Thoughts on Plasma 6 which just released end of February? I'm considering trying the new KDE Neon #Linux distro :breadthink:

Workbench 46 is out! 🛠️

flathub.org/apps/re.sonny.Work…

Actually it was a couple of hours ago before GNOME 46 but I didn't want to steal the show 😎

Here are the highlights 💡

Inline diagnostics for #Rust :rust: and #Python :python:

New Library demos: 📚

"Snapshot" to demonstrate one of GTK4 coolest feature.

"Dialog" and "Message Dialogs" to demonstrate libadwaita 1.5 new responsive dialogs.

26 demos ported to Python
5 demos ported to Vala

Today #GNOME 46 is released and as it has been a tradition for 16 years, I wrote an article about the release for @rootcz (in Czech).

Thank you stranger. The work required to review Flatpak is very much appreciated.

A VM vending machine at #SCaLE21x! You put in a dollar, select your distro, and it creates a VM you can ssh into.

Edit: @dualdflipflop was behind this. Give him a follow.

Keep testing the OBS and Firefox PipeWire camera support. Screenshot below is Firefox and OBS sharing a camera through PipeWire and also OBS embedding the Firefox window plus also having my USB HDMI capture screen included. #pipewire #linux #obsstudio #fedora #flatpak

After being kneecapped by a #patents troll years ago, #Mozilla Location Services, the only somewhat trusted (non-Google/Apple) "Wi-Fi positioning system" (geolocation based on triangulating collected #WiFi SSIDs), is now shutting down: github.com/mozilla/ichnaea/iss…

MLS was how #GeoClue could get a meters-accurate location without a #GPS receiver / sky line-of-sight.

It was used by many #GNOME / #KDE apps to get instantaneous neighborhood-level location (for maps, local weather…) on #Linux laptops.

With todays release of @OBSProject 30.1.0, which of course is available as a Flatpak, I was finally able to have Helvum display this for video streams through @pipewirep. I have to admit I did have some issues, but hopefully we can iron those out quickly in PipeWire and @libcamera. #linux #pipewire #fedora

So @gnome is removing the x11 session, leaving just the Wayland one.

If this goes out before Orca, the GNOME screen reader, is fixed to work on Wayland, it will mean that people who rely on screen readers will have no way to use one on GNOME. And thus on the major Linux distributions.

So I’m hoping the plan is that this change will not land until GNOME has a working screen reader.

The #GUADEC2024 call for abstracts for those looking to be *sponsored* has passed (due to visa reqs & travel lead time), BUT the call for both in-person (if you don’t need sponsorship) and remote talks IS STILL OPEN!

events.gnome.org/event/209/abs…

If you’ve been working on something interesting in GNOME or GNOME-adjacent spaces and can present remotely or get yourself to Denver in July, you still have just over two weeks to propose a talk!

For IRC lovers who also happen to love and use Linux, I have some good news for you! I have created hooks for the Smuxi IRC client that add sound support for message events. So far only send and receive are supported along with a different sound if your name is mentioned in a message, but more are on the way! Smuxi is extremely accessible, Orca supports auto reading of messages received and sent automatically, the only thing missing was sound support. Instructions on using the hooks as well as the hooks themselves are here:

Check out this recap of the work that Community Platform Engineering did in 2023! The CPE team is made up of the folks who manage Fedora infrastructure, Fedora release engineering, and @centos infrastructure.

Projects worked on or investigated:
* Making a @matrix native zodbot
* Moving our registry to quay.io
* Backend service for Fedora Badges
* And more!

Voici des nouvelles du développement de Thunderbird :
— travail en cours sur #Exchange avec du Rust
— la synchronisation de Thunderbird est presque prête à être testée #Sync
— comme avec Flatpak, le projet s’approprie le paquet #Linux Snap

Happy Friday Fediverse family! In case you missed it:
☑️ We're working on Exchange support
☑️ Thunderbird Sync is almost ready for testing
☑️ As we did with Flatpak, we're taking ownership of the Linux Snap package.

I just found out that in the past few months there has been work happening in @gnome to allow for encrypting user home directories using #systemd homed : thisweek.gnome.org/posts/2024/…

It appears as though this would put each home directory inside its own LUKS container that would be locked when the user logs out or the hardware suspends. This would be a major improvement to the security profile of #Linux on the desktop!

Currently, on most systems (including Linux) regular user data is only effectively protected by system encryption when the hardware is completely turned off, but not when it is suspended.

#Linux #opensource #messaging

#FOSDEM: While efficient video playback has long been possible in the embedded #Linux world, desktop applications have been lagging behind. Here's a look at the state of video offloading on the Linux desktop, by Robert Mader: youtube.com/watch?v=SMCMZwAiw2… #GStreamer #GTK #Chromium

“Improved build validation, increased moderation, and the long-awaited switch to libappstream” by @barthalion

Heads up to app developers: Flathub’s automatic build validation is more thorough now, and includes checks for issues we previously would have only flagged manually. There’s a chance that if your app has been passing continuous integration checks previously, it will fail now; here’s why, and what to do about it:

TIL: #Wayland breaks most screen readers, as they are not not intended by design. (they need to interact with other apps)

Wayland is now the default in pretty much all gnome distros.

Orca has workarounds, but they are not merged and not fully working. (And a blind user can't built it without a working screen reader)

I'm not entirely sure if I got this correct, but it seems to me like the #Linux community once again booted the #blind.
