My friend has an ubuntu laptop and forgot her password. It logs in to her account on boot, but obviously not having the password is not a sustainable situation.
What's the least disruptive way to sort this out? Can I just boot off a stick and clear /etc/password is there a better way forward?
I'm quite impressed how #EndeavourOS, despite not being _glamorous_ or hyped up as some of the rest in the list - is doing quite well at ~2.12% of the #Linux #Steam users. Not **that** far off from something like #Bazzite (~5.89%) and is higher even than #Fedora, #Manjaro, and #PopOS. EndeavourOS was the boat I chose when I decided to leave #Windows few years back, and it's still going strong. Despite #ArchLinux having a rep to 'break', my PC and all of my family members' have yet to go through such a thing lol. Its rep of being not user-friendly to noobs is also not that true seeing how a solution to a problem, if any, is often one search away from the incredibly documented Arch Wiki - better than relying on hundreds of conflicting information scattered through distros' forums. I'm perfectly aware everyone's experience is unique to their own, esp with something as fragmented as Linux, but I'd be remiss not to mention that while my EndeavourOS experience has been flawless, I've had broken/borked systems with 2 #Debian/#Ubuntu based distros (not gonna name, names), Manjaro (Arch based, though some might not agree), and even Bazzite (Fedora based). These were with #Intel/#AMD systems too that's supposedly 'ideal', at least 2 of my EndeavourOS systems meanwhile have #NVIDIA GPUs (i.e. 'not ideal'). These were a couple of years ago tho before reaching my 'final distro', EndeavourOS tho so things may have improved for these distros too. All in all, my point is, despite not being the glamorous, popular option... THANK YOU to the EndeavourOS team for clearly putting in a ton of work to ensure our (supposedly) broken-prone systems to keep running stably.
Runner up in "problematic downstream/distros packaging behavior" is #Canonical insisting on packaging old buggy versions in #Ubuntu using their endemic #Snap format. Ex.: snapcraft.io/gnome-calendar It'd be really nice if they'd stop doing that, this is absolutely detrimental to the app's developers.
#SnapCraft creates confusion, until users eventually go out of their way to surgically remove it from their desktop OS in the same way Raiden rips out spines to acquire electrolytes.

Früher zeigte das #NextCloud Symbol in der #ubuntu Desktop-Statusleiste vollflächig durch grün, gelb und rot an, wie der aktuelle Stand der Syncronisation ist.
Seit einiger Zeit wurde es durch das Logo ersetzt, welches eine Art mini winzigen Badge, wahrscheinlich ein grünes Häkchen trägt, wenn die Sync i.O ist.

Nothing wrong with being the #Ubuntu or #LinuxMint of decentralised #FOSS messengers... people who need the Archlinuxes and BSDs will find them in time.
I have managed to onboard lots of people to cross-platform messengers like #DeltaChat, #ElementMessenger and #SignalApp, but not a single person to XMPP. Cross platform apps also make switching OSes eaiser, e.g. migrating from Windows to Linux, or Android to LinuxMobile.
Ca. 15 Jahre nutze ich nun #ubuntu auch beruflich fast ausschließlich. Aber erst dieser Tage habe ich so richtig gecheckt, dass man dem Terminal sagen kann, in welcher Fenstergröße es starten soll:

Einen #Desktop #PC habe ich mir vor ein paar Jahren zusammengebaut. Vielleicht hatte ich keine glückliche Hand bei der Auswahl von #CPU, #RAM und #Motherboard und das Zusammenspiel ist nicht optimal?
Er läuft sehr gut - bis auf unvermittelte Totalabstürtze ohne Logeinträge, die mir weiterhelfen konnten.
Irgendwann stolperte ich über ein #Gnome AdOn zur leichten Ampassung der CPU Leistung. Nach der Begrenzung der max. Frequenz via Multimedia-Mode lief er stabil.
Unter #ubuntu 24 funktioniert das AdOn nicht mehr und ich habe mir nun ein Script eingerichtet, welches nach dem Start die max. Frequenz begrenzt:

