This morning a #Mastodon friend called me out on my name-calling of our current President. They said it was hypocritical to do something we tell our kids not to do. I’ve sat with this all day. I actually care about my friend’s opinion, and, hey, I’m not a malignant narcissist. Upon reflection, I must admit that they are absolutely, 100% correct. I am being hypocritical, and at the end of the day it’s really not a good look. But, will this knowledge cause me to stop? Very frankly speaking, I don’t think so. Before you condemn me as a bad person, please allow me to explain where I’m coming from. This presidency has been like none other in my lifetime. I’ve had presidents in the past with whom I disagreed on policy, oftentimes vehemently so. See also Bush, George W. But these were strictly policy disagreements. I never once questioned W’s humanity. But #Trump is something completely different. Almost all of his policies go way beyond abhorrent, but it goes deeper than that. He’s the first president I’ve ever known of who has actively, and deliberately, set out to actually punish those who didn’t vote for him or support him, to hurt them, make them suffer. I actually think that’s a lot of what this #SNAP hostage crisis is all about. He has shown, in countless ways, that he has zero respect for anything or anyone aside from himself. Mastodon is quite silly. It almost looks to me like looking at a trunk line of conversations. Or perhaps a trunk radio system. There is little to no flow to anything, parts and snips of conversation are everywhere, and a lot of things are unrelatable, even with the fetch all replies feature. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Not to mention the annoyance of having to open each thread to check what's available, every, single, time...
And even when it appears to be working, and you've opened the thread, and you're seeing replies, you're still left scratching your head, well did it really fetch everything? Is there more to the story?
However, the Mastodon project sure is actively and vibrantly being maintained and enhanced, so I am hoping threading becomes a greater focus and increased reliability comes in the near future.

Y'know, I think people like the Jimmy Truths dude serve as an example of the shortcomings of #Fediverse moderation. This dude has likely made like, hundreds of accounts on dozens of instances, but all the instance owners can do is suspend his account. It's gotten to the point where the dude now keeps coming back with usernames and posts mocking the admins for being unable to permanently remove him, often on the same instance repeatedly.
Larger companies can do things like send cease and desist letters, contact his ISP, hardware ban him, etc a lot easier. They simply have more resources to deal with really tenacious harassers than the average instance admin does. I'm not a networking expert, but I wish there was a way to actually deal with guys like this because as the Fediverse grows in popularity, it's likely more users like this guy will crop up.
I can imagine it being pretty easy for bad actors to focus their attention on a single instance and overwhelm it if there's enough of them. Or people like this dude so persistent and obnoxious that it wears the often volunteer staff down over a long stretch of time.
There seriously needs to be focus put on improving moderation tools for Mastodon before we get to that point.
What do you use for Mastodon on Android?
Looking for client that can do multi accounts, remote timeline pinning, remote hashtag feed pinning, drafts, threads auto split and maybe does not look like trash.
Basically I am looking for something as close to @MonaApp as possible.
I tried Fedilab but it is not even close. Phanpy, although a web app is actually great. Now looking for a native app that does as good.
There’s an accessibility bug on Mastodon: you cannot add custom alt text to your profile or header image. This means people using screen readers can’t know what these images show, so important info is missing for visually impaired users. ♿

#nextcloud made it possible for me to (self-)host my (and my family's) phone calendars, contacts, and even when pictures are taken, they get uploaded to our Nextcloud instance, and NOT to google/apple.
10/10, would recommend for any household looking to #degoogle.

Maybe if you very explicitly only count #Mastodon instances, but if you mean the #Fediverse instances, you're quite incorrect. The Fediverse hosts a very wide array of opinions, though I would not be surprised if your instance has a sizable blocklist which makes you feel like this is not the case. Hugboxes are quite dangerous, yet some fedi admins, especially Mastodon ones, seem hellbent on ensuring they never ever hear any opinion they disagree with. If you feel like the Fediverse hosts only a particular viewpoint, I would highly suggest joining a better instance.

As I said in the previous toot, this is most likely to do by the kind of instances you adopt. If you're only sticking to #Mastodon instances with admins that consider it a hate crime to disagree on something, then yes, that will be your experience. I'm unsure as to why, but Mastodon instance admins seem extremely eager to defederate from other instances on a whim.

I support this too. Individual users can block people they disagree with, because they're only hurting themselves if they create their own hugbox through these actions. Admins doing it for their users is morally wrong. It leads to this situation where you don't even know that most opinions are blocked from your view.

Definitely! If you truly believe in what you typed here, I strongly urge you to either self-host, or find an instance with admins that do not wish to act as fascist dictators to fulfill their own fantasies. In general, I recommend to stay away from #Mastodon instances because it seems the norm there, although there are a few instances with reasonable admins. If at all possible, self-host an instance, so you can be totally sure no insane controlfreaks can ruin your experience. Its also better to have many small instances for the Fediverse in general!

I dislike the idea of them federating here, too. The people that come to the #Fediverse do so because they dislike the proprietary platforms and their tactics of manipulation for profit. Getting them here would only lower the quality of discourse on the Fediverse.

This seems like a weak argument. Any instance I might show you, you can just add to any blocklist at that moment just to ensure you're always right. Besides, getting blocked by incompetent power-hungry #Mastodon admins requires no bad intent on the blockee's part, so it holds no meaning to be blocked in itself.
I know my instance is blocked by a few dozen other instances, but that doesn't mean my instance is unusable. On the contrary, the instances that don't block me value free and open discussion of any idea, which means that my experience of the Fediverse is much more wide in opinion than yours can ever be.
