Are you interested in hosting #GUADEC2025 in your city? Make sure to let us know by submitting your intent to bid by May 3! https://foundation.gnome.org/2024/04/18/call-for-guadec-2025-location-proposals/

This is not your full proposal, just a short form that lets us know who you are and where you want to host.

After more annoyances that Gnome/RedHat is pulling lately ( https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/adwaita-icon-theme/-/issues/288 ), I just donated to #Linux #Mint, instead of my original intention, #Gnome.

The Gnome Project is a wall-garden, but not of the Apple kind. It's a club of mostly #Redhat programmers & a few select others, and either you're in it, or you're not. Your user needs, your bug reports, your patches, all end up on /dev/null. They listen to no one. Never have, never will.

So, my money went to a fork.

We are happy to announce that GNOME was assigned eight slots for Google Summer of Code projects this year!

GSoC is a program focused on bringing new contributors into open source software development. A number of long term GNOME developers are former GSoC interns, making the program a very valuable entry point for new members in our project.

In 2024 we will mentoring the following projects:

As part of the contributor’s acceptance into GSoC they are expected to actively participate in the Community Bonding period (May 1 – 26). The Community Bonding period is intended to help prepare contributors to start contributing at full speed starting May 27.

The new contributors will soon get their blogs added to Planet GNOME making it easy for the GNOME community to get to know them and the projects that they will be working on.

We would like to also thank our mentors for supporting GSoC and helping new contributors enter our project.

If you have any doubts, feel free to reply to this Discourse topic or message us privately at soc-admins@gnome.org

Hi all. Hoping there are some #blind #linux users out there that can help me out. I'm using an old computer, not the one I mentioned in my previous posts, but a different one, and #Orca isn't speaking. I originally installed #Ubuntu Mate, but Orca was freezing a lot, so I switched my #DesktopEnvironment to #KDEPlasma. It seemed like a lot of things were inaccessible, though, so I decided to try #Gnome. I installed Gnome, chose GDM as the display manager, and restarted the computer. Now, Orca works on the login screen but nowhere else. It seems to be running, and when I run "orca --replace" in the terminal, I get an error about something only working with X11. I've been able to tell that by scanning the screen with #SeeingAI on my #iPhone. I need to get Orca up and running again so I can use my computer. What's the best way to do this, preferably without sighted help, as my mom and stepdad aren't good with #technology.

#postmarketOS isn't just for phones!

Here it is running #GNOME on a recovered 2012-era #macbook (everything works!) 🥳

We are excited to announce that #LAS2024 will be held in Monterrey, Mexico! Join us on October 4-5 in person or online. More updates will come soon at: https://linuxappsummit.org

Thank you so much for your patience! Let's GO!

Excited to see Typescript support for Workbench (#GNOME app by @sonny and others) work in progress!!

#postmarketos #linuxmobile #gnome I have been daily driving PMOS edge with Gnome mobile on my OnePlus 6 for a week now. So far quite pleased with the performance, despite a few glitches, so I decided to donate some money to both of the providers making this possible - PMOS and Gnome. Thank you for making this possible. Looking forward to further development.

p.s. Managed to get the flashlight working today, another bonus! d.s.

Thanks to @slomo the #gstreamer #gtk gtk4paintablesink just got support for DMABuf (and thus Wayland/KMS) passthrough \o/

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/gstreamer/gst-plugins-rs/-/merge_requests/1547

This will allow to make video playback in various apps much faster. And, if everything works out, allow the same for Camera viewfinders in apps like #gnome camera / snapshot 🤞

Is Totem (Gnome Videos) still maintained? As per https://apps.gnome.org/Totem/ latest version is 43 from 2022. Is it going to be removed from Gnome Core apps or replaced with something new?

After a great week for Linux, with the releases of Fedora 40 and today Ubuntu 24.04, I would be interested to know which operating system the Fediverse in my "bubble" uses? Linux? Windows? Or macOS or even a BSD? More than one?

Please write in the comments which distribution or version! Thanks for participating and SHARING!

You don't need a new computer for up-to-date software ... just the right software!

Come to #Umweltfestival 2024 in #Berlin to learn about the role of independent #FreeSoftware in the sustainable use of hardware.

🗓️ Sunday 28 April, 11-19h
📍 Straße des 17. Juni (Brandenburg Gate)

#KDEEco together with #FSFE (@fsfe) and Bits & Bäume (@bitsundbaeume_berlin) will be there! Some in the #GNOME and #postmarketOS community may be joining as well :)

Welcome to our newest GNOME Foundation member @eeejay 🎉

Eitan has been involved in Linux/GNOME accessibility for 20 years and is on the Mozilla accessibility team.

In the past he created Accerciser, and contributed to Orca as well as Telepathy.

Eitan makes Spiel; a speech framework for the freedesktop.

I heard you might be able to catch him at GUADEC in Denver this year.

For a mere £1M - the amount of engineering that the @gnome project has been doing this year is nothing short of phenomenal. The App Ecosystem is worth investing in.

WTF? Is #Tenacity on the #Flatpak store #MALWARE? Apparently it was running in the bg AS IF it was an invincible #Gnome extension so SystemMonitor/htop would NOT see it as a process. But #MissionCenter (also from flatpak store) saw it as it is: an app running on startup! Killing it killed Gnome session! It was also spiking wifi, and was leaking the Gnome gjs service from 4MB RAM to 120MB. Uninstalling fixed the prob

Third party flatpak/snaps should be vetted.

Dear GNOME, GTK and friend developers 🧑‍💻 :gnome:

Have you ever encountered an issue with #Blueprint? Please file an issue, and we'll look at it for Blueprint 1.0

https://gitlab.gnome.org/jwestman/blueprint-compiler/-/issues

We aim for supporting all GTK builder syntax and 100% XML↔Blueprint porting compatibility.

@sonny It's a tricky one, but I think it should be doable to make it work somehow. For being featured the first screenshot is most important, you can preview that here: https://docs.flathub.org/banner-preview

More generally, I'd reduce the number of screenshots to 3 or so (e.g. first, second, last) and avoid manual compositing with multiple windows as much as possible. Happy to discuss this more in detail, but might be better on Matrix, e.g. #flathub or #gnome-design :)
