The United States Government, in the wake of mobile cellular networks being compromised by China, finally suggested Americans use encrypted apps and services. One of those suggestions, provided as an exexample, by the Joe Biden Administration, was Signal.

Donald Trump, however, around the time Mark Zuckerberg made his announcement, concerning Meta policy, has continuously used WhatsApp as their example.

Anyone who goes through my post history, knows I work for Meta (Facebook).

I am "Consumer Content Administrative Manager". My primary duties include content appeals, account appeals, account reviews, and some peer review.

It is no surprise that my job depends on people using Facebook. Today, I am going to suggest, you not do so. I can make that suggestion because we have a user base of billions, and I know most people would keep using Facebook even if the Devil ran the company. People are strange.

But if you feel you can truly live without Facebook, do so. Internally, things are changing, and not for the better. You should especially consider leaving Meta if you are a minority, woman, LGBTQ+, trans, or identify as progressive, politically. If facts matter to you, and misinformation is something you do not want to be subject toward, you should especially consider leaving, Facebook.

You have no privacy from Meta, while using Meta. None. I do not care if you believe you disabled a "feature" or "opt out" of something. You only seem to have done so. And even if you're going to continue to use Meta, uninstall the app (all of them). We collect data on you, even when you're not using the app.

On the occasion of Russia today testing regional blocks of telegram and other apps (especially in eastern Russia) and #WhatsApp down or flaky in many countries the last hours ... Allow us to note that it is very hard to block or bring down #deltachat apps on any larger scale because

A) it's hard to block the planetary email server network

B) #chatmail servers have some extras :)

C) DNS blocks won't work

Today, two open letters from academics on the scientific arguments against the current #CSS (client side scanning) initiatives have been released:

* The first (in English, internationally coordinated) one is online at tinyurl.com/CSAScientistsLette… and still open for additional signatures.

* The second (in German, by #Austrian academics) one is online at ins.jku.at/chatcontrol/ and explicitly includes law experts in addition to the arguments from a security, privacy, and AI perspective.

This debate is expected to gain new steam with #Spain taking over the EU council presidency, given recently leaked statements like "Ideally, in our view, it would be desirable to legislatively prevent EU-based service providers from implementing end-to-end encryption" (wired.co.uk/article/europe-bre…).

#Meta is well known for how it removes its competitors from its way. If they can't easily crush them with their size, they buy them young - #whatsapp and #instagram come to mind. Meta has money, and they don't want anyone in their way. Buyouts are the easiest solution.

But the Fediverse cannot be bought. No one controls it. It's a collection of servers, each with its own operators and principles. There is nothing central that Meta can control here...

...except for one: the #protocol.
