Where's the incentive for people to switch to XMPP if they can communicate with me there without having to leave #WhatsApp, #Signal, #Telegram, and whatever other bridges there are?

People don't like change, worse even, they actively resist it. I have friends and family on #Snikket, who are on each other's roster, but amongst themselves they _still_ use WhatsApp!

I'm under no illusion that they are only on Snikket to humour me.

And the only friend who took me up on my offer to set up his own Snikket server for his family, and recently closed his WhatsApp account, is migrating all his contacts to… 🥁🥁🥁 Signal! Because it's 'easier' to get them on Signal than XMPP. My suggestion to recommend #Quicksy as an easy way to get people onto XMPP went unanswered.

People hate change and love silos. Replace WhatsApp with Signal, X with Bluesky, Windows with macOS, Android with iOS, iOS with Android…

I give up 🤷🏻‍♂️.

@opensourceopenmind similarly, I got my family and friends to talk to me via #DeltaChat because I simply don't have #WhatsApp, #Telegram etc. in my phone, I never try to convince them talking about encryption or open source, I simply say "I don't use that apps, you can reach me in this one" and then it is about a practical problem and not ideological one, I don't go saying "you should uninstall whatsapp now" but they are more willing to respect/understand your own ideological decisions

Search: Used #DuckDuckGo and #StartPage for a long time but recently moved to a self hosted instance of #SearXNG

Messenger: Using both #WhatsApp & #Signal.

Spent a few days with the new #whatsApp UI on Windows.
So far, the experience is not as bad as it could be, but it's far from good as well:

- The time this Ui takes to load is painfully long. Understandable given essentially a whole entire browser is being spun up but that is a regression.
- Focus often doesn't stay where it's meant to when you leave and then return to the window. This worked fine in the previous version,thus a regression.
- Something in the underlying browser wrapper REALLY doesn't play nice with NVDA, often failing to properly focus or provide meaningful accessibility properties leading to an "unknown unknown unknown" reading. Not sure to what degree the Meta folks have control over this but if you're going to use third party wrappers you take on the responsibility of those wrappers malfunctioning and thus, regression.
- Resource usage has gone way up, I consider that a regression. #accessibility

It's finally new #WhatsApp app day on Windows for me. If you were thinking I would buck the trend by saying it's not all that bad, then I would have to seriously ask whether you've ever read any of my posts at all.

#ArcaneChat doesn't have delivery receipts, only read receipts, the only automatic responses the app does in your behalf is to handle invite links, for that to be abused you first have to share your invite link with a malicious contact, you can get in contact with random/public entity via their invite link and be safe, as long as it is not you the one sharing your invite link!

In #Signal / #WhatsApp as soon as you contact someone or they guess your number you are vulnerable

No, there was no leaked database of 3.5B #WhatsApp users. Researchers from Vienna simply used the contact discovery method with all possible phone numbers to get contact data of 3.5B users. They informed WhatsApp who kinda fixed it by setting rate limits for contact discovery and the researchers deleted their collected data. Read the paper instead of clickbait :)
