Accessibility-focused Mastodon question. I’m currently using the Enafore web client and generally like it. I’ve been seeing some chatter about FastSM, and I’m curious how it compares in real use. Has anyone here used Enafore and then switched to FastSM? If so, how is it with a screen reader, and what feels different or better (or worse)? One of the notable aspects of #Mastodon is that even when discussing highly controversial topics -- with rare exceptions -- it's possible to get up in the morning, check your replies, and see a completely civil discussion. Try that on most social media. Good luck.

Many are probably familiar with how unfriendly the #Fediverse / #Mastodon is to non-white cultures.

Let's assume that I follow these #hashtags: #unix, #bsd, #netbsd etc. Then for the sake of argument I filter #freebsd. Now if a #toot contains the hashtags #netbsd and #freebsd should I see it in my timeline or not see it? Is there a #mastodon rule or is it a #client-rule?
About Bluesky and federation: Edit: There might be some mistakes, and my information could be outdated, but the point still stands - Bluesky wasn't built on 100% federation from the start.
I've been wondering about Bluesky's decentralization again. I can't think of any reason why I'd want to self-host Bluesky in its current form. I cannot 100% self host "my own Bluesky".
Their main selling points for building their own protocol were easier migration and better discoverability, but right now there's no simple way to migrate my Bluesky account to my own instance. And hosting the centralized parts yourself isn't really possible, or if it were, not affordable, they haven't made that feasible, by design, it seems.
Even if you self-host a PDS, Bluesky's Relay only indexes up to 10 accounts from it. You can run more, but they won't federate, the central infrastructure decides what gets seen. They control this (source: docs.bsky.app/blog/self-host-f….). You can self-host a PDS (Personal Data Server), but you still depend on Bluesky's centralized Relay and AppView. There's no production-ready alternative infrastructure from what I gather.
It feels like I'd be renting a room in a hotel that someone else is running anyway, when I want my own hotel.
If Mastodon gGmbH vanishes tomorrow, my instance keeps running and federating with everyone else. If Bluesky PBC vanishes, the ecosystem would need to scramble to stand up replacement infrastructure that doesn't really exist yet.
ATProto keeps getting evaluated on its promises while other systems get evaluated on their merits. The "portability" selling point depends on infrastructure that isn't mature enough to actually catch you if Bluesky falls.
I trust W3C, the builders and fathers of the World Wide Web, ActivityPub and the Fediverse.
Hallo allerseits, ich finde die Funktion nicht, wie ich Alternativtext für Bilder (in Posts) in friendica [Server loma.nl] eingeben kann.
In der Galerie geht das ueber das entsprechende Eingabefeld (wie bereits erwaehnt). Leider ist das noch nicht direkt beim hochladen wahrend dem Erstellen eines Beitrags als Optionfeld beim hochladen der Fall. Das bedeutet unter anderem das wenn ein ALTtext bei der Textbearbeitung, wie weiter unten beschrieben, eingefuegt wird dieser Text gleichzeitig auch in die Galerie auftaucht.
Allgemein ist anzumerken das im Gegensatz zu #mastodon #friendica eine wesentlich bessere Bildergalerie besitzt. Ebenso das diese eigentlich noch nie wirklich ueberarbeitet wurde, das bedeutet unter anderem das die ALTtext Initiative fuer #barriereFreiheit auch nicht eingearbeitet wurde.
Angesichts dieser Umstaende ergibt sich folgende best practice zum erstellen von Beitraegen und Antworten: (Bearbeitung vom Desktop aus)
Oeffne zwei Fenster, eines mit dem zu bearbeitenden Text, ein weiteres fuer die Bildergalerie.
Waehrend der Text bearbeitet wird werden im zweiten Fenster (Reiter) ueber die Fotogalerie die Bilder direkt in die entsprechenden Bilderkategorien hochgeladen.
In einem zweiten Schritt wird ein drittes Fenster geoffnet in dem die Fotogalerie zu sehen ist. * nach hochladen eines Bildes muss dieses Fenster aktualisiert werden um die neuen Bilder anzuzeigen.
Oeffnen des neuen Bildes in einem neuen Fenster.
Auswahl der Editierfunktion des neuen Bildes in dem Bildfenster.
Einfuegen des ALTtextes in dem Bildbeschreibungsfenster.
Einfuegen der hashtags fuer das betreffende Bild.
(Sicherheits)Ueberpruefung der Zugriffsberechtigungen fuer das betreffende Bild
Einfuegen des neuen Bildes in dem Themen- oder Antworttext ueber die Bildereinfuegen aus Bildergalerie Option * aktuell werden Bilder am Endes des Textfeldes eingefuegt. Bei mehreren Bildern erscheint es praktisch erste den gesamten Text zu erstellen und alle entsprechende Bilder zu bearbeiten, dann alle Bilder auf ein mal nach einander einzufuegen und dann die Bilder in den Text einzuordnen.
Die Textfelder der Bildergalerie sind in der Ansicht sehr begrenzt. Bei laengeren Bildbeschreibungen empfiehlt es sich die Texte extern zu erstellen. * Eine weitere Option ist den Text noch einmal im Textbearbeitungsfeld des Artikels mit einem Rechtschreibkorrektor zu ueberpruefen. Der bbCode macht dies allerdings sehr unuebersichtlich.

I’m getting a ton of spam on Mastodon. On the Jabber/XMPP side of things, we are doing a lot behind the scenes to combat it that regular users might not even notice.
I hope the people behind the scenes of Mastodon are working on similar things.

Any #gotosocial user know how I can completely remove a user from the database and have it refetch the user's details or something like that. I am trying to follow someone who I think deleted and recreated there account on the same #Mastodon instance, when I try to follow said person again it says, error 404, target not found.

I went on a blocking spree today. I was scrolling through the Silent Sunday posts and blocked folks who routinely post images with no alt text. It's so frustrating to see a great image and no alt text, and I just don't need that annoyance.
But I was pleased to note that such folks were a distinct minority. Yay for everyone using alt text!

@Luis Carlos @Andre Louis At least loops accounts can be followed from #mastodon and #friendica. The web version is not particularly well designed in terms of screen reader #accessibility. Controls such as link to the profile, buttons for reply, boost and similar. Not to mention video controls such as play button. All of these are not clearly labelled. CC @dansup