Schrittweise habe ich die Frequenz von ca. 4,3 GHZ nach jedem Neustart erhöht, und habe so die Stufe herausbekommen, bis der er ohne Absturtz läuft.
Interessanteweise stürtze er nicht bei Operationen ab, bei denen man es erwartet hätte, z.B. der Transkodierung von #Video. Das letzte Mal rauschte er in die Tiefe, als ich lediglich mit #Firefox #GitHub aufgerufen hatte ... was auch immer da die Frequenz nach oben getrieben hat?
Es handlet sich um einen Intel® Core™ i7-9700. Dass ich die 4,7 GHz nicht zur Verfügung habe stört mich übrigens gar nicht. Jedenfalls bemerke ich keine langsamere Arbeitsumgebung durch die Begrenzung ... und Gnome ist offenbar seit den neuen Versionen stark optimiert worden, was die Geschwindigkeit angeht...
One of the nice touches of @linuxmint file manager is that when you open a folder as root, the window displays a nice red banner on top that says "Elevated Privileges".

I have been using #trixie in testing mode for a couple of months. Its been very stable and I'm so impressed that we are moving the company across from the snap-infested Kubuntu
I did it! Today I switched from #Windows 10 to #Ubuntu on my Surface Pro and it mostly works. I still have to work out a few kinks, but I'm really happy. I also managed quite a feat at work and, thanks to a random internet person, learned that there's something called PMDD. Overall, it was a pretty successful day.
If so, I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I love #linux and always have. I have literally made my career with it ever since I first booted the H.J. Lu boot/root floppy set on my 486 DX2/66, but I'm partially #blind, and my vision is getting worse as I age.
And at times the amount of negativity and crap I get when I say that I generally run #WSL on Windows or a Mac? It's huge, pointless, and speaks to some ways in which parts of the Linux community are its own worst enemy.
When screen zoom broke for 2 years in #ubuntu and many of us kept signposting how important this is to us, over and over, and one of the Canonical engineers wrote in the issue saying that, due simply to the very limited number of engineering hours available, this was a low priority fix? That was a wake up call for me.
There's no malice there. It's not that anyone in the Linux community is doing an evil laugh and thrilling to the number of disabled users who can't reliably enjoy Linux on the desktop, it's about the reality that a tiny, rag tag group of engineers working for a handful of companies are doing the vast majority of the work keeping the Linux desktop world moving, and they BARELY have the bandwidth to keep development going at all much less catering to the myriad accessibility needs folks like us (Not comparing the nature of our didabilities, mind you. Everyone's different!).
But people like the guy your post responds to can make us feel not smart enough, not good enough, or not motivated enough to thrive in an environment that throws up HUGE obstacles, and that's just not right.
Pardon the length, I have Strong Feelings about this stuff as you can see, and thanks again for posting!

Does anyone know where to report #a11y issues with the #Ubuntu Mate installer? I just tried to install ubuntu-mate-25.04 and sadly, it's pretty much a no go with Orca. Alt+Windows+S works to bring up the screen reader. The first screen of the installer appears to be the language selection screen; but after that, Orca is pretty much dead in the water, utterly unable to read anything else except "next" buttons. Pretty sad. Looks like they're not a11y testing this at all.
Certain models of Lenovo laptops now ship with Fedora and Ubuntu Linux. This is done to keep costs low and cater to developers or IT professionals who heavily rely on Linux. Another reason could be the increased unpopularity of Windows 11 in recent times due unwanted features like "AI" or "Recall", but that is just my own wild guess ;) LOL. Would you buy it?

Naja, man ist da sicher auf einem guten Weg. Aber das Jonglieren mit config Dateien und Einstellungen erinnert mich doch etwas daran, wie es vor reichlich zehn Jahren war, wenn man #jack und #pulseaudio zusammenbringen wollte.
Zwar muss jetzt nicht soo viel konfiguriert werden, aber man muss schon ein wenig herumsuchen...

I use an RSS feed for news, and I’m sure I’m not the only one here on the Fediverse who appreciates the convenience it offers, because it helps me stay informed in a way that suits my preferences.
