Why should it take @sovtechfund to fund accessibility work on the Linux distribution of a multi-billion-dollar corporation like IBM? Why the fuck isnāt IBM paying for it?
I love that a multi-billion-dollar corporation like RedHat/IBM can ship an operating system with a broken screen reader in 2024 (itās not just them, itās true for basically every major Linux distribution today) and, when you point it out, the response is āitās no oneās faultā¦ itās all free labourā¦ itās FOSS, manā. And then: oh, and this charity is paying for one person to work on accessibility support to be implemented nowā¦ Anyone else see how fucked up that is?
65% of vision impaired people are over 50 years of age, despite making up only 20% of the world's population.
Accessible technology benefits everyone. As we age vision impairment becomes more likely. NVDA's free and open-source technology ensures no one is unfairly disadvantaged because of their vision.

Hey Fedi! A thought experiment:
How much would it cost in HW and bandwidth to replicate the original Google search? (Just crawl, index, search the index, display results. Only text in v1.)
I suspect it wouldn't be too expensive.
We could implement this, slap some collective QA on top of it, crowdfund the servers.

The organizers of @pycon have given community organizers a massive gift š
Let's not squander it!
A *sold out* #PyConUS 2024 proved that even large events can prioritize safety and inclusion for caregivers and immunocompromised people by way of requiring masks, and gathering venue data to calibrate their policy from year-to-year. Smaller events have proven it's possible at that scale, too.
Now is the time for at least one other large event to step up.
Who will it be? š

Just spent today at work with Linux. Fedora's Mate spin still works well generally, and Orca is much more stable. And, according to Orca, the system never even ran over about 3 of the 16 GB of RAM on that Intel NUC. I set up Emacs and Emacspeak, Firefox, Bitwarden, VS Code, and never even took my laptop out of the bag. Of course, I really miss a lot of NVDA addons, like the OpenAI one, sounds for entering browse and focus modes, and the Thunderbird addon most of all. But I was able to log into, and use, Salesforce and Google Sheets. So now when I get a good workflow with Markdown and such, I think I'll just about, maybe, be able to start using it more. Packages are all up-to-date, Orca will alwasy be current, and hopefully I can one day move to a desktop environment with a proper notification center! Oh, and I'll have to see if Pidgin still takes up more RAM the more I use it.
Note that I still wouldn't expect a regular computer user to get into Linux, as far as setting it up. But, honestly, having the #BTSpeak out on the market makes me hope that more power users and programmers will hammer Linux into more of a shape that blind people can be at home with.
