migrating from #WhatsApp to another centralized platform is not a real solution, that's why we are here in the #Fediverse and not in #BlueSky

The family of #deltachat apps uses #chatmail servers as ephemeral message transports that know nothing and forget everything: Servers don't store group metadata or cryptographic identities and delete messages after download by default. In effect, a 30EUR/month #chatmail server with 10K's of active users hums along with 2% IO and CPU pressure, 1GB RAM and negligible disk usage. No Pro-version or Kubernetes needed to scale ;)
I love open source, and I want young people to know there’s a career path outside of #FAANG. Open source can be financially sustainable—it just gets super hard if one of your key goals is making your investors even richer. #Conversations_im is about the same age as #Matrix. I never took VC funding, and I’m doing fine.

Message order in Matrix: right now, we are deliberately inconsistent, artificialworlds.net/blog/2024…, by @andybalaam.
Excellent article explaining different events orderings in Matrix, the impact and a possible solution.
Upcoming events:
We'll give two talks at #FOSSDEM about #chatmail and #deltachat in the modern email devroom, on Saturday late afternoon: fosdem.org/2025/schedule/track…
The friday before, we'll probably also appear and talk about about #webxdc at the #Matrix barcamp.
Sunday morning, our friends from @n0iroh namely @flub, will give a talk about the P2P-iroh network architecture fosdem.org/2025/schedule/event…
Otherwise, you'll find us mostly around #OFFDEM for chatting and more ad-hoc sessions.
The #medium is the #message

In an increasingly volatile world, governments turn to Element and Matrix
Governments need digitally sovereign, secure and interoperable communications. The demand for Matrix is palpable.Steve Loynes (Element Blog)
Following the example of GitLab and other VC-funded open source companies, @element goes 'open source almost everything' with "Synapse Pro";
"Synapse itself remains open source, and Element will continue to develop it proactively, just as it has for the last 10 years ... Available under a commercial license, Synapse Pro will help fund and accelerate the continued open source development of Synapse for the benefit of all of Matrix."

Synapse Pro slashes costs for running nation-scale Matrix deployments
Synapse Pro is Element’s best practice Matrix homeserver. It transforms the performance and economics of huge public sector deployments.Steve Loynes (Element Blog)
Regarding Matrix, a workaround has been implemented until webpush is supported by their specifications. Element-X has a patch going on to fix the default gateway (but Schildinext works), all other clients already supporting UnifiedPush should work
Dear friends of the BSD Cafe,
As 2024 comes to an end, it’s time to reflect on what we’ve built together during the first full year of life for BSD Cafe. Launched on 20 July 2023, this project has grown far beyond what I could have imagined. While I haven’t tracked full uptime data, I can confidently say that the downtime was less than 30 minutes overall - even though the main VM hosting our services moved multiple times (including a switch from a Proxmox hypervisor to bhyve on FreeBSD, for the sake of alignment with our mission). In a world filled with over-engineered HA systems, we’ve outperformed many “big-name” cloud providers. Not bad for a community project, right?
For me, this has been an incredible journey. The users here are not just participants - they’re collaborators, and their positivity has been inspiring. The content shared and created at BSD Cafe has been valuable not only to the BSD community but beyond. What truly sets BSD Cafe apart is the openness for dialogue and exchange. Whether it’s social media posts, Matrix discussions, repositories in our brew, or RSS feeds, people seem to genuinely appreciate what we create and the conversations we foster.
BSD Cafe is a journey - one that grows, evolves, and continues. Our goal isn’t endless growth (we’re a community, not a business) but rather to maintain a welcoming, inclusive space where everyone feels a sense of positivity and belonging. For me, opening any service with “bsd.cafe” in the domain brings joy and pride. That’s the spirit I’ve tried to convey, and I hope it resonates with all of you, whether you’re active BSD Cafe users or friends of the community.
Promoting self-hosting and #OwnYourData has, as a side effect, inspired some users to “go solo” with their own setups. But even then, they remain part of BSD Cafe - in spirit, in purpose, and in connection.
Here’s a look at what we’ve achieved together this year:
- mastodon.bsd.cafe: 370 total users
Active in the past month: 207
Active in the past six months: 286
- snac.bsd.cafe: 14 total users
Active in the past month: 7
- blendit.bsd.cafe: 61 registered users
- matrix.bsd.cafe: 23 users
- brew.bsd.cafe: 29 users - 80 repositories
- freshrss.bsd.cafe: 25 users
- miniflux.bsd.cafe: 11 users
- press.bsd.cafe: 9 users
- myip.bsd.cafe: Constantly used by various users
- wiki.bsd.cafe: Could use a bit more love and content, but it fulfills its role as a functional homepage.
- tube.bsd.cafe: Still in testing - Peertube 7.0 update is on the way.
For detailed stats from our reverse proxy and general router (excluding media services, which generate most traffic but are handled via caching reverse proxies), you can check here - updated hourly: netstats.bsd.cafe
The journey of BSD Cafe continues, and I look forward to seeing where 2025 will take us. Together, we’ve built something special - something driven by passion, shared purpose, and a little bit of the BSD magic that makes all of this possible.
Here’s to a new year full of joy, serenity, and connection. Thank you for being part of this adventure.
Wishing you all a fantastic 2025 - and THANK YOU!
Stefano

