Just wanted to install an #XMPP client to create an account to test something. I moved away to #Matrix years ago because I had no hope anymore for #XMPP, but now that I wanted to create an account, I am just shocked at how dead it is: #Fedora still has Gajim 1.7.3, when the last release is 2.4.1. #pkgsrc is a bit but noch much better with 2.1.1. #Tkabber is even worse: pkgsrc has 0.11.1, when 1.1.2 is the latest release that was released in 2015(!). It seems distributions keep XMPP clients around, but don’t update them because nobody is using them anymore. I had not expected for XMPP to be that dead. That’s shocking.
I also think if distributions cannot be bothered to update a package in over 10 years, they should just remove it…
There seem to be two kinds of people. Those where #matrix mostly just works and those who run into all kinds of issues and complain 24/7 about how awful everything is.
I wonder why I'm in the first group. Seriously, what am I doing different?
As ever in January, Element lit up like a Christmas tree on my phone as all the #Matrix invites for #FOSDEM came in this evening. Feels vaguely festive.

Ich habe den Eindruck, dass Matrix weitaus problemloser läuft als XMPP.
Bei XMPP kann sich nicht jeder Client an jedem Server anmelden (ich habe diverse Clients und Server, nicht nur meinen eigenen mit ejabberd, getestet). Und auch die Kommunikation zwischen zwei Accounts funktioniert manchmal gar nicht, manchmal nur in eine Richtung und irgendwie nur selten problemlos. Auch da wieder stark abhängig vom Client.
Ein Problem mit meinem Server mag sein, dass er unter einer Subdomain (xmpp.example.com) läuft. Ich mutmaße, dass nicht jeder Server bzw. Client damit zurechtkommt. Zwischen meinem Server und dem von Mailbox.org klappt jedenfalls gar nichts. Aber ich habe noch nicht einmal eine Möglichkeit gefunden, für Mailbox.org einen andeten Client als deren Web-Client zu verwenden. Ich glaube fast, die sind nur zu sich selbst kompatibel.
Manche sagen freilich auch, dass ejabberd recht eigenwillig sei.
Mit Matrix hingegen hatte ich bisher keine Probleme (auch da habe ich einen eigenen Server am Start).

#XMPP is still a thriving ecosystem with lots of good FOSS developers doing interesting things.
XMPP is also used under the hood in tons of products needing instant messaging even if they are not advertised as XMPP clients, or do not federate.
Anyway, XMPP and #matrix all share a strong focus on protocols, but there is a big difference: chatmail.at does not expose protocols to client developers, just a Rust SDK.

The idea of Matrix as a chat service is nice. But the fact that it keeps going out of sync, and I keep losing messages from other people is just plain annoying. This is worse than IRC net split (at least there was a message when it happened).

Our shared experience is that there is no accessible client out there. So whenever you offer to "Ditch slack for Matrix", think once more.
Officially going to ditch my Matrix account thanks to the poor accessibility experience with the Element X mobile app and the Element web app… neither of these options play nicely with screen readers in their current form, and my level of frustration has reached its breaking point. I’ll be removing all links to my Matrix account from my website in the near future, but all other links to my social media and messaging apps are still valid. Basically, accessibility is my primary roadblock using more apps on the Fediverse as it seems most of them, don’t take accessibility for screen reader users into account in their design, or if they do, it’s not a serious commitment. #A11Y #Accessibility #Fediverse #Matrix #ElementX #ElementWeb
and besides that, setup is something you do only once, the real struggle comes next, I have never self-hosted matrix but see people complaining or even de-federating due to server burden, while I do host a #chatmail server with +8k users in a 5eur VPS using 1.2gb of ram and 19gb of disk, now try the same with #matrix

I really really REALLY want to use all the awesome privacy friendly FOSS (and similar) stuff, but I am not a techie person! I don't know how to program, nor do I want to.
And every SINGLE time I try to find out even what thing (OS, program, app, service, etc) to use, let alone how, and I search for it... I get techie-focused answers.
It's complete gibberish to me! Absolutely useless. It makes me feel actively unwelcome even though I really care about using alternatives to Windows, Meta, X and other dystopic nonsense.
For example: I'm like "How do I start a non-enshittified group chat to talk about a thing?" and all the results are technobabble to me. I don't even know if the words they use are supposed to be normal english words or if they refer to orgs or groups or apps or some weird coding wizardry.
I am so lost, every single time.
I stick with it though. But like. I wonder if the tech people realise that this is happening???? Because they probably understand what they're talking about. And they seem to not realise that not everyone does.
I'm not trying to blame or shame anyone or even complaining as such (a little bit complaining, ngl), mostly just giving feedback. This is not an issue with a singe thing but with ALL of it as a whole! Including #GNU #Linux the #Fediverse #Matrix and most #FOSS apps.
My sincere wish: Give non-techie people an EASY TO FIND and easy to read and easy to understand and easy to implement guide about how to use the things as an alternative to using big corporation services, ie, "I just want it to work" and not have to worry about the technical side of things. Countering toxicity and fake takes is not just a technical question (moderation, admins etc) but one of social curation both collectively and privately: which people and groups do you/we trust for what. No tool can automate that.
#deltachat is for private e2ee messaging and mutually curated group chats, and not random social media propelled onboarding. We are with #Signal here and not with #simplex and #matrix who offer public anonymous discovery of large chat groups with lots of unknown folks.

quick heads up. Our impressions: #matrix is going strong with public sector entities, and it's where most dynamics happened at the conf.
We are rather focused on private and resilient messaging where servers don't play a big role; as we want #chatmail relays to be dirt cheap to operate, no pro version needed. Our focus is on informal usage, groups, family, friends, affinity or interest groups, whereas matrix is increasingly focusing on corporate/ organizational use cases. YMMV
