Symbol identification -- Can anyone tell me what this symbol is? I found it on someone's car.

Marking it sensitive in case it's offensive. I have no idea what it is or what it means. Just asking the #fediverse .. thanks!

Tech people talk about tech too much.

I really really REALLY want to use all the awesome privacy friendly FOSS (and similar) stuff, but I am not a techie person! I don't know how to program, nor do I want to.

And every SINGLE time I try to find out even what thing (OS, program, app, service, etc) to use, let alone how, and I search for it... I get techie-focused answers.

It's complete gibberish to me! Absolutely useless. It makes me feel actively unwelcome even though I really care about using alternatives to Windows, Meta, X and other dystopic nonsense.

For example: I'm like "How do I start a non-enshittified group chat to talk about a thing?" and all the results are technobabble to me. I don't even know if the words they use are supposed to be normal english words or if they refer to orgs or groups or apps or some weird coding wizardry.

I am so lost, every single time.

I stick with it though. But like. I wonder if the tech people realise that this is happening???? Because they probably understand what they're talking about. And they seem to not realise that not everyone does.

I'm not trying to blame or shame anyone or even complaining as such (a little bit complaining, ngl), mostly just giving feedback. This is not an issue with a singe thing but with ALL of it as a whole! Including #GNU #Linux the #Fediverse #Matrix and most #FOSS apps.

My sincere wish: Give non-techie people an EASY TO FIND and easy to read and easy to understand and easy to implement guide about how to use the things as an alternative to using big corporation services, ie, "I just want it to work" and not have to worry about the technical side of things. So one thing I notice about #blind Internet culture: even back on Twitter, and now here in the #fediverse, blind people tend towards having discussions in giant threads, sometimes with as many as 10-12 people in them, that can often stretch on for days. I rarely (if ever) see sighted culture do this. I wonder why? It's not a criticism, it's just interesting to me. Maybe because Discord and other chat apps were historically less #accessible, so blind culture tends to use the fediverse more as a discussion platform? Or maybe it's something UI related that makes it easier for blind folks to track giant threads of doom? The few times I've been involved in this style of discussion with sighted folks, they've become confused and begged for everyone to move to Discord or Slack or somewhere. On the other hand, I rarely see blind people do a single, lengthy post broken up and threaded the way sighted people do, with (1/N) at the end. We tend to just move to instances with longer character limits, or put our long form thoughts on a webpage or something.

Edit to add: I'm pleased to say that this post has now become a perfect example of the thing I was talking about; my last post in the thread included the phrase "transsexual furry puppygirls". It makes me happy that people unfamiliar with what I'm talking about need do nothing more than look at the thread on this post.

Zwei Gegensatzpaare, die mir beim #Seminar themenzentrierter #Interaktion (TZI) nach Ruth #Cohn begegneten.

Es fand unter dem Motto #Bleiben oder #Gehen statt, angelehnt an ein Gedicht von Hilde Domin:

"Man muss weggehen können
und doch sein wie ein Baum..."

Das Seminar war für mich überraschend vielfältig in der Methodik, sehr interessant und sehr intensiv im gegenseitigen Austausch.

Today's AWS debacle is the perfect example of the reason why in the last few years I started to be less enthusiastic about Signal, and more oriented to federated or even P2P solutions like XMPP and Jami. I wrote about it already:

Let's ignore for a second the blind reliance on AWS or any other cloud provider. In a decentralized system, this would not have happened, or at least it would have not impacted so many users.

Yes, I am a cryptographer myself, I know that Signal's encryption is the best. But encryption is not everything. Availability issues, geopolitical troubles, risk of enshittification, limitations on users' freedom to use and control the software lead to a lack of trust, even in a supersecure solution. And I say that with honest admiration for the folks at Signal, who are doing a great job.

May they prove me wrong over and over again.

PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

Y'know, I think people like the Jimmy Truths dude serve as an example of the shortcomings of #Fediverse moderation. This dude has likely made like, hundreds of accounts on dozens of instances, but all the instance owners can do is suspend his account. It's gotten to the point where the dude now keeps coming back with usernames and posts mocking the admins for being unable to permanently remove him, often on the same instance repeatedly.

Larger companies can do things like send cease and desist letters, contact his ISP, hardware ban him, etc a lot easier. They simply have more resources to deal with really tenacious harassers than the average instance admin does. I'm not a networking expert, but I wish there was a way to actually deal with guys like this because as the Fediverse grows in popularity, it's likely more users like this guy will crop up.

I can imagine it being pretty easy for bad actors to focus their attention on a single instance and overwhelm it if there's enough of them. Or people like this dude so persistent and obnoxious that it wears the often volunteer staff down over a long stretch of time.

There seriously needs to be focus put on improving moderation tools for Mastodon before we get to that point.

Not everyone can or should self-host, but there is a lot of middle ground between self-hosting and putting everything on #AWS.

Federated protocols like #XMPP, #ActivityPub, and #SMTP give you choice.

What do you use for Mastodon on Android?

Looking for client that can do multi accounts, remote timeline pinning, remote hashtag feed pinning, drafts, threads auto split and maybe does not look like trash.

Basically I am looking for something as close to @MonaApp as possible.

I tried Fedilab but it is not even close. Phanpy, although a web app is actually great. Now looking for a native app that does as good.
