@quanin

After exploring #R2E, I've decided it might not be the best fit for my needs. Here's why:

1. R2E doesn't support #Inoreader's #OPML format, requiring manual feed addition.
2. I realized I have many feeds and need a more comprehensive solution.

I'm now considering #Miniflux, which can manage #RSS feeds, #Podcasts, and #YouTube subscriptions in one place.

Until I get my #RaspberryPi for Christmas, I'm weighing two options:
1. Self-host Miniflux on my #Windows PC using #Docker
2. Use their $15/year hosted plan temporarily

Fellow #techies, especially those interested in #accessibility and #SelfHosting: What would you recommend? Your insights would be greatly appreciated!

I’ve been on Fedi for a year now and have fallen in love with the platform, so here’s my introduction! I studied computer science with a focus on RTOS and FP/PL, but I’m about to start my final semester of law school. I’ll be practicing at a boutique firm that primarily handles IP cases once I’m barred. I foilboard and I play way too many rhythm games in and out of the arcade.

I contribute to open source projects where I can, and I write up my experience in my digital garden which I’ve been maintaining for over a year now. It’s also a good place to find usage tips for projects/tools that you might want to use.

My passion for tech also includes privacy, and I’m an advocate for minimizing your digital footprint. GenAI is a scam and its purveyors are causing real harm while they sell it as hard as they can.

A question for selfhosters: What do you consider the best option for a self hosted cloud drive?

I've deployed owncloud some time ago. But I don't know whether it is currently the best choice or not. Nextcloud? Any other?

A small compendium of the Fediverse platforms I use/know well.

In the past few days, I revisited some of my old Fediverse instances since some friends asked me to help them set up a new one. I also took the chance to perform maintenance on some leftover instances. Here's my experience:

Akkoma: My oldest instance still running, opened in 2022. It was offline for a few months (3/4). I updated everything to the latest version and restarted it. I’m not sure why, but it’s extremely slow, with a heavy load on Postgres and many queries just to open the main page. I like Akkoma - I'll investigate further.

GoToSocial: I updated a friend's instance - GoToSocial itself was up-to-date, but the underlying system wasn’t. I noticed that once it exceeds 2000 followings, it becomes a bit slow. The database is PostgreSQL, but that's not the issue. The GoToSocial process becomes somewhat heavy on the VPS. Still, it's very usable and a software with great potential, in my opinion. The Mastodon API is implemented quite well and works with the major software.

Mitra: It seems well-built. The person had around 1000 followers and followings on a Mastodon account, which they moved from a large instance. No speed issues, though sending a message makes the server “heavy” for a bit, but it’s temporary. The Mastodon API is partially implemented, but the software is advancing quickly, and I find its native interface quite pleasant.

Snac2: I've always had a soft spot for Snac2. The lack of a database and some design choices make it an excellent solution for small instances. For example, sending posts to all known instances increases visibility and interaction. Its basic, JavaScript-free interface is very clear, though it might not be the best for those used to Mastodon. But the Mastodon API is improving version by version, and I think the developer is doing an excellent job. It struggles a bit with larger numbers, but that's due to the underlying file system, not the software itself. If "move" support (both in and out) were added, I would recommend it to anyone starting self-hosting for single-user or small community instances because "move" is one of the options that gives the most freedom in Fediverse software.

Mastodon: My “old” personal instance was stuck at version 4.1.x and had been offline for a few months. I updated the FreeBSD Jail and upgraded Mastodon to 4.2.12 and then to 4.3.0-beta1. No issues. I also helped a friend (who had an old Pleroma-based instance they barely used) migrate. This user has around 5000 followers and followings - Mastodon is running on FreeBSD on a VPS (arm64) for just over 3 euros a month, with no significant issues (apart from media storage, but that's not Mastodon’s fault). Mastodon is sometimes said to be heavy, and that's partly true, but its modularity ensures that even in cases of overload, queues may slow down, but navigation and the local timeline remain reasonably fast. I think this is a good thing for any larger-scale use of an instance.

In short, I think things are moving in the right direction, and the software is evolving nicely. Well done, devs!

New blogpost: Thunderbird, Nextcloud, calendar invitations, and unwanted html email with non-working 'confirm acceptance' links

Last week, someone kindly flagged a problem with how I'd got calendar invitations set up, and it was annoying me.

So, over the weekend, I fixed it :)

ahoj, fediverse!

I'm doing a little experiment #selfhosting a single-user instance

I'm also @asl

Not sure what account I will ultimately roll with, but just following everyone in both places to stress test if the potato hosting this can handle federation 😅

Impressive, since switching from gitlab-ci to earthly, pipeline runs with container builds went from >20 minutes down to 3-8 minutes.

What a little bit of better caching can do for you.

It's no longer fully self-hosted, but earthly is trivial to self-host if I want to bother at some point.

git.shivering-isles.com/shiver…

And given earthly hands out 6000 CI minutes for free, it actually cuts cost compared to starting a VM on hetzner or locally.

@molly0xfff's post on migrating from Substack by self hosting is a master piece in clear communication. This is how you cover a complex issue without glossing over details due to hindsight while also not making the topic sound more daunting. A great example of building stairs and elevators after you've climbed instead of pulling the ladder. Highly recommend reading even if you're not in the newsletter sending game.

@ErcanErdemArdal Yes, credentials are stored server side with slidge. Although, just to clarify, I am not administrating a public slidge instance. Slidge is a software meant to be installed by XMPP server admins. #selfhosting an #XMPP server is relatively easy and cheap, and that's the option I recommend to anyone that wants to try slidge. Maybe some XMPP servers admins will propose this to their users one day, but right now, all slidge users that I know of are self-hosters.

I was working on Tweetormator, a open source self-hosted solution to tweet scheduling, engagement analysis and evergreen♻️ tweets but that feels dead in the water now.

Or perhaps I could convert it to Tootormator? I'll need to look into the Mastodon API.

Lemme do another #introduction now that my fediHome is finalised.

Hi. I am @fyrfli@bkgrdclrshm.link also known as @fyrfli@mastodon.coffe.

I am a massive tinkerer and thinkerer ... to a fault. I am re-learning how to build web stuff because the last time I did any of that was back when Geocities was still a thing. (yeah, yeah .. I am dating myself).

I am obsessed with #CSS#FOSS#Debian#SelfHosting#Photography ... and I am "mom" to an American Eskimo or #Eskie (known as a MittelSpitz in the rest of the world), and a "red" Siberian #Husky. I am also an avid #Gamer currently unable to resist a good #RemnantsFromTheAshes session (and those can last all day if I am not careful). I also play #ARK and #WoW.

I hail from Kingston, #Jamaica and and am married with no children.

Since it has been a increase of users lately, I'll follow the stream and #introduce myself 🙂 Better late than never.

My real name is Erik and I live in Sweden. Airikr is the old name of Erik from medieval Sweden.

My main interests are #programming, #photography, #cycling, #astronomy, #exploration, and #history.

I am a big fan of #opensource and #selfhosting and are working on open sourced projects like #serenum.

Since I woke up, and there's new users here, #introduction

I am Joel, #Mexican, 21, studying #Mechatronics but I enjoy learning other things online instead

I like #FOSS and styling my stuff, such as #android, #linux or my #blog

I like meeting new people, my attempts at humor are terrible, my #origami posts get kinda famous, I enjoy getting into new #hobbies
