The first article in one of our national newspapers this morning about the launch of the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (#EDIC) today 🍾🇪🇺

Each month we make a financial donation to an #opensource project we highly value or depend upon.

This month our featured project is @thunderbird , a superb and rejuvenated cross platform Email & Calendar client, distributed under #MPL2. We have used it ourselves for most of the past 22 years and would recommend it to our customers.

Find more information here: thunderbird.net

Recently we completed a security audit of Thunderbird Send, our upcoming end-to-end encrypted large file sharing service, with the help of the @ostifofficial and 7ASecurity. Read our summary of the report's findings, and learn how we've acted on these recommendations to be more secure and worthy of the trust our user community places in us.

Let's secure the future of GNOME together and enable us to do even more great work next year.

Máte s tím někdo zkušenost? V chatu jsou zmiňované i alternativy jako Nextcloud a Matrix. Nějaký názor?

Today's #FreeSoftwareAdvent is all about XMPP.

Snikket (snikket.org/) is an easy-to-install, and easy-to-administer, XMPP server. It is designed for families and other small groups. The apps for Android and iOS (based on Conversations, I think) are great.

Dino (dino.im/) is my desktop XMPP client of choice.

Profanity (profanity-im.github.io/) is a terminal / console XMPP client, which is incredibly convenient.

Why not have a fun festive project of setting up an XMPP-based chat server for you and your family and friends?

Schleswig-Holstein reports €15M yearly savings by replacing Microsoft 365 with LibreOffice across most government workplaces 💶

About 80% of offices have migrated, with a €9M one-time investment planned for 2026 to finish the shift and strengthen open-source tools 🧩

I decided not to buy a new PC this #blackfriday due to overpriced #DDR5 #DRAM - thanks AI bros for scalping all the modules, and memory manufacturers for all the (past) cartels. Instead, I chose to #donate to the following #opensource projects, which I use and I am grateful for, and provide clear instructions for donating on their website or in their READMEs, allow one-time donations, and do not require GitHub (Sponsors) account:

Thought: if #open, #federated, and #distributed solutions were the most #accessible solutions, people with disabilities would be some of the biggest allies in pushing adoption. I already constantly have to get my friends, co-workers, etc, to switch tools for me. If we're working or playing together, the tool needs to be accessible if I'm involved. But unfortunately, that's almost never the case, and I find myself having to force my friends to switch away from open tools and into closed ones:
* Jitsi meet doesn't offer captions or transcripts, and still had an unlabeled button or two last I checked. So I usually have to force people working with me to switch to Zoom.
* github is still more accessible than Forgejo and codeberg, even with the recent regressions. So I won't contribute to projects that aren't on github.
* None of the existing Matrix clients offer good accessibility; they either lag, have unlabeled controls, the message list won't scroll, messages won't read as they come in, etc. So I have to force people onto Slack or Discord.
* Neither Only Office or Next Cloud offer a web interface that works for collaboration with screen readers, so I have to force people to use Google Docs.
* Linux accessibility remains a joke compared to Windows or mac.

And on and on it goes. #opensource#fediverse#federation

This year brought great improvements to #accessibility in GNOME, including:

• Accessibility from the start on the login screen
• Full accessibility of GNOME Web
• Tons of improvements to Calendar
• Screen reader integration for Notifications
• Configure #Orca screen reader from Settings
• GTK apps integrated w/Windows & macOS accessibility

Help us reach 1,500 #FriendsOfGNOME so we can focus on accessibility even more in 2026!

This year we delivered new Digital Wellbeing features for GNOME including Screen Time history and limits, break reminders for movement and eye health, and improved parental controls with Screen Time integration.

This work was coordinated by the GNOME Foundation thanks to a grant from Endless, and implemented by valued community developers @pwithnall and @ignapk with support from design team member @snwh.

Is it cool that Linus Torvalds uses Fedora Linux? Yes!

But the really cool thing is to use the Linux distro that works best for you. :)

Having Linux get covered on LTT is such a big win for the open source community as more techies realize there is another way!

Petition in Germany to recognize unpaid contribution to free and open source software projects as 'society-beneficial volunteering' (ehrenamt)!

This will give volunteering for e.g. @postmarketOS , @freifunk , @kde , @nextcloud , @Mastodon and other libre projects the same legal status as taking care of an elderly family member, which provides tax benefits and relaxes requirements for receiving unemployment benefits.