So, you're using decentralized non-corporate-owned social media because you don't want your online identity and activity tracked and held by some corporation, and even possibly a government-influenced owner (TikTok?).
I've opened an #XMPP (#Jabber) messaging server, which is based on the same principles as whatever application you are reading this on. XMPP is completely decentralized, open source, free, and volunteer run.
Also, neither member identity nor messages are stored on the server. There is no centralized control over the network. You sign up by first choosing a server. Your ID looks like an ActivityPub ID (example: support@chat.between-us.online).
Besides end-to-end message encryption, there's optional #OMEMO on-device encryption. No centralized messaging app (other than Signal) offers an encryption option this strong. There's video calling, file transfer, and both public and private chat rooms/groups. There are many messaging applications available for all operating systems.
You provide no personally identifiable information when you sign up, not even an email address. You only pick your ID and provide a password (which cannot be changed or recovered as the server does not keep identity information, so don't lose it and be sure it can't be guessed). If you delete your account, through the messaging app, there is no record of your account having existed on the server.
If interested, you can sign up on the messaging application (use chat.between-us.online as the server) or via the website at between-us.online, which also provides additional information about XMPP and how to use it.
A note about #Matrix. Don't @ me about Matrix. This message is only to announce an XMPP (Jabber) server option. I am not advocating XMPP over Matrix. I use Matrix as well. It ticks all the same boxes. This is just an announcement about an XMPP server.

Synapse 1.120.2 was just released with several security fixes: github.com/element-hq/synapse/…
You should really update now and while the last 2 CVEs say, they were fixed on 1.106, to my knowledge that is only true if you enabled authenticated media, which only became the default in 1.120, so you really want to update even for those or at least update your config.
Thank you! :)

Oha, das ist provokativ: Dieser Blogartikel sagt:
- Nutzt kein #PGP / #GPG
- Nutzt kein #XMPP + OMEMO
- Nutzt kein #Matrix (im Sinne: verlasst euch nicht auf die Verschlüsselung)
- E-Mails verschlüsseln ist sinnlos

Work on Sliding Sync – which provides a significantly faster and more scalable sync experience in Matrix clients – has moved to focus on native support, and away from the proxy.
The Sliding Sync Proxy on the Matrix.org homeserver will be decommissioned on November 21st.

I’ve been on Fedi for a year now and have fallen in love with the platform, so here’s my introduction! I studied computer science with a focus on RTOS and FP/PL, but I’m about to start my final semester of law school. I’ll be practicing at a boutique firm that primarily handles IP cases once I’m barred. I foilboard and I play way too many rhythm games in and out of the arcade.
I contribute to open source projects where I can, and I write up my experience in my digital garden which I’ve been maintaining for over a year now. It’s also a good place to find usage tips for projects/tools that you might want to use.
My passion for tech also includes privacy, and I’m an advocate for minimizing your digital footprint. GenAI is a scam and its purveyors are causing real harm while they sell it as hard as they can.

With #matrix and oidc I was thinking about offering an official FluffyChat server. It would have some benefits, right? I could have more control over the UX and would be kore independent. On the other hand it would require a lot of work and eval a public legal identity with either an expensive impressum service or publishing my physical address. Also a lot of legal paperwork.
So I came up with a new idea. A new login UX flow where the user picks the homeserver from a trustworthy list
