“Level-Setting Heading Levels”
https://adrianroselli.com/2024/05/level-setting-heading-levels.html
TL;DR: Avoid setting heading levels greater than six (6). This applies whether using `aria-level` or the proposed `headingstart` HTML attribute. Use HTML `<h#>` elements whenever possible.

“We use hurzpurz 72 and snomdrum 98 to build this website really fast. It was easy to work with and what a great site did we relaunch!!”
“But it’s not accessible, is it?”
“…”
Every inaccessible relaunch is a missed opportunity. Inaccessible relaunches must stop. Now.

I honestly enjoy writing good, descriptive alt text. Once you get used to it, it's no longer a chore, rather a fun exercise.
It gives you an opportunity to focus on the image you're sharing, sometimes revealing details you might miss.
It's a great writing challenge as well.
And it's just the right thing to do to help folks who rely on it.
…“Sorry, we couldn’t spend any of our ridiculous market over-valuation on a decent web designer, or on a developer who had any care or clue about keyboard accessibility, we were too busy stealing your content and screwing your future.
And by using Tailwind to implement crappy design patterns, we have even more time to do that. Another win for us”

There seems to be a bug in newer versions of either Chromium or Electron, which makes it announce an app running under it to be in English. The consequence, VoiceOver on the Mac speaks everything in English, even if the UI is clearly in German, and the app itself recognizes that my system locale is set to German. Two apps that are affected by it are Signal and Skype. And guess what, many of the contacts on there chat with me in German, which makes reading their messages rather difficult. I really wish Signal would port their iPad app to the Mac instead of throwing that stupid web app at us Mac Silicon users. The dependency on at least two different beasts under the hood of the UI which is the reality of Electron apps, is just an accessibility nightmare through and through.

I just joined the #Robius matrix chat, and gave a link to my toot above.

Who knows.. maybe the wheel need not be reinvented again, right? And they are open to #AccessKit.
Btw, thank you for your talk yesterday. I really liked it, it was a great presentation.

Hi @matt 👋
Yesterday in #LibrePlanet chat I named the #Makepad project, a real adorable 😍 effort that's still lacking on the #a11y side, i.e. could do with some #AccessKit on board.
Today I found out that Makepad is apparently part of a #Rust appdev effort, called #Robius. Another project here is #Dioxus.. also in for @accesskit #accessiblity support.. maybe. 🤔
Robius looks like a very loose conglomeration of independent projects. Maybe AccessKit is even a fit to it?

Does anyone have experience with any of the following e-ticketing/customer service platforms?
Futura,
Zendesk or similar,
Shopify Plus.
If so, can you speak to the accessibility of these platforms? What should I be aware of, what is and isn't possible?
Thanks in advance.

@thunderbird there is no option to show avatars in the message list, right? #thunderbird
Especially with a lot of messages per day, the messages list is just noise to me. Avatars would be great to reduce cognitive overhead. #ux #a11y

Was just reminded that you can use *no* headings in a web page and automated tests will pass you for WCAG compliance.
You can't use the wrong heading structure if you use no headings at all! Automated tests can't tell where the structure needs to be broken up into sections because they would have to understand the nature of the content. #a11y

Why are my live regions not working? by @patrick_h_lauke
"Live regions have a reputation for being "flaky" and inconsistent. While this can be attributed in part to shortcomings in current implementations, the problem can also be caused by developers misunderstanding how live regions are intended to work."

A few extra seconds of your time it takes to add a good image description can really improve someone's day.
"To a totally blind person like me it means a lot to have a picture in my mind of your images, especially the animal pics."
"I don't know what it is, but as a blind user it's making me emotional to be able to actually interact with content."

#SocialCoop has been discussing whether to disable images on May 16 and October 10 for #WorldSightDay, as suggested here https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/112275637561897034.

I would like to hear perspectives from people with visual impairments on whether this kind of action is helpful.

Just rebooted and I’m up and running with Fedora Silverblue 40.
(Just tried reinstalling mozilla-openh264 – so videos work in Firefox – but it failed with the same error. Not a big deal, I’m using @Vivaldi as my main browser these days anyway and I guess the Fedora folks will fix this in time.)
More importantly, I wonder if the screen reader has been fixed yet. (Yes, Fedora ships with a broken screen reader.)

Just checked and yes, the screen reader is still broken in Fedora 40. (Cannot be controlled; keyboard shortcuts/modifier key doesn’t work.)
So this is yet another release where the screen reader is broken by default.
It’s amazing to me that this is not a showstopper.
