the most cryptic notification I've ever gotten from #Windows:
"Notification from File Explorer: Starting the process of getting a trace".
Hmm... Ideas anyone?
I instantly remembered George Carlin and his standup about airline companies and their way of speaking English.
P.S. UPD. It's some kind of a diagnostic I didn't ask of though.

Hey fediverse! At one point one of my followers posted a .reg file or script that added exclude this folder from Microsoft defender to the explorer context menu. But I’ve lost it. Can anyone help? #windows#win11 boost okay @FreakyFwoof

Hey y’all, hope you’re doing well. Quick question: I’m trying to use Tweezcake on my Windows computer. I can open it and hear sound effects, but NVDA doesn’t seem to detect the actual window at all. Has anyone run into this or have any suggestions?

Thanks so much.

It has always intrigued me how much hotter #Windows laptops run as compared with the MacBook Pros in whose presence i've been. Pity really.

Yes! Yes yes yes, Hallelujah! #Slack added the Copy Message option by my request to the context menu. Now you blindies don't need to turn off and on your virtual cursor, browse/focus mode or whatever, you just press Ctrl+C or go to the context menu and select Copy Message! 🕺🏻

I'm quite impressed how #EndeavourOS, despite not being _glamorous_ or hyped up as some of the rest in the list - is doing quite well at ~2.12% of the #Linux #Steam users. Not **that** far off from something like #Bazzite (~5.89%) and is higher even than #Fedora, #Manjaro, and #PopOS. EndeavourOS was the boat I chose when I decided to leave #Windows few years back, and it's still going strong. Despite #ArchLinux having a rep to 'break', my PC and all of my family members' have yet to go through such a thing lol. Its rep of being not user-friendly to noobs is also not that true seeing how a solution to a problem, if any, is often one search away from the incredibly documented Arch Wiki - better than relying on hundreds of conflicting information scattered through distros' forums. I'm perfectly aware everyone's experience is unique to their own, esp with something as fragmented as Linux, but I'd be remiss not to mention that while my EndeavourOS experience has been flawless, I've had broken/borked systems with 2 #Debian/#Ubuntu based distros (not gonna name, names), Manjaro (Arch based, though some might not agree), and even Bazzite (Fedora based). These were with #Intel/#AMD systems too that's supposedly 'ideal', at least 2 of my EndeavourOS systems meanwhile have #NVIDIA GPUs (i.e. 'not ideal'). These were a couple of years ago tho before reaching my 'final distro', EndeavourOS tho so things may have improved for these distros too. All in all, my point is, despite not being the glamorous, popular option... THANK YOU to the EndeavourOS team for clearly putting in a ton of work to ensure our (supposedly) broken-prone systems to keep running stably.

Windows

Репозиторий на GitHub: github.com/andreykadelite/Auto…

I normally use my computer with a regular qwerty keyboard. But since it's a seven-inch Toughpad, I wanted to try it with my Orbit Writer, due to the size. I bought it to use with my iPhone, which it does very well (better than with Android,). I read the manual and even saved the HID keyboard commands so that I could refer to them quickly. But I don't understand a few things.

1. It is missing the Windows key. Due to this, I can't get to the start menu as I usually do. I also can't get to the desktop in the regular way.
2. I created a desktop shortcut which I put on the start menu, but I can't type ctrl+escape at the same time, so that method of getting to the start menu is also blocked, meaning that I still can't get to the desktop.
3. I can't type NVDA+F11 or F12 for the system tray or the time and date, respectively. I was able to create new commands for both under Input Gestures. But I also tried NVDA+1 for key identification, with both caps lock and insert, and that didn't work either. Fortunately, I was able to create another gesture to get into the NVDA menu.
4. On a qwerty keyboard, I can type alt+f4 to switch between windows. If I hold the alt key, I can also continue pressing f4 to switch between more than two windows. But with the Orbit Writer, while the command works, it seems to only work for two windows i.e. I can't hold alt and continue pressing f4.

Am I missing something here or is this a half-implemented system? How can they say it works with Windows when basic commands can't even be performed? If there are ways around these problems, please let me know.

Anybody know some good blind/screen reader friendly utilities for better managing virtual desktops in Windows 11/10? I use 4 to separate out my workspaces. I'm blind, so this is the next best thing to having multiple monitors. Better yet, each desktop has its own separate alt+tab app switcher list. Unfortunately, it's a frustratingly manual process micromanaging which apps open on which desktop and moving apps that opened in the wrong desktop on startup. I would love something that can make sure apps/app windows open in the right desktops, or at the very least have some keyboard shortcuts so I don't have to dive into the task view and faff around with context menus to move apps around. As far as I can tell, Windows simply doesn't have any native keyboard shortcuts for this stuff after you hit win+tab

Telegram, the cloud-based freemium chat, has now implemented strict rate limiting for users of alternative clients, VPNs and virtual phone numbers.
Clients like Nekogram, Nagram, Cherrygram and Unigram may show transmission delays or errors.
If your client had recently become slower, disable the VPN and use a real number.

