This right here is exactly WHY people get so mad when #linux #accessibility comes up. This is why even when people receiving the torch who want to do better get unjustly yelled at. We're dealing with systemic neglect for quite literally decades, and pretty much a big fat f*ck you every single time some new thing happens in this space. Are Windows and Mac worth switching from? Absolutely. In a heartbeat. Is it worth switching to ... this? ... How masochistic are you feeling? Not just today, but for the rest of your digital life?

As part of our volunteer-driven accessibility initiative in GNOME Calendar, and for the first time in the 10+ years of Calendar's existence, we finally completed and merged the first step needed to have a working calendar app for people who rely on keyboard navigation. This merge request in particular makes the event widgets focusable with navigation keys (arrow left/up/right/down) and activatable with space/enter. This will be available in GNOME 49.
Most of GNOME Calendar's layout and widgets consist of custom widgets and complex calculations, both independently and according to other factors (window size, height and width of each cell, number of events, positioning, etc.), so these widgets need to be minimal to have as little overhead as possible. This means that these widgets also need to have the necessary accessibility features reimplemented or even rethought, including and starting with the event widgets.
We also hope to get other parts of GNOME Calendar accessible before GNOME 49, but I can't promise anything at the moment. We did start working with making the month view accessible: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-c…
This implements button functionality to make it able to focus and activate it. This also sets the appropriate accessibility role and labels/descriptions. Related:

I wrote a book on Linux Memory Management, published by @nostarch - it's a comprehensive 1300 page exploration of Linux 6.0's memory management code, depth-first, diving into the code and REALLY explaining how things work.

Regardless of PewDiePie’s personal #politics (which clearly, at the very least are problematic), it is fairly well known by anyone who has been following him for any number of years that the vast majority of his fan base are enthusiastic fascists.
Now #PewDiePie , who’s content centers around PC gaming and Windows, has decided to switch to #Linux and published a video encouraging his followers to do the same. This means a very large number of his #fascist fan base is going to be switching to Linux.
Now many Linux communities are going to be forced to more explicitly choose their politics. Like the parable of the Nazi bar, if the community remains politically neutral, it will become fascist in short order.
A few things to be wary of:
People asking you not to be “too political” or to “focus on the technology, not the politics” is a classic and highly effective fascist ruse to get moderators to lighten up on fascist elements posting in their community.
People complaining about free speech rights. The #Internet and the #Fediverse is already a domain where people can speak freely about their politics by running their own server and building their own community with few to no government constraints. You don’t need to compromise on whether fascists have the right to free speech in your community.
Arguments over your code of conduct (CC) and “safe spaces.” Keep them up-to-date. Research other people’s CCs, learn about the history of why these CCs came to be, learn about what the function of each clause of the code is included and phrased the way it is. These were usually designed to make explicit the fact that a community wants to be a safe space where underprivileged people can feel comfortable expressing themselves, and it is very easy to make people afraid to express themselves. Fascists understand these CCs and the concept of “safe spaces” were explicitly designed to exclude them, and often attack these ideas.

Hey non-disabled #Linux folk, sure would be fantastic if everyone pitched in on helping the blind and sighted allies making Linux more accessible to disabled users rather than warning us about the end of Windows 10, like we don't already know. Telling us something we already know doesn't help us switch to Linux because while you're lecturing us, Linux still has accessibility issues in the underlying infrastructures.
To start, Here’s a small, impactful thing you can do for now. There are bigger needs but making a fully accessible place one can research and compare distros would be a start. This website is linked to a lot. It’s inaccessible to screen magnifier users because the test is coded in such a way where elements appear behind other elements. All the links in the navigation area are empty and need labels. Making the quiz screen reader friendly by having regular web elements for questions such as radio buttons and other HTML elements without enabling an accessibility mode would be a fantastic start. distrochooser.de/

Make more repositories, wiki's, websites, like Linux Access ORG, of accessible mainstream distros and other flavors/spins. Make accessibility guides. Do what big tech does for accessibility but do it better than them.

Hi Robert, good question & one I don't know offhand (if anyone does, please share!) Looking on reactos.org/faq/#can-i-install… I found "Can I install ReactOS and run any software compatible with Windows on it? Probably yes. However we highly recommend to check first if your favourite app runs in ReactOS. ReactOS is still an on-going project and not all the apps and drivers runs perfect on it."

Certain models of Lenovo laptops now ship with Fedora and Ubuntu Linux. This is done to keep costs low and cater to developers or IT professionals who heavily rely on Linux. Another reason could be the increased unpopularity of Windows 11 in recent times due unwanted features like "AI" or "Recall", but that is just my own wild guess ;) LOL. Would you buy it?

@downey went from MSO to AOO to LiO right at the beginning and haven’t looked back. And with Collabora Office (though I’d prefer a straight-up iOS/iPadOS LiO) it’s nearly as seamless as iWork without the walled garden, which means I can use it on my recently #Linux-upgraded-from-Win10 old PC.
