I'm looking for a new job, or contract work, for the first time in a while - boosts appreciated!

I'm a polyglot programmer, with a wide range of experience behind me, from developing firmware that runs on 8-bit AVR, to highly distributed systems across hundreds of nodes, I covered pretty much the whole landscape.

I had my fair share of Ops experience too, and worked in (technical) Customer Service aswell.

I speak many languages (#C, #Rust, #Lua, #Python, #JavaScript, some #Go among them), but I pride myself in being able to pick up a new language at a decent level between signing a contract and starting on the job.

I'm a #Linux guy through and through, and have very little experience (or desire) to work with anything else, save maybe for the BSDs. I worked with containers, databases (relational and otherwise); in the cloud and on premises. I can debug, I can mentor, I can teach, and build, and integrate (continuously, even!). I'm not afraid of git rebase, nor of a crowd to speak in front of.

I live in Hungary, and am seeking remote work. I cannot relocate.

If you are someone looking for something like that, or know someone who is, please get in touch. My CV - with contacts - is available here.

I completely forgot about thunderbird. I just used geary as it shipped with pop OS. Will check this out. Following #linux hashtags definitely helps hahaha

The default text to speech options on most (all?) linux distros are pretty outdated, so I'm working on a little tool to easily install and configure a more modern option (Piper) and fully integrate it with existing applications via speech-dispatcher

As a result of my fiddling around, I now have @popey narrating my every action through the Orca screen reader...

On Monday morning we (Mozilla) detected a very large crash spike affecting #Firefox users on Linux, specifically on an older version of a Debian-based distribution.

It turned out to be an interesting bug involving the #Linux kernel and #Google JavaScript code so let me tell you about it.

I think I've finally figured out why I love #openSUSE Tumbleweed so much. It's simply due to it being stable AND a rolling release. It feels just great to use.

Also, as someone who loves GUIs, YaST is just a dream come true. I've tried lots of other distros, but rarely have I come back to one time and time again. #Linux

A good curl reference guide:
Everything curl
everything.curl.dev/
"Everything curl is an extensive guide for all things curl. The project, the command-line tool, the library, how everything started and how it came to be the useful tool it is today. It explains how we work on developing it further, what it takes to use it, how you can contribute with code or bug reports and why millions of existing users use it.

Sorry, neither #Linux nor #Firefox are supported by this provider if you want to see your psychiatrist via telehealth. Luckily, my doctor was willing to use an alternative encrypted chat platform. #ADHD

Alright, here's a response article to @martijnbraam's "Developers are lazy, thus Flatpak". I'll be addressing some of their claims by explaining why some of the design decisions make sense the way they are.

Edit: should there be a response article to mine, I'll respond it here (unless it doesn't address any of my points).

been using #LibreOffice since the early days and has been a loyal companion for all these years.
Even in my corporate environment that forcibly uses Win* and Office, I can just snuggle a portable installation and confortably use my templates in #opendocumentformat for everyday tasks at work.
I really like it because, it's free, predictable and it's against any task that you can imagine.
With #linux is just a match made in heaven.
Thanks all for the hard work ❤️

#Linux version deserved a dedicated logo like #4ppl3 stuff, anyway it's great and I like it 💪 👍

For better accessibility testing of the software I build, I've started testing more with screen readers.

On Android, enabling and using TalkBack is relatively straightforward, but for testing on my desktop, Orca is completely unusable.

I have a brand new Debian VM with GNOME, and Orca enabled, but actually using it in firefox just barely works. TalkBack has a nice workflow with highlighted elements that you move between as you read the page, but Orca seems delegated to using caret browsing and reading whatever your cursor is on? Am I missing shortcuts (which are also a pain, because the modifier can only be caps-lock or insert, not really conveniently placed)

Am I missing something, or is this the state of #Accessibility on #Linux?
Also the tts quality is very poor, which would make this even worse for any prolonged testing, but maybe there are alternative engines?

Somebody PLEASE make something like github.com/vadimdemedes/ink-ui but for GTK.

I would be a LOT more inclined to create native #linux #gtk apps if I could create them using #react or something similar.

Creating interfaces using GTK's native APIs feels like programming in the 90s.

Greetings!

Well, after finding out that #WhaleBird
github.com/h3poteto/whalebird-…is a decent enough accessible MacOS client for use with #Misskey, you'll see me post on here from time to time now as well! Most of the time I'll still be posting on my Mastodon account, though watch this space! Three-Thousand characters is more than i ever would need myself, but I'll take it!

For users of #VoiceOver, the 'J' & 'k' keys currently do not speak under the curssor what the post is, thus nornal VO commands for now are necessary. Definitely a client for #Blind users to check out though!

NB. As noted among the GitHub page, WhaleBird is also available for #Windows and #Linux, though I'll leave those builds to you guys!

Big thanks to Sakamoto for stepping up to maintain the #Firewire subsystem for the #Linux kernel.
I still use an #RME #Fireface800 and it works super well with the #ALSA driver he wrote using #pipewire.

I hope even post 2029 someone will be up for maintaining it as the devices are solid and using them on Linux is a great countermeasure against their planned obsolescence.

Does anyone know any way to verify that the account at floss.social/@gnome is official?

I suggested to them they might verify their web link, but as far as I can tell the haven't? Also emailed GNOME via their official website to check if this is their account, but didn't receive a response.

Any ideas? Anyone know someone at GNOME who could verify?

I'm not suggesting it's fake by the way, it's just frustrating not to be able to verify! :)

We are very proud to be sponsoring #LAS2023 in #Brno this weekend!

Jason @killyourfm will be in attendance with a LOT of #Thunderbird stickers and T-shirts to give away to our #Linux family.

Look for him at the venue all weekend, and at tonight's welcome party -- he'll be wearing a black Thunderbird shirt with a white logo that looks like this:
