To any #Voiceover users who are considering trying BlueSky, a word of warning.
It’s technicaly accessible, but presents a few problems. focus is never on a post, but on an element within a post. So you may find the Like button rather than the post itself, and you need to swipe through every element of each post. That’s a real pain. Also, some buttons either don’t work at all or do something unexpected.
I found navigation very difficult and was never quite sure where I was.
I haven’t found any images with Alt Text either.
The layout isn’t great.
All in all, it’s a bit of a trial to use. It’s almost as if they haven’t really bothered with #Accessibility. Fancy that!
Perhaps I should persevere with it, but, quite frankly, life’s too short, so I won’t be using it.

Oh fargh... I just realized how daunting this new venture into #Macbook territory is. I have to learn an entirely new operating system as well as an entirely new DAW. I tend to do better at this sort of thing if I have access to an ordered way of doing things, like some sort of course... lessons, etc. There's somebody I'd love to learn from despite the fact I'm stupidly intimidated by them, but I don't think I can afford the nearly $65 an hour price tag. I've just jumped off a cliff and am plummeting toward unknown waters... Help? #Blind #Musician #MacOS #Logic #Komplete #A11y #Voiceover

A friend of mine, also blind and a very advanced user, tried to send me a Zoom meeting invitation with a Mac. Here's what happened:
1. Instead of a meeting at 4 pm the meeting was set to last from 8 PM previous day to 4 PM next day;
2. the appointment location contained only this: "[Name Redacted] is inviting you to a Zoom meeting.";
3. The appointment body was totally empty, so no Zoom link was available.
That's all you need to know about #Accessibility and usability of a Mac with #VoiceOver.
To prevent a holy war of devoted Mac fans, I am not telling you this is completely impossible. I'm just telling you that on Windows it's a breeze for a blind user and I even don't know how to achieve such messy results here.

Attention all #remoteIncidentManager technicians who may be assisting end users running macOS Sequoia:
Recent changes in macOS Sequoia have created some challenges for our Remote Accessibility Module, which allows seamless assistance without revealing the technician’s disability.
Due to changes in how #VoiceOver settings are managed in macOS Sequoia, visually impaired technicians may experience issues that disrupt their ability to perform tasks discreetly. We’ve identified these problems and are working with Apple’s Accessibility team to find a long-term solution, but we need your help to make sure this critical issue is prioritized.
If you’ve experienced difficulties using RIM on macOS Sequoia, we encourage you to contact Apple’s Accessibility department - accessibility@apple.com - and politely but firmly advocate the prioritization of a reliable API that allows for safe, controlled adjustments to VoiceOver.
Spread this message far and wide! Together, we can push for better accessibility and maintain the tools that empower visually impaired professionals, while fully preserving their dignity by preventing non-consensual disclosure of disability. Accessibility is a right to inclusivity, and true inclusivity in this case must allow for the fair and equal treatment of visually impaired technicians in this stage of the support process.

Wonder if any other #Blind #iOS 18.2 beta 1 users are seeing a serious #VoiceOver regression?
I suspect this relates to a specific kind of list control, but in certain apps, as I flick left or right through items, VoiceOver just goes silent on certain items. Sometimes, if you flick left to the previous item and then right to get back to the item that wasn’t speaking before, you hear the item, at other times you don’t, and the only way to hear the currently focussed item is to perform a three-finger single tap.
I am seeing this after trying several voices, and making a few other changes that I thought might work around the problem. So far, I haven’t found a fix.
I am seeing this in a list of articles in the Lire RSS Reader, it’s happening a little here in Mona, and it is also reproduceable if I go into VoiceOver settings and flick through the items in the What’s New in VoiceOver screen.
It is speech only. If you have a Braille display connected, you can read the item in Braille even when VoiceOver doesn’t speak it.
I’d be curious to know if others are seeing it, because if it is widespread, it could be a reason for those who rely heavily on their iPhones to give the public beta a miss assuming this first build goes out to public beta.

Right, I'm going to do something I dislike, but I literally don't know how else to get support to follow up with me.
I have indeed submitted two support requests in the intervening time, i'm not just being lazy I promise.
On 17 Aug I made a video about #FloatPlane accessibility and how not good it is.
I wasn't a troll, I was constructive and thoughtful, and yet I cannot get a hold of anyone at either Floatplane Media or LTT.
If *anyone* happens to know someone at one of these companies and could get my video to them, I'd be extremely grateful.
The other thing I really dislike doing is asking if people could boost for reach, but I'll make an exception.
Fedi is big now, and far more reaching than modern-day xitter, so all help gratefully received.
I thank you in advance.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good #rss reader that works well with #VoiceOver?

one of my real pain points with the iPhone is composing emails using the built-in mail app with #voiceover. It’s got slightly better with iOS 18, but the Misspelt Words option in the rotor still does not work. This might not be an issue for some, but for me I cannot send emails on the phone with confidence that it is written accurately and looks professional. I know there's the option of writing it in the Notes app, reviewing it and then pasting it into Mail, but come on! That's such a clunky workaround.

Is Mail any better on the iPad at all? I would quite like something that is an in between device to a laptop and a phone that I could use to quickly write emails, make additions to documents, write quick notes etc, and in that sense the iPad could be a nice fit, but if iPadOS has the same issues as the iOS versions then meh, it might not add much for me. Any thoughts?

Well this is certainly interesting. On Series 10 #AppleWatch using #Voiceover, a two-finger triple tap seems to toggle speech, as well as a three-finger double tap. Is there a way to enable Voiceover Help like you can on iPhone with a four-finger double tap so that I can see what gestures are actually registering? I don't know if my fingers are just too fat and so magic tap isn't working or what. I have activated the hand gesture for this though, and it doesn't work either. So I'm just stuck. I love my magic tap gesture, and the fact I can't get it to work at all on the Apple Watch is really obnoxious.

