I think it boils down to who Friendica wants to attract as users on the platform.
To sharpen the pen a bit, there are two groups:
- The GenX's and boomers of Facebook (so, the average "mom and dad" users)
- Those who can set up a Nextcloud instance and have their pictures hosted there
The second group is the people that are already here. The first group is largely not.
My motivation for this suggestion is that many people have their lives documented on Facebook (well, since 2007/2009 or so). They would like to take that with them, if they leave. Asking them to download their photos to their PCs or host them somewhere else is often not a viable solution.
Other platforms in the #fediverse have this Import feature. There is one on Pixelfed (which I used to drop Instagram completely) and the new Nolto business network has a LinkedIn import feature. Granted, the LinkedIn import is not large (bytesize-wise), but the Instagram import from Pixelfed certainly is.
I acknowledge that it requires storage on the individual servers, but - as on Pixelfed - it should be a feature that could be enabled/disabled by admins, if there was a wish to support this.
Believe me, I really love Friendica. I think it is the best alternative to Facebook a the moment, but ... honestly ... it can be a hard sell when trying to convince Facebook-users to make the switch.
