I'd go for #NextCloud, they have plenty of other cool apps. If she has no particular accessibility needs, it's a good solution. Otherwise, they have quite a lot of rough edges in their frontend department, unfortunately, but it's still manageable.

I tested more thoroughly simple #NextCloud apps that I was willing to use, like Deck, Notes, and Tasks. Unfortunately their #accessibility is so that it's quite painful to use. And, as far as I could investigate, main accessibility problems come from core NextCloud frontend components, like NCSelect (pseudo-combo-box'ish thing) or NCListItem. Sad but true.

A question for selfhosters: What do you consider the best option for a self hosted cloud drive?

I've deployed owncloud some time ago. But I don't know whether it is currently the best choice or not. Nextcloud? Any other?

Looks good! Does it support Caldav sync from an external online calendar like #nextcloud ?

I'm wondering if #NextCloud team considers making theming more flexible. I really hate those freaking dropdowns everywhere in the settings, I'd replace it with plain <select> items for #Accessibility purposes. I'm not familiar with the code yet though, maybe I'll propose some checkbox on the Accessibility tab… just thoughts. @nextcloud

:nextcloud: 🧩
I installed #NextCloud extension gPodder Sync. This does just job, it provides gPodder api. That's it. I like apps that do one thing and do it right.

This api can be used by client apps to synchornize

:catjam: Spent the last couple hours going through and configuring @nextcloud.

Considering I have zero PHP experience and I opted to go the manual route rather than Docker. I gotta give the developers credit for writing excellent documentation. 🎉

Hi @nextcloud! Where can I report #NextCloud accessibility bugs? How can I contribute to fix them? You have sooo many repositories, I'm a bit confuzzled. Thanks!

If someone proposed you, say, 100 GB of #NextCloud hosting to have your own private cloud for $3 or 3 € a month with unmetered bandwidth, full setup and tech support specifically tailored for #accessibility needs, would you consider it? #Boosts encouraged! Thanks!

New blogpost: Thunderbird, Nextcloud, calendar invitations, and unwanted html email with non-working 'confirm acceptance' links

Last week, someone kindly flagged a problem with how I'd got calendar invitations set up, and it was annoying me.

So, over the weekend, I fixed it :)

Hey #nextcloud users - Give me an idea for an app you'd like to see in Nextcloud.

Wer will, kann dann in diesen Ordnern Dinge tun.

chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtath…

echo "Hello World"

wiki.hostsharing.net/index.php…

xyz00-cloud@h00:~$ cd ~/nextcloud/updater
xyz00-cloud@h00:~/nextcloud/updater$ chmod u+x updater.phar
xyz00-cloud@h00:~/nextcloud/updater$ ./updater.phar

xyz00-cloud@h00:~$ cd ~/nextcloud
xyz00-cloud@h00:~/nextcloud$ php occ db:add-missing-primary-keys --no-interaction
xyz00-cloud@h00:~/nextcloud$ php occ db:add-missing-columns --no-interaction
xyz00-cloud@h00:~/nextcloud$ php occ db:add-missing-indices --no-interaction
xyz00-cloud@h00:~/nextcloud$ php occ db:convert-filecache-bigint --no-interaction

xyz00-cloud@h00:~$ cd ~/nextcloud
xyz00-cloud@h00:~/nextcloud$ php occ app:update --all -n --no-ansi

Big kudos to the Schleswig-Holstein!

Another German administration is breaking Microsoft’s glass cage, and at a first read the scope of this initiative seems more ambitious than many I’ve witnessed in the past.

Both the ArsTechnica article and the original announcement don’t include a few details to make better estimate on the possible success of this initiative though.

The announcement follows previously established plans to migrate the state government off Microsoft Office in favor of open source LibreOffice.

I hope that there’s a Web-based offering somewhere on the horizon. Fewer and fewer employees nowadays run Word/Excel directly on their machines. Most of them run Google Docs or use Microsoft’s office cloud. Giving them a stand-alone app which limits the possibilities for online collaboration may be met with resistance, especially now that many of them are already getting used to online AI assistants. I read that #NextCloud is involved - I hope there’s a plan to run #CollaboraOffice, which is more or less like running the LibreOffice engine as a service, #OnlyOffice or some equivalent alternative.

Due to the high hardware requirements of Windows 11, we would have a problem with older computers. With Linux we don’t have that

Very sensitive decision that will probably save taxpayers a lot of money. But it’d also be interested to know which #Linux distro has been selected. Hopefully the administration won’t repeat Munich’s past mistakes and it won’t try to build and maintain their own distro. Better get into talks with a popular distro (probably not Red Hat, but hey isn’t SuSE German?) and orchestrate a deal where the State funds its development, and in exchange it gets development support. It’s a win-win where a distro not managed by a giant like Red Hat or Canonical can get consistent direct funding from a public administration (that’s what many of us have been advocating for years anyway), and the local administration can enjoy the support of a well-documented distro like OpenSuSE, Mint, Pop_OS or Manjaro without having to reinvent the wheel and scramble for their own developers/packagers/maintainers, and minimizing the risk of going from one vendor lock-in (Microsoft) to another (IBM or Canonical).