#blind #voiceover users, what are your favorite custom commands? On ios, for example, I have a 4 finger swipe down set to paste. On mac, I have a commander that opens my writing app of choice. What are your favorite time saving custom commands?

Okay guys, #Voiceover user here. Every time I open a message notification on my #AppleWatch and go to reply, dictation comes up automatically as soon as I double tap on the text box. This is fine initially because I can just dictate my message, but how do I get out of dictation mode when I'm finished composing my message?? Turning dictation off in settings makes it so where I'm not able to manually enable it in message text fields. Magic tap doesn't get me out... Help?

The official #luesky app works fine with #voiceover on #ios for the most part. Everything is #accessible with some minor weirdness.

I just wrote a tip for the book about how difficult I found it getting the new BSI activation gesture to work. TURNS OUT. My BSI Activation Gesture setting was toggled off. On my new phone? Anyone else see Off as a default? Also, if you can’t get the gesture to work, go find that toggle in BSI settings. #a11y #ios #voiceover

Well then. It looks like #Spotify now switches tracks on you if ever you swipe left from the top of the screen or swipe right from the bottom of the screen. I don't know if this only happens in the Now Playing view, but whatever the case, I absolutely loathe this behavior as a #Voiceover user.

As we are up to extend our AX tests to the three screen readers Jaws, NVDA and VoiceOver, I am looking for an overview page that lists the differences.
Which elements are put out by which screen reader, how does the output differ?
I've seen such an overview linked within mastodon a while ago. The web site contained a table with elements and their output in the three named screen readers.
Maybe one of you knows where I can find such an overview.

My plea to all iOS apps developers for 2024: for the love of everything that is humane, use Apple's native photo picker. Was trying to get started with a couple of apps that require a photo upload and all VoiceOver kept saying was "Thumbnail, button" "Image, button" "Photo, button". Only yesterday I figured it is possible to get the native experience when uploading a screenshot for a technical support representative to see. I have a lot of photos where I know what's on them and that they're the ones I want to upload but I need at least the date they were taken. Thanks! #Accessibility #Blind #Apple #iOSDev #VoiceOver

Congrats to the great people at #OmniGroup making great productivity apps for #Apple platforms. Their accessibility with #VoiceOver is outstanding. The operation is more convenient than the built-in reminders app.

Nutzung einer externen Tastatur mit VoiceOver am iPhone: Ein Paar Gedanken
#VoiceOver #blind #iPhone #Accessibility

By popular request, #Voiceover no longer reads phone numbers of #WhatsApp group participants who aren’t in your contacts, and just reads the push name. You can still read the phone number on their contact info page, or by swiping up to the “message <phone number>” option in the actions rotor. This should make catching up with your groups much faster and more efficient! Thanks so much for your feedback, please keep sending it.

And to add to the joy at least for this hour of this day those of us on the #EastCoast can once again search for replacement items within the #iOSApp using #VoiceOver #Accessibility. It only took them 5 months to fix that one.

Here's a video I want to age like curdled milk. Age so quickly it's out-of-date a week after it's made. The issues I've outlined here should be fairly simple fixes if they follow Apple's accessibility guidelines, so here's hoping someone at Floatplane Media can get some eyes on this.
I've tried to be as fair as possible, not just to make a 'bitch and ditch' style video, and to showcase the issues I have.
Please boost if you have an interest, or know that it can potentially reach someone who can make a difference.
Not my cup of tea to ask for those under normal circumstances, so I will not be making a habit of it.
Thanks.

A massive thanks to @davetaylor2112 for alerting me to the UK train ifo app for iOS, 'Nearly Departed.'
Why I didn't know about this or use it sooner is beyond me. It was invaluable yesterday. They also explicitly mention #VoiceOver on the main page, so props to them for that.

'Accessible
The app has been extensively tested with iOS accessibility features, such as VoiceOver and Dynamic Type.'

If you take a lot of national rail trains in the UK and use iOS, you need this app too.

I've just pushed a bunch of #accessibility changes for screen readers to the main branch of FediThready. ( It makes long texts into post sized chunks)

I've run through it with #VoiceOver and it _seems_ ok. HOWEVER it all feels like it's "usable" instead of "good".

If there's a #a11y geek out there who uses screen readers regularly I would REALLY appreciate some suggestions on how to make this actually feel good for folks who rely on screen readers.

github.com/masukomi/fedithread…

@nick #Sonos has replaced its app not because they truly think the app is better. But because they can replace specialised Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS teams with one generic team who know how to use cross-platform tools.

It goes beyond that, though. Look at the ideas behind the new home screen, which essentially can be described as: "put what you want on it". Is that primarily a user-facing improvement? No.

Rather, it's a reason to not rely on designers who can carefully think through information architecture, viewport sizes, user flows, and the best ways to present information. Make it the user's problem so that they can fire the people whose responsibility it used to be, or move them to another team where they won't be able to do their best work and will eventually quit and not be replaced.

This update goes way beyond #accessibility. It's a fundamental shift in how they do business, and it will be shit for everyone. That, more than the lack of #VoiceOver support, is what will probably cause me to move away from their ecosystem.

I wrote an article about how to make hastags accessible. Did some #ScreenReader testing with #JAWS, #NVDA, #VoiceOver and #Narrator, which was fun!

Pretty long one though, contains a bunch of tables for comparison. Enjoy the ride!
