Decided to sign up for #Codeberg, the #GitHub alternative that the Fediverse at large is insisting is worth a try and, in some cases, claiming will improve project contributions by avoiding some of the GH antipatterns. I expected to find some #accessibility issues; this is the modern web, after all.

I did not expect a fully inaccessible visual CAPTCHA with no workarounds. I'm unable to solve it, so I cannot create an account.

In short: If you want people who are #blind or #lowVision to contribute to your projects (you do, right?), Codeberg is currently not an #accessible platform.

While on the topic of awards... #github stars 2025 award. Again.

This is very welcome news in the face of Trumpist depredations of US public data.

"In recent months the Harvard Law School [@harvard_law] Library Innovation Lab [@harvardlil] has created a data vault to download, sign as authentic, and make available copies of public government data that is most valuable to researchers, scholars, civil society and the public at large across every field. To begin, we have collected major portions of the datasets tracked by data.gov, federal #Github repositories, and #PubMed...."

For the past few months, we've been working on decreasing our dependence on #bigtech - most notably, our dependence on #Microsoft via #Github.

We've been experimenting with @forgejo (which is very enjoyable), setup the build proces on our own hardware.

Since yesterday, the main instance is also hosted by #hetzner. There are still a few dependencies, but the main hurdles have been taken!

#GitHub now allows to add issue types and parent-child relations, even for private repos! Everything is accessible, including color selection for issue types. Good job, #Microsoft! The next step would be to add statuses, like New, Assigned, Resolved, In Testing, Closed. and I would ditch all other bugtracking systems, honestly. I don't like GitHub wikis too much though, but I guess, GitHub pages can do the job.

#catima 2.34.4 is out!

This reverts Catima to targetSdk 34 (Android 14) for now, to fix the UI regressions introduced in Catima 2.34.3.

It also includes the fixes in 2.34.3 and a new little feature to sort your cards by the "valid from" date, useful for things like train tickets.

Coming soon to an app store near you!

Dear GitHub support,

I have just been notified of access to GitHub Copilot having been added to my account, and I cannot find a way to disable that.

I build my reputation on original software that I write, and I do not want risking accidental copyright infringement or worse by having github surreptitiously push "smart" features I do not need on my account.

I am writing to ask for a complete removal of Copilot features from my account. Failing that, I would like a written confirmation that Copilot is not touching anything related to my account, and possibly a procedure I can use at any time to verify and prove that to my customers.

Best regards,

Enrico Zini

Funny. That's exactly the number of times I will use it.

I have actually had #GitHub #Copilot enabled for me for free for several years and I can tell you the exact number of times I have used it: zero (0)

Nonprofit work is hard. It takes a lot of time, dedication and, more often than not, you see volunteers taking in multiple different tasks and responsibilities to keep everything running. Thankfully, we occasionally get external contributors that help us out!

For instance, I would post something serious so as to promote our nonprofit, but it seems like #GitHub decided to help us with the marketing for the day by sending a bunch of its users (multiple) emails about GitHub Copilot. 😅

#Catima 2.34.0 is out!

This release adds support for #Passbook (#pkpass) files, commonly used for event tickets and more!

It also contains some other minor fixes and better handling of image thumbnails (especially transparent ones).

On the end-user side, this release probably doesn't look that different, but it contains some major code refactoring. It is also the first release with #Kotlin code in it.

During November 2024, the #CPython project ran exactly 96,697 CI jobs on GitHub.

That's an average of 134 CI jobs/hour.

The average run-time per job was 5m 37s.

That means we spent 13.97 days of CPU time per day.

🆕 blog! “GitHub's Copilot lies about its own documentation. So why would I trust it with my code?”

In the early part of the 20th Century, there was a fad for "Radium". The magical, radioactive substance that glowed in the dark. The market had decided that Radium was The Next Big Thing and tried to shove it into every product. There …

Beware, there is an ongoing spambot attack in #GitHub issues in several projects were random people suggest "the fix" is to download a random file from mediafire.com. Like this:

A man sits alone, slumped at a desk, his knuckles pressed hard into his eye sockets. He is the last remaining employee. All the engineers have been made redundant.

"Copilot, please fix our production system", weeps the #Github manager, as desperate tears leak through his hands.

"Certainly, sir, I will apply the recommended hot patch immediately" replies the system, and yet another indicator flashes red on the status page.

@markuswerle @jakob @pluralistic This is how I interpret the situation: #GitHub offers open source programs free access to GitHub actions today exactly as it did in the past. This access is limited in CPU performance and parallelism. It always was. All free CI services do this.

The #curl project was bumped to a fancier account to give us more actions powers: more CPU and more parallelism.

That is them doing us a favor and them supporting us, not the other way around.

@jakob it fits the road #GitHub has taken since it was taken over by #Microsoft. The original promise was to be #OSS friendly. Now that they are the goto place for Open Source they change the rules step by step. This also affects paying users. The SaaS price list exploded a couple of months ago. You now even pay extra for git LFS. I guess, this is the enshittification process @pluralistic is talking about.

In just a couple of weeks, Carie Fisher and Jesse Dugas from the GitHub Accessibility team will be sharing the accessibility features of GitHub Copilot that you can use to enhance your own projects.

Catima 2.29.0 is out!

This release adds support for finding barcodes in PDF files[1] and dealing with multiple barcodes. It also properly colours the status bar during usage now.

As always, it's available on #GitHub, will soon be available on #IzzyOnDroid and will slowly roll out to other app stores.
