@nah @fvsch @sonny @matt But here’s the thing: Wayland would never have been made the default if, say, fonts didn’t render correctly. Not having a functional screen reader is as big an issue for people who rely on screen readers. So at some point, someone at Canonical decided that it didn’t matter that people who use screen readers would be excluded. And so they should be ashamed.

I am currently working on #accessibility in #forgejo. And I discovered a problem with focus where it is not possible to navigate the page with "tab", a dropdown makes the focus skip to the end of the page and you end up in a loop.

Can someone recommend ways or tools to debug focus in webbrowsers? I have a hard time to see how the focus skips there. Any hints are welcome.

Thank you.

So @gnome is removing the x11 session, leaving just the Wayland one.

If this goes out before Orca, the GNOME screen reader, is fixed to work on Wayland, it will mean that people who rely on screen readers will have no way to use one on GNOME. And thus on the major Linux distributions.

So I’m hoping the plan is that this change will not land until GNOME has a working screen reader.

Streamah! You know I am a streamah!
Been a minute, but let's pick it back up today. We're looking at Spider Man 2, a #game on the #ps5 which received some #accessibility updates, including #audioDescription, recently. This Stumble Saturday, we be swinging into spider webs and, no doubt, fall off them with equal fervor. See you there in an hour over at twitch.tv/zersiax #gamerWithoutSight #twitch #streamer #goingLive

People who use #ScreenReaders, imagine a feature on your instance where you can automatically hide any post that contains images/videos without alt text.

If you reply with an opinion and YOU PERSONALLY don't need alt text for accessibility reasons, I will probably block you.

One point I’m always at pains to make to my web design students is that accessibility isn’t an add-on to your design. You have to be as inclusive as possible from the outset.

Anyway, I thought this was a great article on designing for people with colour blindness:

One thing the article omits is the fantastic accessibility in Firefox Developer Edition.

Perhaps these tools aren't well known — they're in the web inspector. It’s a great way to test your site.

Hi there everyone, please boost. I've been sending this around in different places to indevidual people, but I figure, now that the book has been out for a while, its about time I put it up publicly. My dad wrote a book some time ago that is essentially a resource guide that helps people with disabilities find jobs or look to find resources to maximize there benefits. It is a step by step guide on what to do, how to find jobs, how to maximize your SSI/SSDi benefits, and how to get on the job market. its completely free and available for anyone to use. If you follow this guide, I am confident that you will be able to find what you seek job-wise. I know I am a little bit biased because my dad wrote it, but I feel like its worth putting out there anyway. There is no advertising whatsoever, we aren't looking for any sort of things in return, in fact, my dad even put his own personal number in the book for those who follow the steps and read the book to call him so he can help you find a job as well because he's helped many many people find jobs who have disabilities, his most recent success being a person with a High School Diploma and nothing more going from making less than $30000 to now making just over $100000 at his job. here it is:
respectability.org/people-with… If you read the book, please feel free to reach out to me so I can also get you in contact as he's in Pacific time whereas I am not and its better if I text him first to let him know someone will call him, because he usually doesn't answer random calls especially with his job and his other stuff going on. #Blind #disability #Accessibility #Jobs #Employment #SSI

For IRC lovers who also happen to love and use Linux, I have some good news for you! I have created hooks for the Smuxi IRC client that add sound support for message events. So far only send and receive are supported along with a different sound if your name is mentioned in a message, but more are on the way! Smuxi is extremely accessible, Orca supports auto reading of messages received and sent automatically, the only thing missing was sound support. Instructions on using the hooks as well as the hooks themselves are here:

@Bri I think they've done some amazing #accessibility work as for the first release. I find the non-screen UI a bit too complicated and somewhat chatty, but it might be a good thing for many people. I am still getting used to the workflow because some of the essential statuses are missing. Anyway, just my experience!

NV Access is very pleased to announce the release of our updated Microsoft Word with NVDA training module. Available now from nvaccess.org/product/microsoft… Extensively rewritten, the module incorporates the latest NVDA and Office 365 features and keystrokes. At only $32 Australian (Roughly $20 USD / 19€ - converted at checkout), it's very affordable. #Training #NVDA #NVDAsr #Accessibility #ScreenReader #Learning #Word #Microsoft #Office

I think this article, while somewhat radical and presumptuous, does have some good points, at least the ones I agree with.
I do think generative AI might have a potential of creating on-demand user interfaces to “personalize” #accessibility, but I think we forget about a human element here. Someone has to build such smarts and, as long as disabled people are deprioritized, whatever the reasons may be, the outcome will likely be not much different.

one thing that i'd love the WebAim screen reader survey to differentiate better is how results break down by OS (mainly to be able to have more segmented "on Mac, VoiceOver is effectively the only screen reader used" or similar). it might then also reframe some of the other statements/results, e.g. "71.6% of respondents use more than one desktop/laptop screen reader" ... I suspect those 71.6% are effectively Windows users? webaim.org/projects/screenread… #a11y #accessibility

@the esoteric programmer On linux #Accessibility is working fine with #GTK4 if a screen reader is already running. I think you can try to follow the tutorial you like and try to pay extra attention to the keyboard navigation, focus handling and labelling controls that don't have the text by default.

So excited to announce that I am one of five honorees to be granted the 2024 SXSW Community Service Award! This was something I simply wasn't expecting and I'm absolutely floored to be recognized for my work in accessibility :). If you're attending and would like to meet up, please let me know and maybe we can figure something out! More info and link below:

4) Last October, Google launched Lens in Maps (formerly Search with Live View). This feature uses AI and augmented reality to help you find information about nearby stores. Now, this feature has been upgraded with screen reader support, so you can point your phone’s camera at your surroundings and have TalkBack read the place’s information out loud.

We've had great feedback on our recent In-Process article on creating portable copies of NVDA. A lot of people use them for testing out beta's of new versions, particularly 2024.1. Have you been trying the 2024.1 betas, and do you use a portable version to do it? If you'd like to find out more, check out our article here: nvaccess.org/post/in-process-9…

So, Envision is doing this survey. It says to choose my country. I can't type U N to search ahead to United States. I can't hit the End key to move any nearer to it. So I closed the tab. I do *not* have time for AT companies that can't test any outgoing communications, or media, or surveys, or whatever, for accessibility.

I hope #accessibility folks here are signed up for Axe-con, Feb 20-22nd. I’m regularly impressed with the high caliber accessibility talks which are available to everyone for free. Deque’s axe is integrated into so many accessibility tools in 2024, and is playing such a critical role in evaluating against many WCAG 2.2 issues.

If you haven’t already, consider signing up:
deque.com/axe-con/register/

There are amazing speakers. It’s free and also allows you to view many of the talks afterward.
