Wonder if any other #Blind #iOS 18.2 beta 1 users are seeing a serious #VoiceOver regression?
I suspect this relates to a specific kind of list control, but in certain apps, as I flick left or right through items, VoiceOver just goes silent on certain items. Sometimes, if you flick left to the previous item and then right to get back to the item that wasn’t speaking before, you hear the item, at other times you don’t, and the only way to hear the currently focussed item is to perform a three-finger single tap.
I am seeing this after trying several voices, and making a few other changes that I thought might work around the problem. So far, I haven’t found a fix.
I am seeing this in a list of articles in the Lire RSS Reader, it’s happening a little here in Mona, and it is also reproduceable if I go into VoiceOver settings and flick through the items in the What’s New in VoiceOver screen.
It is speech only. If you have a Braille display connected, you can read the item in Braille even when VoiceOver doesn’t speak it.
I’d be curious to know if others are seeing it, because if it is widespread, it could be a reason for those who rely heavily on their iPhones to give the public beta a miss assuming this first build goes out to public beta.

Question to those #blind folks who have used the new Braille screen input of #iOS 18 on an iPad: Is there a different way to calibrate one's finger positions on iPad? I just got a new iPad Mini, and in both table top and away modes, the expected finger positions are so wide spread by default, that my hands barely manage to type anything cohesive. But putting first dots 4 5 6 and then dots 1 2 3 on the screen like it works on iPhone, doesn't result in the calibration of the finger positions. So, any trick I am unaware of?

Right, I'm going to do something I dislike, but I literally don't know how else to get support to follow up with me.
I have indeed submitted two support requests in the intervening time, i'm not just being lazy I promise.
On 17 Aug I made a video about #FloatPlane accessibility and how not good it is.
I wasn't a troll, I was constructive and thoughtful, and yet I cannot get a hold of anyone at either Floatplane Media or LTT.
If *anyone* happens to know someone at one of these companies and could get my video to them, I'd be extremely grateful.
The other thing I really dislike doing is asking if people could boost for reach, but I'll make an exception.
Fedi is big now, and far more reaching than modern-day xitter, so all help gratefully received.

Oh hell no! Just went to the #SiriusXM app for #iOS, and I was going to try to see if a certain station was still there. I didn't find out because when I went to browse by genre I ran into... wait for it... button, one of 25, button 2 of 25... you get it. Not mused!

Okay y'all, I need to understand this. So someone said that a Pixel 8 is faster than an iPhone 15. Can someone help me understand why someone would say such a thing? The iPhone 15 has a much better SOC than even the Pixel 9, and Google has said that they aren't pushing for benchmarks. This person is using a screen reader, TalkBack and VoiceOver. Meanwhile, to me, the Pixel 8 feels even slower than my iPhone SE 2020, and the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE. Like I guess it could be their way of coping with Android, but I mean there are people who genuinely like it. And yes, it has LLM image descriptions now, so I mean there are people that will put up with it just for that feature. But, meh, sometimes people are unknowable.

Playing around with the new iOS 18 features and I thought the new command mode of Braille Screen Input will make me the ultimate forms wizard, just opening the BSI, filling one field in, switching to commands and over to the next field. It sort of works with the dots 1 and 4 navigating to the previous and next item but it also goes over every single label, anything that is not a form field etc. Tried the same by setting the rotor to form controls but as soon as an edit field is found the editing commands jump in and I can only navigate by characters, words and lines. What would actually help is a gesture simulating the pressing of tab to jump to the next interactive element. Rant, and voice, over. #Accessibility #Blind #Apple #iOS

Cannot get Face ID to work on this new phone, so, have disabled it. I finally got the thing to accept my face, but, when I try to use it, to unlock the phone, the phone just keeps saying, "try again ". So I have StraightTalk. And here lately, I've been getting 0 to 1 bar of phone signal. Calls go to Voicemail without me even getting a ring, all that. So I turn on and off Airplane mode, all that. This is with my iPhone SE 2020. If I upgrade to the new iPhone 16, do y'all think that would improve?

Apple gave us a great, #accessible graphing calculator on #iOS and #iPadOS in the form of math notes. Given, for example a quadratic function: y=2x^2 +x +1 it generates a graph which sounds like this. While such simple quadratic equations can be used only in schools I see huge potential in making math more accessible to the #blind. As a math nerd and someone who almost failed a year at school due to accessibility, I am really happy and grateful to #apple for making this accessible to us.
