Super nice #macOS related fixes upcoming in #LibreOfficešŸ’Ŗā¤ļø
macOS dictation had a problem where dictated text would only show, once you make a pause speaking. That was inconvenient as it is much easier to gather your thoughts when spoken text appears immediately.

Another issue that has been ongoing for many many years was, that when you scrolled the sheet in calc and while scrolling was still ongoing pressed cmd for some operation, the zoom level would change. This extremely annoying behavior is no longer.

Both fixes done by #PatrickLuby of #NeoOffice - we should all thank him!

Will take some time for those to trickly down into stable, but 25.2 will bring those fixes for sure.

Liebe Folglinge:

Oh fargh... I just realized how daunting this new venture into #Macbook territory is. I have to learn an entirely new operating system as well as an entirely new DAW. I tend to do better at this sort of thing if I have access to an ordered way of doing things, like some sort of course... lessons, etc. There's somebody I'd love to learn from despite the fact I'm stupidly intimidated by them, but I don't think I can afford the nearly $65 an hour price tag. I've just jumped off a cliff and am plummeting toward unknown waters... Help? #Blind #Musician #MacOS #Logic #Komplete #A11y #Voiceover

Tip of the day: When it comes to #PDF documents, what you see and what is actually there can be two different things. Just because you can read words in the document doesnā€™t mean it is searchable. Or perhaps you have a searchable #PDF but itā€™s still not found in a search in #DEVONthink. I'm not sure in which MacOS version this feature was implemented, but I just set sound to show always on menu bar in system settings > control center, and now it's so much easier and quicker to set my system default sound output! #MacOS

Even though it says my personal voice is ready, when I select it from VoiceOver, on my Mac, it reads with Samantha. However, if I preview the voice in Personal Voice in the system settings > accessibility, it plays the correct voice. What might be the problem? Anyone got it to work in Sequoia? #MacOS #Accessibility

This is the sad reality of #MacOS - with every new version you get the unwelcome surprise of random features in Apple's software that used to work great, but are now broken. It's part of the reason I finally switched to #Linux, which although far from perfect, doesn't tend to give you those kinds of headaches. Plus I got sick of updates that took well over an hour to install, granted my Mac Mini was getting a bit long in the tooth but if I wanted to I could put Linux on that, and I am sure that updates would be much faster. Even installing Linux from scratch takes far less time than installing MacOS!

Wow, if you cut out pages from a completely accessible pdf and make a new pdf using preview on MacOS, Sequoia, it produces completely inaccessible pdf. Also the file size get much bigger. I guess it just makes into pdf with images? It didn't use to do that! #accessibility #macos

Attention all #macOS users of #RemoteIncidentManager:
As you may be aware, Apple is releasing macOS #Sequoia today. Every effort is being made to ensure Remote Incident Managerā€™s readiness for Sequoia as soon as possible. At the time of writing, we are hard at work addressing some challenges brought about by Sequoia. In particular, a new permissions condition currently strongly impacts the long-term viability of unattended sessions on Mac targets. The remote accessibility module on Mac targets has also been impacted. We are currently in talks with Apple support concerning these issues, and it is our hope to have a solution ready in due course. However, at this time, we strongly recommend remaining on macOS Sonoma if at all possible. We further recommend that you advise any Mac users you provide support/training to to hold off on updating to Sequoia as well. We will keep you apprised of further developments, and will give an all clear once Rim can be pronounced fit for use on Sequoia.
We apologize for any inconvenience, and we thank you for your understanding and continued support.

Chrome on the Mac uses less battery than Safari

It's one of the most pervasive common wisdoms shared all over the web, no matter where you go - it's one of those things everybody seems to universally agree on: Chrome will absolutely devastate your battery life on the Mac, and you should really be using Safari, because Apple's special integration magic pixie dust sprinkles ensures Safari sip

I tend to feel like most moaning about Apple is overblown but the latest version of #macos making it excessively hard to run cronjobs might well be the thing that finally pushes me back onto desktop linux (or BSD?) after 12+ years.

The selling point was always that it's a Unix environment with a nice graphical setup but if they're going to make it excessively hard to use the Unix side of things in a normal way then what's the point?

Does anyone have a recommendation for #LlamaCPP alternative to run recent vision language models on Apple Silicon? Llama.cpp doesn't support any of the recent #VLM such as Qwen2-VL, Phi-3.5-vision, Idefics3, InternVL2, Yi-VL, Chameleon, CogVLM2, GLM-4v, etc.
Minicpm-v 2.6 is the only recent model that was added. Maybe time to move on. :( #LLM #multimodal #AppleSilicon #MacOS #ML #AI

1 year ago I switched from Mac to Linux for professional UX design work. In this article, I explain as simply as possible:
- Why I switched to Linux
- How you can do the same.

