We have been running an #FDroid-compatible repository since 2012! Since then, the free software ecosystem on Android has blossomed, meaning @fdroidorg can be properly strict about #FreeSoftware. A couple of our apps still have a couple #proprietary blobs that are requirements. F-Droid no longer includes any third party repos by default, that means our repo is no longer there by default. It is still easy and safe to add it! Read on for more info:

Join us in celebrating #softwareFreedom on this #ilovefs day 💜 There are many events happening today all across Europe. Take a look at ilovefs.org for more info and inspiration for this I ❤️ #FreeSoftware Day

There will be F-Droid for #iOS as soon as #Apple releases a #FreeSoftware version of it. F-Droid supports free software platforms. That said, F-Droid also provides all tools needed to run an #AppStore, so we welcome the use of our stack to run an app store on other platforms. There has even been externally funded contributions towards making fdroid-based app stores for iOS and a Flutter app that can be built for iOS:

* gitlab.com/fdroid/fdroidserver…

Please, please, please add a reminder to your calendar so that you do not forget to thank a #FreeSoftware #OpenSource contributor or organisation on 14 February (#ilovefs). 🙏

I'm still concerned but the Python Software Foundation's post about the #EU's Cyber Resilience Act (#CRA) makes me optimistic that it could work for #FreeSoftware. I do agree with the core idea that #commercial #software companies should be held more accountable than they currently are. The key is getting it just right so that anyone can write whatever free software they feel like writing, and share it on the internet, without having to get a lawyer first.

In my talks and discussions about the role of Open Source maintainers, I usually list a number of reasons why maintainers might quit or otherwise reduce their involvement.

"The Russian army destroyed my house" hasn't been on that list yet 😐 🇺🇦

In Spain we're having major changes in the rules for the evaluation of research activities (in the public sector, our research merits are evaluated every six years, a "sexenio". #ANECA, the evaluation agency, opened a public consultation about their draft for their new rules, which advance in the consideration of #OpenScience practices, including #FreeSoftware

Here are my contributions to that consultation (in Spanish) jgbarah.github.io/Notes/sexeni…

Any comment or suggestion will be appreciated

Mainstream social media and messaging apps (#Facebook, #WhatsApp, #Instagram etc) are a nightmare for our personal data and freedoms.

We have #FreeSoftware replacements for most of these services but maintaining these services has recurring cost and effort.

diasp.in is a community project supported by volunteers. We offer #diaspora, #matrix and #xmpp services.

If we don't find enough volunteers by October 31st, we will be forced to shut it down.

Please volunteer at diasp.in/volunteer

We're ready for #FOSSY! Stop by the #GNOME table to pick up some stickers or purchase a t-shirt - if you're quick you might grab our very last hoodie (size L)!

The combination of rapidly-improving technologies like GNOME, Flatpak, Wayland, and Portals also means our active privacy protections are also better than ever before.

I went on to write:

>If and when we are able to develop an open, peer reviewed, industry-respected method of responsible and privacy-first telemetry, we may consider doing so.

While that post was in the context of elementary OS, I believe every word I wrote.

I’ve spent a long, long time thinking about ethical software, the challenges we *necessarily* give ourselves compared to closed competitors, and crucially, how to overcome those challenges.

Four and a half years ago, I wrote:

>respecting your privacy is the ethical thing to do; users have a fundamental right to the utmost privacy, even from companies and products they trust.

That’s as true as ever.

Read my colleague @wjt’s post covering the privacy-first system we have built into @EndlessOS, how it fits together, and why it exists.

blogs.gnome.org/wjjt/2023/07/0…

I hope this can serve as the beginning of the ecosystem coming together to solve this unique challenge in a way that is objectively superior than any proprietary system—all with privacy as the fundamental principle.

With #FreeSoftware you can do something to combat #EWaste!

Production accounts for 75+% of a device's #carbon footprint over its operating life.

Software can determine how long a device remains in use.

Lightweight, up-to-date software, free from bloat and ads, keeps less-powerful #hardware running and out of the bin.

Software freedom means hardware freedom.

Donate to #KDE and other #FOSS projects to support #SustainableSoftware.
