Spent the last 6 hours trying to get a hello world equivalent gui window with a button on rust under windows.

This task which one might think is simple ended up taking literal hours and still hasn't been achieved because: the tutorials for gtk on windows and rust suggest putting msys2 bin directory on the path. This causes rust to fail to build correctly because it uses the wrong gcc and linkers.
Afterwards I managed it by using the appropriate environment variables.
But then I found out the dynamically linked libarries weren't found. I tried getting a way to copy them but it turned out to be too much work so I just moved the executable to the same dir.
Only to find out that gtk4 has no accessibility on Windows. Not bad accessibility, not accessibility that needs to be turned on. No. Accessibility. At all.
So then I decided to try Qt, which wants me to create an account to get an installer. Absolute no.
Got the 1.5gb sources and trying now to get an off-line installer out of it.

To get a fucking window with a button in it.

I don't think it's unreasonable for me to say this state of affairs is complete bullshit, and that most people with a normal level of motivation would have found plenty of opportunities to have given up. I still might.

(Not using NWG because tying the data to the GUI elements is non-trivial, it seems to require copying a lot and using twice the memory.)

This will turn off #Recall (the periodic screenshot service) and #Copilot (the AI assistant service).

1. Download and install the Windows 11 24H2 administrative template files: microsoft.com/en-us/download/d…

2. Add the files from C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Group Policy\Windows 11 Sep 2024 Update (24H2)\PolicyDefinitions to C:\Windows\SYSVOL\domain\Policies\PolicyDefinitions on the domain controller.

3. Start Group Policy Management on the domain controller.

4. Create a group policy object with these values:

User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows AI > Turn off Saving Snapshots for Windows = enabled

User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Copilot > Turn off Windows Copilot = enabled

5. Link the group policy object in at an appropriate level in your domain.

Well, there are a few options

If everything is a little small, you might consider changing your scaling in Display Settings

If just one random thing is too small, even if that app doesn't have zoom, you can always pull up Magnifier with WIN + Plus to zoom in (WIN + Minus to zoom out, WIN + Esc to close)

If text in general across Windows is too small, then check out the text size option under Accessibility

didn't know this before, and didn't have to because i haven't installed windows in the past 10 years. but for those who need to do this, this workaround should be known:

Thankfully, there remains another way to install Windows 11 without a Microsoft account. When you’re at the log-in screen, you can hit Shift + F10 and type OOBE/BYPASSNRO, which will let you create a local account instead if you do not have an internet connection (so disconnect the internet for this).

ICQ is closing down. It was really at its height in 2000 and that is when we integrated ICQ into Opera. We made a small (5k) client and it worked really well.

AOL had purchased ICQ and they were concerned about MSN taking users from them by connecting to their service, so they stopped supporting 3rd party clients. We contacted them, to see if they would make an exception for us, but they did not.

They said that if we removed our 5k client, we could maybe discuss bundling their client, but it was bigger than Opera, so that was not going to happen.

The best ways to improve opsec against coercion are to:

• Limit what can be taken (reduce what’s stored on a device).
• Fake what you do have: use duress passwords or secondary devices.
• Last resort: use a hardware key that’s deliberately easy to lose or break, so there’s potentially no key to give up in a rubber-hose attack.

There’s overlap between the three. A duress password temporarily limits what’s stored on a device, and losing a decryption key is more or less the same as instantly wiping encrypted data to reduce what you have to offer. All come down to having less data to give when coerced into giving what you have. Operating systems should also obey this principle by storing as little offline data as possible, and providing duress safeguards for what must be stored.

Windows Recall captures an amount of offline telemetry comparable to parental-control apps often used to control human trafficking victims: the data encompass everything potential victims do on their machines, without any duress protections. Presenting such a feature as opt-out seems like it’s almost designed to hurt victims.

The decision-makers behind features like Recall, or invasive child-monitoring spyware, have likely never experienced this type of abuse. Or perhaps they are the abusive party at home.
