As my long-running readers are probably aware, I schedule a _lot_ of posts in advance. I use @bufferapp for this, and I am largely satisfied with this, except for one thing:
They have a fixed character limit of 500 for posts, and thus I cannot make use of the full 10,000 characters of my instance.
This is bad, since most of my scheduled posts are German folk tales exceeding this character limit, and thus I am forced to use screenshots instead of plain texts - which is terrible from an #accessibility point of view (yes, there are readers that can identify the text, but I'd rather use plain text in the first place). So I am looking for alternatives. Here are my requirements:
- It must have a web interface I can use on my desktop PC - I grew up with proper screens and keyboards, and while I _can_ use a smart phone or tablet for complex stuff, I do not find the experience enjoyable. - It must have a calendar view instead of being a simple, scrollable list - I often schedule posts weeks in advance, and I want to be able to keep track of what is scheduled. - It must make full use of the character limits of each instance. - It must allow for scheduling threads - quite a few of the tales I am posting exceed the 10,000 character limit. - It must work with #Mastodon . While I am aware that other #Fediverse systems (such as #Friendica ) have scheduling options of their own, switching to an entirely different system is a drastic step that I only want to explore when all other options have been exhausted.
Trailing dots on host names in URLs is the gift that keeps on giving. Let me take you through a dwindling story of how the dot is handled differently in different places through the stack of an Internet client. The evil trailing dot.
why not resolve the host to a FQDN and then use the cleaned up name subsequently (with never a dot). Someone having example.com. vs example.com hostnames is like asking for trouble anyway. in contrary to www vs www.exaple.com when local domain is set as example.com
the dot carries a real meaning in respect to dns resolving but not in respect to TLS . My view is that a http header host: line should not carry literaly what you passed on the url but the host you end up connecting (hence the result of dns resolving). Then all the other cases fall flat
@XYenon of course you can as the Host: http header distinguishes it. But my point of view is that the http Host: header must be a fully qualified domain name and not a short name like www or anything ending with a dot. But i would have to reread the RFC to the letter. In any case i would at least call it an edge case
@XYenon this raises the question to if exaple.com and example.com. are considered the same hostname. How do browsers handle this? how about capitalization, encoding etc?
and from the non-tech side of things – writing a URL in a blog post at the end of a sentence – did whoever copy-and-pasted that URL include the trailing (grammatical) period?
From a DNS resolver point of view, only with trailing dot is guaranteed to work. Without a trailing dot, google.com might resolve to google.com.example.com.

There's a difference between using a commercially hosted LLM service that's not open, reproducible, and has low key shady training corpus vs something like allenai.org/olmo
Does that play a role in how you see AI contributions?
I want to remain ignorant of that and push back the responsibility to the author who submits the code to us. The onus is on them to make sure the code they contribute is legit, owned and licensed correctly for them to be allowed to contribute it as-is.
@djh I have no idea. People say AI will get better. Perhaps it will. And then I presume it might get better in all or any areas it is used. We'll just have to see what comes.
@djh How can it not happen? If someone submits code they don't own it will be reverted. If someone commits code that doesn't work correctly it will be rejected.
Public software projects have been doing this for almost 50 years; why would that change? More importantly, what could it change into?
@lyda What I'm talking about is developers using AI trained on copyrighted (or otherwise questionable) training data to help them develop or generate some code.
I understand this will most likely be hard to detect that's why my question was if we should have an opinion on this or at least set expectations accordingly in this document.

We have a CI job to spot unwanted utf8 letters in #curl PRs as we have noticed that GitHub will gladly show the for example (identical) Cyrillic version of a letter next to the Latin version in a diff and it is yes, entirely impossible for a human to spot the diff. I mean the diff is shown, but the significance of it is not.
Changing just a single letter like that in a URL hostname opens up for a world of grief.
I feel like there needs to be tools that make safer handling of Unicode easier. Anyone know of the full list of Unicode ranges? I know there are some sites that give partial ones. But I'd like the information needed to detect "this sentence contains Unicode characters consistent with language X" vs "this sentence contains Unicode characters for 45 different languages"
That's very interesting, as Forgejo displays a big warning on top if something like this is being detected, a button to escape them and is marking the line with a warning:

@codecat finally they are git first (I never understood the beauty of mercurial) and I presume it is just easier and cheaper to use GitHub than doing it themselves. This is the official source, not a mirror. As I understand it.
whatever people might think about the choice of location, this is a really good thing as it opens up the possibility of people to contribute in an easier fashion. Git is just better known, I think?
It will also bring AI slop, unfortunately, but I hope the good outweighs the bad.
