We had our own Godot GDC Meetup hosted by @GitHub, which was a great time to meet old and new friends in a relaxed environment.

@gdquest gave an insightful talk on the governance challenges faced by big #opensource projects like Godot:

Alex Castellani (@alecaddd) is leading the charge on Thunderbird’s modern redesign, and we're thrilled to have him on the team!

But before he discovered the awesomeness of #OpenSource, he had to learn a hard life lesson about pricey, proprietary software...

Find out that story and much more in our "Meet The Team" series, a series of conversations with the people behind the software you use every day.

#LAION (non-profit association from Hamburg, Germany) is working on an #OpenSource alternative to #ChatGPT. They are crowd-sourcing a conversation dataset to fine-tune an existing open source #LLM similar to how ChatGPT was created.

You can help creating the dataset on open-assistant.io!

The first dataset release is planned for 15. April 2023.

"By being on GitHub, we reduce friction from the contribution process and we maximize the ability for others to join in and help. We lower the bar. This is good for us."

There have been many criticism towards GitHub on the Fediverse (#GiveUpGitHub). Some even say it's the "Twitter of hosting code". While I understand the rationale, I disagree. Been using GitHub for over a decade now and have hundreds of repositories there. Without GitHub it would be amazingly difficult to manage. I use for-profit products by Microsoft, can you imagine some of them have their place in the world?

I can quit Twitter, Facebook, etc. and self-host almost anything, but not my and the firm's code. Why?

You disagree with what exactly? That there are no viable alternatives to a walled garden whose owners abuse those who use it? Who have no respect for their work and intellectual property rights?

Because there are plenty of alternatives that people use every day.

For my latest story, I got to correspond with a Ukranian developer with cerebral palsy who uses ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot to communicate and code. It was wild, because I don't think our interaction would have been possible just a few years ago.

Beyond that, though, #GenerativeAI is removing barriers for him to code and contribute. He even released his first #OpenSource project recently sharing his experience!

Alex Hollender's retrospective on a recent Wikipedia redesign

alexhollender.com/wikipedia-20…

reminded me of a post I wrote in 2019: Design, and Friction Preventing Design Improvement, in Open Tech

harihareswara.net/posts/2019/d…

On:

those exceptional #FLOSS projects that aren't developer tools, and are robust, & have high-quality user experience

problems & approaches in product management + #UX #design in #opensource, and people already working on it

Wikimedia & design pushback specifically

Welcome to the debut episode of the Thunderbird podcast, which we're affectionately calling the ThunderCast!

:fdroid: After several months of hard work, it's a good feeling to be able to say our @fdroidorg board of directors is officially chartered and running, and finally with an official legal entity through Dutch stichting (foundation) Commons Conservancy.

💚 Very humbled to be able to serve in this inaugural group of talented volunteers, and even more excited about helping #FDroid into the future.

🎉 We're growing! Our global #FDroid community is pleased to announce that we now have an official governance plan and a brand-new volunteer Board of Directors. We're excited to work with them to keep improving the leading all #FOSS mobile app catalogue!

Update. Turns out that John #Deere has been using open code under the #GPL w/o living up to the license. The Software Freedom Conservancy (@conservancy) is calling on it to comply — which would greatly enhance #farmers' #RightToRepair.

"We…publicly call on John Deere to immediately resolve all of its outstanding GPL violations…by providing complete source code…that the GPL & other copyleft licenses require, to the farmers & others who are entitled to it."

If you're an #iOS #developer, love #opensource, and have a certain passion for email, you should definitely keep an eye on the #Thunderbird careers page!

thunderbird.net/careers/

Within the next few months, we'll be hiring someone to help us lay the groundwork for Thunderbird on iOS. When that career opportunity goes live, we will announce it here.

(So yes, we can 100% confirm we plan to develop an iOS version)

Staying still in the land of open source projects, this slipped yesterday through my Reddit reading:
FeedGears is a web-based, self-hostable RSS client with particular attention to accessibility. According to the dev, it was tested against the WCAG 2.1 guidelines on the AA level, has integrated shortcuts, consistent keyboard navigation and automatic announcements for system events. It's pretty new so a lot of features might be missing but that's for the contact mechanisms and the feedback. :)
I haven't tested this myself yet but the landing page looks definitely alright.

Browsing Github last night, I came across two interesting, potentially accessible open source projects related to radio.
1. Salamandra Radio - an automation software for station in its early development. Screen reader specific fixes have been mentioned in the release notes and so were hotkeys, although these do not seem to be documented anywhere; the app starts in Portuguese by default but a change to English is possible in the settings; also buttons in the toolbar do not seem to be labelled but upon focusing them, a tooltip is read out so we can go by those to tell what the buttons are doing.
github.com/ocarolino/salamandr…
2. Axios - a simple radio player supporting the Radio Browser API. It is accessible in a similar way as Salamandra, allows for searching the directory, playing whatever is found, and controlling the volume.
github.com/z1lvis/Axios
Feel free to explore, hack, spread the word or do whatever else you usually do in such cases.

Go Thunderbird! It's great to see an #OpenSource Project with such a long history thrive.

I can't wait to finally have Sync on all my devices.

While K-9 Mail is developed in the open, following its development on GitHub can be somewhat tedious for a casual observer. So we’re trying something new and summarizing the most notable things that happened in the past month as we head down the exciting road to Thunderbird for Android!

@IzzyOnDroid #opensource at its best:

I recently installed vector pinball from @fdroidorg - great to kill some time, and especially fun because of the sound effects and background music. Out of curiosity I followed the link to the README in it's github repo. In it, the author thanks the guy who added the sound effects and music, who wanted to try out a sound library for android and therefore sought out a silent open source game and created sounds and music for it. He wrote an article about it here: twittering.com/webarchive_arti…

So thanks to this exemplary #FOSS collaboration I'm having a good time, whenever I have a five minute break.

Here's an early look at some fun content we're launching next week!

We're calling it "Meet The Team." It's a series of conversations with each member of the #Thunderbird team, about stuff like:

☑️ When they fell in love with tech or software programming.

☑️ What attracted them to #OpenSource.

☑️ What their day-to-day looks like hacking on Thunderbird

☑️ And whatever else we decide to ask them and they're willing to answer!

We'll start with @alecaddd's origin story... Stay tuned for more!

Recently I've found a lightweight modern #opensource #audio #recorder app for #Android called #RecordYou. I like it that much so I've attempted to submit some #screenReader #accessibility improvements.
Let me know how do you like it once it's accepted.

This is my first experience with #Jetpack #Compose so bear with me and try to suggest improvements if you can please.

New phone who dis? It's real!
The #Librem5 is almost like the #PinePhone's big sibling (slightly more specced up) - a Linux pocket computerbox bringing desktop covergence to a phone - and @purism has contributed most of the code that allows Gnome/Phosh/Linux on a phone to resize desktop apps. Happy to finally get mine and support this project! Purism got slammed by supply chain issues during the pandemic and is now catching up on shipping ❤️ See puri.sm/ #foss #opensource #linux
