a disclosure widget at the end) in there to generate the HTML/CSS for each scenario if you provide it the words.

Very detail. Much comprehensive.

I really enjoyed @yatil new article on WCAG levels. When the WCAG Guidelines were being created members tried to correlate the different levels (A, AA, AAA) based on how difficult they'd be to implement. It would be helpful if the standards within each level designation were checked again. The standards could be regrouped based on their current level of difficulty. Please check out the full article for more information. #accessibility yatil.net/blog/wcags-a-and-aa-…

Updated my sortable tables post.

It now notes that NVDA, JAWS, Narrator, and VoiceOver / iPadOS will announce when you sort a table column.

That means VoiceOver on macOS and TalkBack do _not_ announce a sort.

Dramatically better than when I wrote it in 2021 yet still utterly inadequate.

Here's a video I want to age like curdled milk. Age so quickly it's out-of-date a week after it's made. The issues I've outlined here should be fairly simple fixes if they follow Apple's accessibility guidelines, so here's hoping someone at Floatplane Media can get some eyes on this.
I've tried to be as fair as possible, not just to make a 'bitch and ditch' style video, and to showcase the issues I have.
Please boost if you have an interest, or know that it can potentially reach someone who can make a difference.
Not my cup of tea to ask for those under normal circumstances, so I will not be making a habit of it.
Thanks.

Hello #accessibility experts and #screenReader users. I am trying to find out a wordpress addon that might provide self-hostable and screen reader accessible reservation system. The features I am looking for is ability to integrate this with google calendar or any other caldav based self-hostable calendaring solution. Email notifications for both visitors and administrators is a plus. I need this to be accessible to both visitors as well as administrators.
Also recently I think I have seen a mention of croutfunding campaign where the aim is to build open-source accessible booking system. I'd be happy to look at it too if you can remind me of it.

More ISO standards on PDF accessibility are now available for free!

Today the @PDFassociation announced they are making three additional ISO standards - ISO 14289-1 (PDF/UA-1), ISO 14289-2 (PDF/UA-2) and ISO TS 32005 - available for download at no cost.

Big kudos to the PDF Association and to the following companies for making this possible: Allyant, Axes4, CDP Communications, and TargetStream Technologies.

Oh hey, forgot about this open issue lol. ChromeVox on ChromeOS is so dead. I made an issue for a feature to jump to the next/previous spelling error detected in a text edit area, and well, it's as dead as the ChromeVox What's new document. Oh wait they've not been sending out what's new emails to the ChromeVox email list since like version 94 or so.

More seriously though, a ton of schools, and jobs, are switching to ChromeBooks. I'm not saying one cannot be productive on a ChromeBook, because I was able to. But *only* with the help of Chrostini (Linux support) and Android apps. So like, you seriously have to use every single feature to get work done that's more than just Email and Google Docs.

Top `<table>` tips:

• Don’t span cells:
adrianroselli.com/2023/02/avoi…

• Don’t redefine column headers: adrianroselli.com/2022/02/colu…

• With one exception, you don’t need a `scope` attribute (the exception is sometimes the top corner):
tpgi.com/short-note-on-scoping…

• `column` is not a valid `scope` value:
html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage…

• Be wary of articles that don’t cite sources or testing when they make assertions about `<table>`.

Question for you high-contrast theme users.

I recently started an initiative in @gnome Design to standardize drag & drop overlays in entire windows and predominant views. I would really appreciate it if you could criticize / give feedback on the high-contrast variants of the overlay:

Edit: moved to gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/Design/…

(Boost appreciated)

A reminder that assistive technology (AT) covers more than screen readers. Using “AT” to mean solely SRs is a regular source of confusion between and among clients, vendors, and practitioners, so yeah I have things to say about it:

A Brief tour of the End, an accessible fiction podcast directory.

This is a brief tour of The End database, for fiction podcasts, with Apple's screen reader on iOS. I walk through some pages of the website that show how clean markup can make a website very easy to navigate for everyone, not just screen reader users.

The Marrakesh Treaty has led to countries opening up their copyright laws and allowing the reproduction of accessible books. However, there are still many limitations. For example, 18.7% of the participating countries have a commercial availability check, and 38% have a secondary law that might require a check.Hopefully, the European Accessibility Act fully taking effect in June, 2025 will lead to a proliferation of accessible books provided by publishers. #accessibility repository.ifla.org/handle/123…

The first public working draft of the EBraille spec is available! It is primarily meant for organizations that develop software that will read or write eBraille files. eBraille uses an EPUB 3-compatible file set based on the Open Web Platform — using technologies such as XHTML and CSS — to encode braille in semantically enhanced markup and allow it to adapt to the different capabilities of braille reading devices. The file set is designed for both packaged distribution to end users and deployment to the web for online and downloadable reading.

I come from a business / digital background, so digital accessibility has always been big on my radar. When I started in science a few years back, I was very surprised to see that arXiv - a service that allows scientists to put their pre-prints (papers before peer review) was not accessible.

This meant that all science papers that were open access (away from journal subscriptions) were only available as PDFs - which means people with digital accessibility needs could not access them.

Access to science should be open to everyone (the pandemic showed us how important this is), and whilst there is a need for papers to undergo the formal peer-review process, that does not mean we can't adhere to global digital accessibility standards.

So, I am extremely glad to see that arXiv is now moving toward digital accessibility, with its second accessibility forum in Sept. 2024. They've also been moving to make papers in HTML format (instead of PDFs only) which adheres to these standards.

If you are interested in accessibility and science, you might consider attending this forum. It's free to all and only requires remote participation.

Chrome appears to be first to have hit all the 2024 Interop #accessibility test goals:

While I want more (more done, more aggressive goals, etc), this is good. Kudos to the team for getting there.
