Well fuck. If a room in #Matrix is on Homeserver A, and an admin on Homeserver B runs /upgraderoom, then the room is moved to Homeserver B. It does not stay on Homeserver A.

I uhh... do not want the unofficial Slackware matrix server on my homeserver.

Does anyone know why Matrix doesn't notify you when a picture message is received? It's super annoying. And I say Matrix instead of naming a client because every single client refuses to notify for it so I imagine it's something in the spec.

The past few days I've been building a small tool for checking how many members of a given Matrix room support which maximum room version. The idea has been sparked by room version 12 being released, so that one can assess the adoption rate for the new room version and make an educated decision on when to upgrade rooms.

If you want to get a sense of what the Matrix network will be like once Matrix 2.0 is fully rolled out, get yourself ElementX, and try it with an account on the matrix.org homeserver. I haven't had a chance to really stress test it yet. But from what I've experienced so far, it's a *huge* improvement on Matrix 1.0.

EDIT 2: ElementX is the Matrix 2.0 version of Element. Despite the fact that it remains significantly incomplete, and may not meet all your needs 🤦‍♂️

@matrix I have a question about Matrix.org's upcoming Free plan. I see it doesn't allow creation of public rooms. I created a public room on matrix.org two years ago. If I go on the Free plan, will I still be able to access and modify my existing room?

What frustrates me the most about #Matrix is that Vector clusterfucked the client situation themselves. Having a de facto default, "go-to" Matrix client with feature parity across all platforms was one of the biggest strengths. Now we have feature split between two official clients. And the one they promote these days is still an unfinished beta. 🤯 It is absolutely mindboggling how you can screw up this bad.

I’m looking for a team chat solution that allows me to *really* mute/block users, like here on Mastodon or with an `/ignore` on IRC.

Zulip and Discord don’t really mute/block messages, they only conceal their content and let you know they’re here. This doesn’t help much imho.

Is this kind of `/ignore` feature available in #Matrix or #DeltaChat?
Otherwise, are there Zulip/Discord clients that support it?

All these thoughts are unfortunately completely irrelevant. Whatever I think about #Telegram (or #Signal for that matter) doesn't matter when I don't know almost anybody using it. All my friends, family, and such are on #WhatsApp so that's it for me. I actually use a bridge (by #Element, paid for) from #Matrix, but without that I would either have to use their app or be that strange guy who communicates only via #SMS (as I was for many years).

I am becoming increasingly doubtful of #Telegram's background and direction. #WhatsApp is owned by #Meta and just announced that it will introduce ads. So, it looks like I'm left with #Signal and #Matrix. The former has better UX, but it's centralized and US-based. The latter is a bit clumsy but decentralized and EU-based. Neither is perfect, but they are the closest to it for me.

#ElementX nutze ich schon länger parallel zu #Element für meine Chats.

Nun habe ich aber das neue #SchildiChat Next ausprobiert.

Es basiert auch auf ElementX, hat aber #Spaces integriert. Das gefällt mir sehr gut. Damit lassen sich z.B. Chaträume übersichtlich ordnen.

#Matrix ist für mich nach wie vor ne gute Sache. Ich würde es auch WhatsApp-Wechslern eher empfehlen als #Signal ... vor allem auch, weil man sich damit nicht vom Smartphone abhängig macht.

Tiny new feature: Checkboxes in a message.

No, I'm not gonna make it a full blown task list app 😜 but it happens quite often, that my wife sends me a list of groceries when I'm walking to the supermarket. This way I'm now able to check, what I have already in my cart so I don't forget anything.

It works by sending special reactions under the hood. So anyone with reaction sending permissions in a room can check any box from any sender.
