Hey, Linux people: a LOT of folks are screaming off Windows right now.

Be. Kind. To. Them.

They don't know much yet, so they are going to ask really basic questions. If you're KIND, you might get some to give it a try and stick to it bc they know they can ask for help. If you're unkind, you're showing them using Linux will be *worse* than Windows. If you can't bring yourself to be kind, then SAY NOTHING. Let others pick up that slack.

Our regular Development Digest has some exciting updates on features that are nearing completion, in the case of Exchange email support, and are just starting development, in the case of the long-awaited Conversation View. We're also adjusting Account Hub and tackling the usual maintenance tasks and bug fixes

I wish there was an open-source license that had an ‘if you are a company with over $<X> revenue, then you owe <Y>% of it to the project’ type of clause.

Wouldn't that mostly fix the problem? Is there such a license available now? #openSource

[ Addendum: I'm still compelled by this idea. But, here is an important differing point of view: thenewstack.io/open-source-is-… ]

For this month's Office Hours, we're talking to members of our Design Team about how we're assessing and improving Accessibility in Thunderbird. We'd love to bring them your questions! Please leave them in a comment to this post and we'll do our best to answer as many as we can in the recording and blog post!

I have just released new versions of PHPUnit 8.5, PHPUnit 9.6, PHPUnit 10.5, PHPUnit 11.5, and PHPUnit 12.3.

These new versions (as well as new versions of some of their dependencies) no longer use functionality that was deprecated for PHP 8.5 within the last 24 hours or so. This should make testing your code with PHP 8.5 easier.

How is your Sunday going?

Also curious #linux people. If you were following a new and upcoming distro like #nixbook how would you want to get updates on it?

Should I have an email newsletter type of thing, a blog? What's your fav way to get updates on projects you want to follow?

#Catima 2.36.0 is out!

In this release we added a card list widget, one of the most requested features since the project was started!

We hope to extend the widget in the future to allow you to choose which cards you want to show and how you want them sorted.

Coming soon to an app store near you!

TIL: Google Gemini is significantly better at reading the kinds of colourful graphs you see on server monitoring dashboards than are any of the other leading #AI models from #OpenAI and #Meta. Why yes, I do, in fact, resent that I had to learn this. Because #OpenSource tools don't make data visualizations #accessible to #screenreaders (even on the terminal) sometimes the things I #selfhost to get rid of big tech just mean I have to use big tech anyway to fix them when they explode. But never the less, Google is the only AI that doesn't tell me about the menus and other Windows I captured by mistake in my screenshot, doesn't make unhelpful recommendations, and actually provides the data without cluttering it up with Emoji. But I did appreciate metta telling me "This graph shows CPU use on the X axis, RAM use on the Y axis, network use on the Z axis, and time on the fake axis." I mean, open source UI is famously terrible...but I don't think it's that terrible...yet! Shhh, don't give the data visualization people any ideas!

I am having a consistent problem where I am unable to clone everything from this repository into my local machine. Every time I clone using the command line, none of the documentation shows up. only one folder seems to show up and that appears to be the GitHub folder. Does anyone know what the cause of this could possibly be and how to rectify the issue? github.com/buttondown/docs #OpenSource #Git #GitHub #CLI

🆕 blog! “I'm never going back to Matrix”

I should love Matrix. It is a decentralised, privacy preserving, multi-platform chat tool. Goodbye Slack and your ridiculous free limits. Adiós Discord and your weird gamification. Suck it IRC with your obscure syntax and faint stench of BO. WhatsApp and Telegram can stick their heads in a bucket of lukewarm sick and sing sea …

After two weeks of writing, revising, and trying to make everything as digestible as possible, I finally published "GNOME Calendar: A New Era of Accessibility Achieved in 90 Days", where I explain in detail the steps we took to turn GNOME Calendar from an app that was literally unusable with a keyboard and screen reader to an app that is (finally) accessible to keyboard and screen reader users as of GNOME 49!