I cover design-specific concerns like:
- How to use Apple devices like the Magic Mouse in Linux
- Which design tools are available and how to install them
- How to find help if you get stuck

Over the years, I have scoured the internet for various versions of the Mac HIG PDFs. Here is my collection so far.

Some neat ones include HIGs for Mac OS 8 & a preliminary Mac OS X version from the Public Beta.

These HIGs contain general desktop guidelines that still apply today & that you can't find in the modern HIG.

Please retoot! Everyone should read these.

Got very excited by @matt demo of AccessKit integration in #GTK

AccessKit is a cross-platform abstraction for accessibility infrastructure written in Rust.

His work will bring a11y support for GTK on macOS and Windows as well as for the new accessibility architecture on Linux code-named "Newton".

If you use brewā€™s curl on macOS, are you really using it? I installed and had curl setup a couple of years ago. Today it appears that curl was now pointing to Appleā€™s version, which has this issue (daniel.haxx.se/blog/2024/03/08ā€¦). Looks like brew doesnā€™t add a symlink for curl to /opt/homebrew/bin. Running `ln -s /opt/homebrew/opt/curl/bin/curl /opt/homebrew/bin` resolved the issue.

Do you, or have you ever, used a graphical user interface? If you use #Windows, #macOS, or any version of #Linux with a window manager or desktop environment, you can thank Dr. Clarence "Skip" Ellis.

Dr. Ellis worked at Xerox PARC, the research organization that developed the modern GUI. Icons, windows, the mouse, Ethernet-based networking, laser printing - all of these (and more) came out of PARC. Dr. Ellis led the team that created Officetalk, the first program to use icons and the Internet. He got his start at 15 years old showing a local tech company how to reuse punch cards, which was a game-changer back in 1958.

Oh, and he was also the first black man to earn a PhD in Computer Science.

This December, if thereā€™s one tech New Yearā€™s resolution Iā€™d encourage you to have, itā€™s switching to the only remaining ethical web browser, Firefox. According to recent posts on social media, Firefoxā€™s market share is slipping. We should not let that happen. There are two main reasons why switching is important.
A red panda (firefox) resting on a tree branch.ā€œRed Pandaā€ by Mathias Appel is marked with CC0 1.0.

1. Privacy

Firefox is the only major browser not built by a company that makes money from advertising and/or selling your personal data. Thereā€™s been a lot of talk about websites tracking users using cookies, fingerprinting and other nefarious technologies that hurt your privacy. But owning the browser puts Google, Apple and Microsoft in a position where they donā€™t even need those tricks. We need to use browsers that are independent, and right now that means Firefox.

2. Browser engine monopoly

Wikipedia lists four browser engines as being ā€œactiveā€. Browser engines are the bits that take a web pageā€™s code and display it on your screen. Ideally, they conform to the official W3C standards, and display all elements as it describes. If thatā€™s the case, web developers can easily write sites that work on all browsers. No proprietary vendor lock-in nonsense, just glorious open standards at work.

Itā€™s happened before

In the early 2000ā€™s, Internet Explorer had a massive 95% market share. This meant that many sites were only developed for use with IE. Theyā€™d use experimental features that IE supported, in favor of things from the official HTML standard. This was a very bad situation, which hindered the development of the World Wide Web.

Currenty, Chrome, Safari and Edge all use variations of the closely related Webkit and Blink engines. If we want to avoid another browser engine monopoly, we need to support Firefox, and its ā€œGeckoā€ engine.

Firefox is actually really good

If Firefox would be a bad browser, I would not recommend you to switch. Itā€™s fast, has a nice user interface, and feels every bit as modern and elegant as its competition. Iā€™ve been using it as my main browser for a couple of years now, on Linux, Windows, MacOS and Android. As a web developer, I usually have at least three browsers open, but when I go look something up on the web, I pick Firefox.

So please, help save the web by using the best browser out there. Itā€™s an easy thing to do, and it makes a big difference.

Man Reader - my Mac app for reading Terminal command man pages - has finally had its long awaited update. The new version is now waiting for review.

Currently, Man Reader costs USD 4.99 or the local equivalent. I will be increasing this to USD 9.99 when the update is released, so if you want to save some money, buy it now and get the upgrade at half-price.

Interesting to see #gnome post about their #macOS CI builder issues the day after I posted a video about "understanding who your open source constituency is".

It's pretty clear that macOS users are not Gnome's constituency. Fine. But it also goes to show just how much #inkscape, #gimp and other Free Software downstream must also not be their constituency because we're so misaligned on this topic and there's no discussion about our relationship with gnome