Windows 11 Tip. All of a sudden, my computer worked properly, but when I hit windows key + T, to go to the taskbar, I just landed on a start button and it said taskbar unavailable. This confused me, I had no idea what happened to the taskbar, and no idea how to get it back. Luckily Gemini helped me out, and my taskbar is back and everything is good again! So just in case this happens to anyone else, I thought I would share what I did to get it back. It seems that sometimes Windows Explorer clitches and this is one thing that can happen. To hopefully fix it, 1, hit control + shift + escape to bring up the task manager. 2, You should be on the processes tab and land in a list of all of the processes. Hit the end key to jump to the end of the list, then arrow up to Windows Explorer. 3, hit shift F10 for the context menu. 4, find Restart in the menu and hit enter. 5, This will totally restart Windows Explorer and all it controls, which one is the taskbar. That is it. The fresh restart of Windows Explorer should put everything back to normal again! Hope this helps. #Windows #Tip #Taskbar #Unavailable #Fix #TaskManager #WindowsExplorer

The bug where after being on for 24-36 hours, the second hard drive on my #framework 16 laptop just...disappears...is getting really, really old. I thought it was temperature, so I started logging that. But nope. It's not an issue with the flash, because the data always comes back just fine, and there are no read errors or anything. It just gets tired after a day and decides to go for a nap. This is the problem with a fully repairable laptop: I installed it, so whatever's wrong, it's now my problem. I can't just go bother Del or whomever. It's running #Windows 11 because screen readers on Linux are still terrible, so anyone suggesting "install Linux" as the answer gets blocked. But I really don't think it's a Windows thing; it's not in device manager, or anywhere. Only fully powering down the machine and turning it back on again helps. A restart isn't enough. So it has to be a hardware thing!

Okay, so I encountered my first ever annoying issue with Joplin today. Annoying to troubleshoot, and annoying to fix. If you're having a weird problem where #joplin on #windows crashes a minute after launch, you need to go to Joplin's github and download the latest release. This is a problem with the auto-updater. Downloading from the website won't actually work, because the download link on the website leads to an older version. You need: github.com/laurent22/joplin/releases/download/v3.5.6/Joplin-Setup-3.5.6.exe

#Zed editor on #Windows is, as expected, absolutely, one hundred percent inaccessible. I created an issue but, honestly, I'm quite pessimistic. Splendors and miseries of #OpenSource.

To #blind people with experience with #PowerPoint, I need help! My school wants me to create a #presentation with speaker notes and graphics, and I'm having extreme trouble even getting started. My info text box with my name, school, and date covers everything up, and I can't figure out moving it or how to get to speaker notes. I normally create assignments with #LaTeX, but I kept running into issues making a presentation that way. I'm on #Windows using #NVDA. Disability services made this sound doable and even easy, but so far that doesn't seem to be the case.

As free Windows 10 support ends today, consider upgrading to a Linux operating system! You will continue to be protected with security updates, but you will also gain total freedom for your device.

Doesn't have to be Fedora - look around for the Linux distro that works for you. :)

derstandard.at/story/310000029…

Happy International E- waste day.

...Also happy Microsoft end-of-life for Windows 10 day.

It's estimated that 400-600 million computers still run Windows 10, and many of those don't meet the higher specs required for Win 11, which in addition to more RAM and a faster CPU includes having UEFI bios.

For those with some level of tech literacy upgrading to Linux is an obvious workaround, but the sad truth is that enormous volumes of ewaste will be generated by this unnecessary act of corporate greed.

Despite the recent media reporting, #Windows installation with local accounts is working just fine. Create a regular Windows installation media and drop autounattend.xml to the root of the USB device and install it.

You can craft the autounattend.xml yourself or use a service like schneegans.de/windows/unattend… to generate it.

If the installation demands you to connect to the internet, you can bypass this part by pressing Shift+F10 and then entering oobe\bypassnro + <return>. After the installer restart, you'll have the "I don't have internet" option, and the installation will proceed.

EDIT: To clarify: While I did not test the latest insider build I believe this method will continue to work, even with it. I'll be sure to edit the post if this turns out to be incorrect.

She's using the correct PIN code, so that surely isn't it. We opt

Native Schannel TLS stack of #Windows was so unreliable it got axed from #curl:
* Never worked reliably under real‑world loads.
* Quirky, cumbersome API/architecture that broke integrations.
* Zero developer interest—nobody tested or maintained it.
* Pure maintenance drag with no real benefit.

So #Microsoft again shipped a built‑in that nobody uses, and projects ditch it entirely in favor of better third‑party alternatives.

***Attention! If you miss MSN/Windows Live Messenger, AIM, and/or ICQ, this is for you! If you use a screen reader and want a 100% accessible messenger client, this is also for you.*
This works with Windows XPthrough 11, and I'm logged into it as I write! It's called Escargot, and it revives Windows Live/MSN Messenger. This is the original software, but it has been patched so that it connects to the escargot.chat server and not the Microsoft one. It is 100% free and accessible with NVDA and I'm sure JAWS as well. They also have projects for AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) and ICQ, including for Android and IOS, and are working on a web client for MSN. (I don't know if AIM or ICQ are accessible with screen readers, as I have never tried them). Anyway, if you're over twenty-one (my personal request), have read my profile here, and wish to add me, I am dandylover1@escargot.chat. You can find everything here.

escargot.chat

Note: If you already have Windows Live/MSN Messenger on your system, you will still need to download their version and create an account. Your Microsoft, MSN, or Hotmail one won't work for signing in. Also, remember to click on RUN_AFTER_INSTALL.exe, in order to patch the program to the Escargot server.

A Windows sysadmin tool that more people should know about is the Magic Number Database at magnumdb.com

This database is great for pasting weird Windows hexadecimal errors into and finding out what they might mean.

Example from today, I got 0x80d02002 during a Windows update. Magnumdb tells me that this result corresponds to DO_E_DOWNLOAD_NO_PROGRESS, so now I know it's probably because an update server isn't responding.
