📣 Attention all custom ROM users and advocates for digital rights! 📣

Google's Play Integrity is limiting access to certain functionalities and applications for those using custom operating systems. This is a direct attack on the open-source community and a step towards further consolidating Google's monopoly in the mobile ecosystem.

The European Commission is aware of the situation, but has deemed it a low priority: europarl.europa.eu/doceo/docum…

It's time for us to take action and show Google and the EU how much we care about this issue! 💥

Sign the petition now to stop Google from limiting access to custom ROMs: change.org/p/stop-google-from-…

Not endorsing the #degoogle hashtag here just because a hell of a lot of spackle is needed for a comparable experience, but if you're interested in #cloud email servoces, this is one of the better ones in this space.

theguardian.com/technology/202…

This article discusses how to protect privacy, amidst concerns of increased government surveillance.

The article is aimed at Asylum seekers & immigrants to the US, but it's solid advice for anyone, really.

Recommendations include using encrypted messaging apps like Signal, Apple iMessage, and WhatsApp, and setting messages to disappear.

It also recommends minimizing data sharing and deleting data when possible, particularly from Google.

Hi, everyone. My name is Jean. Looking to connect with people here! I will follow you back! :D

Recently finished a PhD in cybersecurity, but quit academia right away. I just can't work there lol. I work in data by day, but Im a fulltime human rights activist and have spoken at various fora against digital dictatorship and BigTech's regulatory capture. I am a socialist and I have been for awhile now. I am working closely with various grassroot movement particularly within the digital rights/labour space.

I am into FLOSS, #privacy and #humanrights. I have foul mouth and I own it. Outside of my activism, I enjoy walking my dog, Heidi, #vegan food, gaming, programming #python, #dadjokes and makeup.

Real time collaboration software and text boxes that rapidly save drafts to the cloud essentially log your fingerprintable typing behavior. The industry refers to this information as “keystroke dynamics” or “typing biometrics”.

Other modern “operator signatures” are easier to minimize. A user can learn to obfuscate writing style, or can use keyboard navigation with different pointing devices to limit fingerprinting of mouse behavior.

Keystroke biometrics are difficult to anonymize without installing software such as kloak or browser extensions (the latter of which may add fingerprintable vectors) designed to cloak some of your typing habits. Signature typos, approximate typing speed, etc. will still leak. Alternatively, we could normalize typing messages out in a simple offline editors that don’t store revision history before pasting them into other input fields.

I've seen a number of toots today advising people against scanning random #QRCodes because they can be used in a number of malicious ways.

There are a number of legitimate ways people can use such codes to trick others, and it can require some deeper understanding of how systems work to avoid them. For that reason, I'm not going to contradict that recommendation, but I will add to it.

QR codes are usually just URLs encoded in a visual, machine-readable form, so they aren't necessarily more dangerous than a link. The danger comes from the fact that most scanner apps will directly open whatever URL you scan without giving you the opportunity to consider whether that's a good idea.

You can reduce the risk of scanning such codes by installing a better app which requires manual interaction to open URLs after decoding them.

For android users I recommend "BinaryEye", since it's open-source, ad-free, and has a bunch of other useful features.

Its github page links to both F-Droid and the play store:

I use an RSS feed for news, and I’m sure I’m not the only one here on the Fediverse who appreciates the convenience it offers, because it helps me stay informed in a way that suits my preferences.

How do you keep up with the important topics that matter to you?

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I’ve been on Fedi for a year now and have fallen in love with the platform, so here’s my introduction! I studied computer science with a focus on RTOS and FP/PL, but I’m about to start my final semester of law school. I’ll be practicing at a boutique firm that primarily handles IP cases once I’m barred. I foilboard and I play way too many rhythm games in and out of the arcade.

I contribute to open source projects where I can, and I write up my experience in my digital garden which I’ve been maintaining for over a year now. It’s also a good place to find usage tips for projects/tools that you might want to use.

My passion for tech also includes privacy, and I’m an advocate for minimizing your digital footprint. GenAI is a scam and its purveyors are causing real harm while they sell it as hard as they can.

Sad to see that @mozilla needs to layoff 30%😢

Is Google’s ban on paying Mozilla for including G Search in Firefox the reason?

If your #blind, #signal does nothing to protect your #privacy. They use #hcaptcha, so if you can’t see the images, you have to enable cross site cookies and give them a valid email. And if you want to contact signal about it, sending your device info via unencrypted email is the only way. This is not how privacy or #security work. You’re better off with iMessage. Or even watsapp! At least they don’t hand your data over to a third party captcha provider. Or send your device info via unencrypted email. #infosec#a11y#accessibility

If you are a menstruating person living in the US, stop using an app to track your period and do research about apps that will protect your data. Even better, ensure that whatever app you use does not phone home with your data at all #privacy

Hackers, #Infosec specialists and #privacy advocates are going to be very important in the months to come. Please read the EFF's surveillance self-defense guide ssd.eff.org/ and reduce as much as possible the information that companies like Google or Amazon collect about you. Fedi admins and moderators, help us keeping the people away from the online agressors. If possible, make sure the services you use are based in Europe. All hands on deck

Wild ass day in the Tor node operator world. Got an email from my VPS, forwarding a complaint from WatchDog CyberSecurity saying that my box was scanning SSH ports!

> Oh no, oh no, I knew I should have set up fail2ban, oh god why was I so lackadaisical!

So I remote in to the machine: no unusual network activity, no unusual processes, users, logins, command history, no sign that anything is doing anything I didn't tell it to do.

So what's up? Turns out there's been a widespread campaign where some actor is spoofing IPs to make it look like systems running Tor are scanning port 22: forum.torproject.org/t/tor-rel…

Operators from all over are saying they're getting nastygrams from their VPS providers because WatchDog is fingering their source IPs (which are being spoofed and NOT part of a global portscanning botnet).

@delroth did an amazing writeup of the whole thing here: delroth.net/posts/spoofed-mass…

Dit past binnen mutationfest.be/program

I've been using @Tutanota for a few years now and have been very happy with how they've grown. #Encryption for the common person in a simple no-nonsense platform is cool to see. Would love to see them continue to innovate with #privacy in mind like they have so far.

One irony of letting companies like Google run their spyware through our websites for "analytics" is how useless most of the information is to small/medium website owners.

Oh, 3% of my visitors are from Poland, and 8% use Firefox? Uh, OK, great insights … I guess. 🤷‍♂️

OTOH, that information is valuable to Google, because they can aggregate it with lots of other surveillance data for digital fingerprinting, etc.

We've been duped.

The rise of Mastodon has made me so much more aware of government services requiring us to use private companies’ systems to communicate with them and access services.

Sitting on a Dutch train just now I was shown on a screen “feeling unsafe in the train? Contact us via WhatsApp”.

What if I don’t use WhatsApp? (I do, but I wish I didn’t have to) I’m forced to share my data with Meta to use it.

Public systems should not require use of private services.
