News for developers! As a result of some awesome cross-project collaboration, Flathub now has improved tooling to make license compliance easier for you.

tl;dr app developers, ensure you’re using up-to-date runtimes and verify that licenses and copyright notices are properly included; distros, ensure your OS images have been built with updated runtimes from Flathub.

Great Intelligence2 episode with @pluralistic

open.spotify.com/episode/2DoEu…

I loved his call for #DigitalSovereignty. It is great how #FOSS provides countries to provide a viable alternative. Interoperability & being able to reverse engineer the products is key.

open.spotify.com/episode/2DoEu…

This would do so much for innovation, too. The whole focus on printer ink is such a great example, as is the nursing one. Monopolies are anti-capitalist & anti-innovation. Lots I hadn't considered for #privacy

Markdown support is coming to #LibreOffice! And a new dialog to edit table styles, Python and BASIC code auto-completion, Rust UNO language bindings, and more - all thanks to participants in the Google Summer of Code: blog.documentfoundation.org/bl… #foss #OpenSource

(2/3) For those curious about the technical side: we are using #MkDocs to build the website inside #WoodpeckerCI on #Codeberg and push the resulting HTML to #Grebedoc.

We want to thank all the developers of these tools and we want to thank @Codeberg and @whitequark for the hosting of code and website.

As always in this #FOSS world: we build on the work of others to get much further much faster than we could have gone alone and we are so grateful for the FOSS community for making this possible!

Small improvements can make a big difference. Our next major update to #LibreOffice (due early next year) will show page ranges under headings in the Navigator. Find out what else the developer and QA communities are working on: qa.blog.documentfoundation.org… #foss #OpenSource

"Today, another mad dictator is threatening the world's infrastructure. For the rest of the world to escape dictators' demands, they will have to accelerate their independence from American tech – not just Russian gas."

As you might have come to expect and astute as ever, @pluralistic laying down the facts on American tech subservience.

The only remaining part of my computing world that is not yet on Linux is my audio/music production work. Formulating a plan to try and make a move there, too.

Would love to connect up with anyone doing this seriously on Linux. I'm totally okay with re-tooling a bunch of my software stack, but I'm trying to figure out a good, solid audio interface that will work well for serious use under Linux.

Microsoft Office 2016 and Office 2019 are no longer receiving software updates, technical support, or bug and security fixes.

Consider migrating to LibreOffice.

Microsoft recommends migrating to a Microsoft 365 subscription.

LibreOffice supports the features that a majority of users need for free.

Hab deinen Beitrag zwecks Unterstützung geteilt, vielleicht bringts ja was...

I've been thinking about creators and distributors. picture a woodworker who crafts a perfectly balanced, minimalist chair. a furniture store loves it and starts selling it. but, to "match their brand", the store paints every chair bright green

customers see a green chair. they don't know the store painted it. they just assume the original artisan loves making bright green chairs. the creator's original intent and aesthetic are completely lost in translation, and their reputation is now tied to a choice made by someone else

this happens so often in FOSS. upstream developers create the "wooden chair", and downstream distros often paint it "green". there's nothing inherently wrong with that, but it creates a gap where users blame the artisan for the paint job. it makes you think about where creative ownership truly lies

Help wanted, please!

If you have *first hand experience* of improving the diversity of a governance board of (currently all men) volunteers, I'd love to hear how you went about it, or resources which helped you, please.

What did you find helped make the role more attractive to a wider range of applicants to join?

(This is in the context of a Free software project, but broader contexts are welcome.)

Itching to try GNOME 49 today? Developers and curious testers can try GNOME OS in a virtual machine or bare metal:

Just remember that GNOME OS itself is considered pre-release software; bad things may happen if you use it in production. Happy testing!
