I'm sorry for the Fosstodon drama. Fosstodon was my second fedi server and there I had a lot of FOSS fun: nice people, good moderators, good topics. I left when my radicalized vision of how world was changing, also thanks to digital/software/tech stuff/hype, became too much abstracted from the "yes but huh, I do not care, any foss is good and that's all" vibe of the instance. But hey, it was me.

The Fosstodon story is another example of how our expectations of fedi aren't aligned with reality. It's not a matter of moderators, server policies, who's federated with whom. It's simply that when a group of people grows beyond a certain number (I think it's in the hundreds not in the thousands), more drama ensues and more often jerks prevail.

In short: it's not the medium, it's the people. Or people dynamics, if you want to feel less harsh. Hidden behind their keyboards, people are jerks when they have the chance. Every bar, getting bigger and bigger, is on the verge to become a jerks bar and maybe then a nazi bar. It just needs someone to become a catalyst for stupidity.

The difference between fedi and corpo social networks is that fedi doesn't want drama: it's divisive and burns moderators out. Corpo socials crave drama because it's engagement. And there are no moderators or nice corpo people to protect.

That's why any debate about "how can fedi win?" makes no sense, for me. If winning is copying the techbros and aiming to get bigger, we have ample proof that bigger instances will gradually become a mess of spam, jerks, bots, misinfo and drama and then - if below a critical self-sustainable mass - collapse. Instances even bigger, will stay the mess they've become. Thinking "oh but this time it's different, we're different" is naive.

In real life, we're praising the beauty of local communities and of communities of interest, and the value of real interactions in smaller groups. This is also a value fedi should underline: bigger is not better, smaller has much more appeal. But, again, it's me.

Linux communities beware of #PewDiePie fans

Regardless of PewDiePie’s personal #politics (which clearly, at the very least are problematic), it is fairly well known by anyone who has been following him for any number of years that the vast majority of his fan base are enthusiastic fascists.

Now #PewDiePie , who’s content centers around PC gaming and Windows, has decided to switch to #Linux and published a video encouraging his followers to do the same. This means a very large number of his #fascist fan base is going to be switching to Linux.

Now many Linux communities are going to be forced to more explicitly choose their politics. Like the parable of the Nazi bar, if the community remains politically neutral, it will become fascist in short order.

A few things to be wary of:

• People asking you not to be “too political” or to “focus on the technology, not the politics” is a classic and highly effective fascist ruse to get moderators to lighten up on fascist elements posting in their community.
• People complaining about free speech rights. The #Internet and the #Fediverse is already a domain where people can speak freely about their politics by running their own server and building their own community with few to no government constraints. You don’t need to compromise on whether fascists have the right to free speech in your community.
• Arguments over your code of conduct (CC) and “safe spaces.” Keep them up-to-date. Research other people’s CCs, learn about the history of why these CCs came to be, learn about what the function of each clause of the code is included and phrased the way it is. These were usually designed to make explicit the fact that a community wants to be a safe space where underprivileged people can feel comfortable expressing themselves, and it is very easy to make people afraid to express themselves. Fascists understand these CCs and the concept of “safe spaces” were explicitly designed to exclude them, and often attack these ideas.

Bluesky is cancelling accounts when foreign governments ask them to, and Threads is doing adverts soon.

The thing to understand about the corporate public messaging systems is that they do not exist to let you publish or to talk to people. That is not the point of them. That's at best just the bait laid to lure you into their trap.

They exist to make money for the shareholders. That's why Threads exists, that's why Blockchain Inc invested to keep Bluesky running.

Only one network exists in order to let people communicate as the point and reason for it's existence. Only one network has no shareholders and no owners.

Only one is fighting for the user, not the shareholder.

Возможно, вы грустите из-за того, что lor.sh закрывается.

Но вообще, у этого есть и плюсы.

Например, некоторые его обитатели побежали искать себе варианты для селфхоста. Естественно, как это обычно бывает, незамутнённый взгляд под непривычным углом быстро находит проблемы.

Поэтому, например, @rayslava вон скоро будет чинить плагин для Emacs под Mitra, а мы с @iliazeus уже нашли несколько проблем в GoToSocial и одном веб-клиенте для него и Mastodon.

Так что может lor.sh летом и закроется, но тем самым даст некоторый толчок нашей федеративной экосистеме стать лучше.

Так что налейте мне полстакана да выпьем за лорш и людей, которые там собрались 🍻

Wahrscheinlich ist es den wenigsten hier aufgefallen, dass ich in der letzten Woche recht still im #Fediverse war. Ursache war ein unachtsamer Autofahrer, der mich letzte Woche bei seinem Linksabiegen vom #Fahrrad geschossen hat. Resultat sind zwei gebrochene Arme und ein Bruch am Halswirbel.

I could use your help. If you could boost this, I would appreciate it. If you see this and favorite it, I will follow you if your interests seem to align with mine.

I'm not asking for follows... rather I'm asking for you to help me shout out into the ether that I'M looking for people to follow. My main interests are going to be hashtagged below.

By the way, the way hashtags work here is that currently, if I search, I only see what my server is already knows about... which would mean just the folks I follow, since I'm a single-user instance. Not very helpful 😂

#OpenStreetMap hat ein ähnliches Problem wie #Mastodon / #Fediverse aus Sicht des naiven Users: Die Pluralität der Server.

Zwar gibt es OpenStreetMap.org als Anlaufstelle, aber dann gibt's zig Websites und Apps, die sogar besser sind, aber wie finde ich die jetzt?

Man weiß nicht, wohin.

Ich habe vergessen, eine Buchmarke zu setzen. Da gab's doch mal so eine Variante mit Metadaten-Ansicht links in so einer Sidebar, die war so mehr wie Google Maps.

I'm micr0, creator of @altbot, the open-source bot that helps generate alt-text for images on the Fediverse to make content more accessible.

What's New in 2.1?

After successfully moving image processing to local hardware with version 2.0, I've now brought video processing capability back - but with a major privacy upgrade! Altbot can now generate descriptions for videos completely locally and privately without sending content to Google or any other third-party services.

Important note: Currently, video processing is visual-only and doesn't include audio transcription. The audio processing Google was doing was some serious black magic fuckery that isn't possible to replicate locally with current technologies. But the visual descriptions are excellent and totally private!

With this update:

• All processing happens locally with zero data retention
• Complete privacy for all content
• No data used for training models
• Videos processed with the same privacy standards as images

I've also maintained Altbot's focus on energy efficiency - while video processing naturally requires more resources than images, I've implemented it to be as efficient as possible, keeping power consumption to a minimum while still delivering great results.