The government will ditch Microsoft Sharepoint and Exchange/Outlook in favor of open source offerings Nextcloud and Open-Xchange, and Mozilla Thunderbird

Same issue as with LibreOffice: folks today are used to webmail and mobile apps. Thunderbird definitely fills the gap on the stand-alone side, especially now that it’s getting more love and support than before. But it still lacks an official mobile app - K-9 is almost there, but not nearly there yet. And it doesn’t solve the “I’m used to the GMail/Outlook interface and set all of my filters and do my advanced search from a webview” problem. There’s actually a big gap there. What’s a decent open webmail UI that can compete with GMail/Outlook nowadays? RoundCube feels ancient and it has barely changed in 15 years. SnappyMail is a bit better, and it’s what a use as a selected webmail client too, but it’s still lightyears behind GMail/Outlook. NextCloud Mail is slowly getting there, but it only integrates with a NextCloud solution. Let’s admit that there’s a gap that needs to be filled fast if we don’t want employees who have years of email muscle memory trained in specific environments to doom the project.

Schleswig-Holstein is also developing an open source directory service to replace Microsoft’s Active Directory and an open source telephony offering.

Please, don’t. Just don’t. A local administration, no matter how well-intentioned and initially well-funded, just won’t have the resources necessary to invent such big wheels. And, even if it somehow manages to bake something together, it’ll eventually be a patchy solution that they’ll have to maintain themselves for years to come, and that is unlikely to find adoption outside of its initial borders.

Invest into #OpenLDAP to fill the gaps left by ActiveDirectory on the LDAP side instead. That project needs a lot more love. And leverage WebDAV for almost everything else. If you are already planning to use NextCloud, it’ll already do a lot of the heavylifting for you on that side, without having to write new software or come up with new protocols.

Same for telephony. Looking into iPXE and other open implementations of the PXE and SIP protocols. Telephony protocols are hard and well-established, reinventing the wheel should be avoided at all costs.

I think there’s a lot of potential in initiatives like these, but only a clear definition of their scope and a clear plan of execution with continuous user feedback can help preventing something like the failure of the early Munich experiments.

Schleswig-Holstein geht voran:

#LibreOffice statt M$ Office
#Linux statt Windows
#Thunderbird statt Outlook
#Nextcloud statt Sharepoint

At the end the workaround didn't work well, because #Nextcloud was sending invitations from synchronized events and that is not wanted.

I ended up writing my own little #iCal #middleware that fetches the original #ics export and republishes it with all event UIDs postfixed by a constant string.
This ensures that fiancée's calendar event UIDs don't collide with received invitations to the same events and I can add them to my own calendar.

Yess, finally. #Nextcloud 28.0.3 fixes broken calendar subscriptions. :nextcloud: ❤️ 🗓️🎉

Can you recommend me a good open (can be payed) #calendar app for #android?
I synchronize tasks and calendars from #NextCloud using #DAVx5.
I successfully replaced GTasks with Tasks.org app, GKeep with NextCloud Notes but still looking for a good calendar app.

Hell, yes. This is nothing but good news. :mastodance:

I've been using Unified Push + Element + Fedilab via Nextcloud and NextPush and it's been remarkably simple and reliable while keeping all that sweet, sweet metadata out of the Goog's hungry clutches. Thank you!

Can't wait for Yunohost to support sliding sync so I can shift to ElementX.

I finally found a workaround for my issue with #NextCloud calendars. #VDirSyncer is the answer.

We share calendars with my fiancée to see each other's program but also invite each other to events that we want the other to attend.
NextCloud sadly has event ids unique across all calendars, thus this use case creates many id collisions between calendars.

When Vdirsyncer copies events from ics to caldav it does not use event ids, but creates own hash id from event content.

I recently learned that it is super easy to run your own #UnifiedPush server if you already have a #NextCloud:
- Install the UnifiedPush Provider app in the NextCloud
- Install NextPush for Android f-droid.org/en/packages/org.un…

Took me like 5 min and now my #Tusky push notifications go through my own server, how cool is that

I was surprised at my phone ringing last night, until I realised I got a real non-test push notification from the experimental fork of Nextcloud made by Niklas Reimer. It uses @unifiedpush in the #foss and @fdroidorg compatible version of Nextcloud, and notifications don't go through Google Services or the Nextcloud Push gateway.

Something very exciting is coming!

Trying #NextCloud again, and, while the client on Windows is less accessible than advertised, it can still be used. For example, only a handful of controls and otherwise are unlabeled in settings and otherwise, but it isn't enough to render the app unusable. It still makes me not wanna put time into trying the iOS app, though. I am glad it supports #WebDav though, which basically is a standard for accessing remote folders and stuff. While I can't quite figure out how syncing works if I only use WebDav, still, this is nice to see. Options are good!
