After years of hard work, countless reviews, and tons of community testing, we're happy to share that dynamic buffering has landed in Mutter for GNOME 48!

This improves the smoothness of GNOME across a wide range of hardware and software setups.

Thanks to everyone involved in this collaboration! Special thanks to author Daniel van Vugt from Canonical and reviewers Jonas Ådahl and Michel Dänzer from Red Hat.

Happy I Love Free Software Day! 💕

Unfortunately, this year I could not join nor organize any in-person celebration, BUT of course I want to share my gratitude to the many, countless #FreeSoftware services I don’t merely use, but actually depend on.

Last year, I decided to focus only on #YunoHost, because it would have been crazy to list all the projects I use and I love.

This time, even if I will most certainly forget someone, I am challenging myself to mention all the #LibreSoftware my life is powered by.

Without further ado, THANK YOU to:

  • @yunohost, for powering Nebuchadnezzar
  • @fedora, for running my beloved #Framework laptop
  • @frameworkcomputer, for designing and building repairable, #Linux-friendly and truly open hardware
  • @gnome and @GTK, for being just gorgeous
  • @calyxos (thus @LineageOS), for powering my #Fairphone5
  • #Obtainium, for making me directly download apps on my phone, and @fdroidorg for distributing them
  • #AuroraStore, for proxying the download of apps I am doomed to get from Google Play
  • @element, for developing #Synapse, even though the new proprietary Synapse Pro is VERY PROBLEMATIC AND DISAPPOINTING
  • #Fractal, for being the most beautiful and awesome #Matrix client ever
  • @signalapp, for keeping me connected with the people I love
  • @Mastodon, for also maintaining a feature-packed experimental fork (#GlitchSoc), that is what Pan runs
  • #Tuba and #Moshidon, for being the most beautiful and awesome #Mastodon clients ever
  • #Firefox, for still remaining the best possible #browser choice, despite #Mozilla’s governance messiness
  • @openstreetmap, for allowing us to find the right path, both literally and metaphorically!
  • @organicmaps, for being the simplest, cleanest, yet feature-rich #OSM client and navigation app
  • @protonvpn, for making me browse safely from/to anywhere in the planet and @protonprivacy #ProtonMail, for hosting my email, despite the latest alarming political statements…
  • @libreoffice, for allowing me to draft documents with ease, the last of which was my #CV
  • #LanguageTool, for preventing me from making embarassing spelling mistakes
  • @photoprism, for safely storing and indexing all my photographic memories, on Aby, and for providing stellar and friendly support too!
  • #Actual, for moderating the very likely risk of ending up completely broke, since it forces me to manage my finances consciously and coherently
  • @readeck, for storing and sorting ALL my varied and overwhelming inputs
  • @nextcloud, for storing and synchronizing my data, for its #calendar, its #tasks, and all its awesome apps
  • #Rustdesk, for preventing my friends and family members from going crazy, by allowing me to remotely connect to their devices and directly address the issues they have
  • #Listmonk, for sending out my newsletter
  • @eleventy, for powering all the websites I maintain, above all the virtual representation of my mind, and for being the only reason why I resist and try to continue learning #JavaScript
  • @forgejo, for giving us a chance to truly control and collectively develop the sources of our software, but most importantly @Codeberg, for RESISTING, RESISTING, RESISTING, despite the hatred and attacks nazi assholes throw at them
  • @musicbrainz for keeping music knowledge open and free, and @ListenBrainz for scrobbling the crazy music I listen to
  • The @fsfe, for promoting this celebration and fighting the good fight!

Lastly, but most importantly, the biggest thank you goes to all the free software libraries and dependencies the above mentioned #software are made of/built with, including #C, #JavaScript, #Python, #Rust, and all community-maintained programming languages.

I am super sorry if I forgot someone!

The #Rust for #Linux debacle should be a wake-up call for accelerating safe OS innovation.

#FreeBSD proves you can reuse huge pieces of Linux, with GPU and WiFi drivers ported in kernel space (LinuxKPI) and USB (input, video capture, etc.) drivers running in userspace (webcamd – RIP Hans 😔). This all in a relatively sustainable way with a very small group of developers.

What we need to be building is kind of an inverse of R4L, a "Linux for Rust", a common Driver Depenguinator, a successor to webcamd that would port Linux drivers to a common abstraction layer (like embedded-hal but not so embedded) that would be implemented for both Linux/BSD userspace (w/ CUSE, uinput, UIO, udmabuf, /dev/mem, etc.) and various microkernels like #Redox.

That would be an LSP-style "NxM to N+M" moment for OSdev, instantly making microkernel projects a lot more viable in practice.

Any ideas why #NoMansSky with Proton 9.0 or experimental doesn't appear in PulseAudio or PipeWire applications / patchbays / etc. in #Linux, answers on a postcard please.

It's not enough, they ought to also move from Windows to #Linux or #BSD !

In #Linux, #opensource, #foss communities is #accessibility considered a priority?

It's not a rhetorical or ironic question. I ask this because in the past I have struggled to find #speechtotext apps on Linux while on #macos it is pre-installed.

#linux and #unix users will understand this one 😅

I highly encourage you to try it.
It's my new favorite #Notetaking app. It supports importing txt files, Evernote data & even OneNote data. It works on #iOS, #iPadOS, #MacOS, #Android, #Windows & #Linux. Thus, I'm curious to know if it would run on the #BTSpeak?

Developer applies at @ubuntu, goes through extensive hiring filters and many interviews, gets an offer in hand, accepts the offer, quits their job, only for Canonical to retract the offer.

Don't work for Canonical.

It is once again time to give thanks to Brian Fox, the Black American programmer that has given us BASH and echo! Thank you for your INCREDIBLE contributions to open source software, Unix, and Linux. It literally would not be the same without you. BASH is still absolutely foundational to all computing today. Happy Black History Month to an absolute icon!

Hey #linux#debian people: it’s occurring to me that #rclone might not actually be the best way to do what I’m doing. So: if you had two Debian servers on a vpn, both with 1 gig fiber links to the internet, in cities 100 km apart, how would you go about having shared filesystems between them? Right now I am using rclone mount with sftp. Is there a less janky way?

Experimented yesterday with Fedora’s KDE spin… I was shocked by the level of accessibility, although it wasn’t perfect. My primary issues with it were that I had to use a lot of Orca’s navigation commands to read panels in the systems settings app, and I had major issues with Konsole, the default terminal app. I wasn’t able to read any of the information in that particular apps interface using Orca. I also tried the Fedora workstation edition, which uses Gnome as it’s a desktop environment. Let’s just say that was not worth my time. Had accessibility issues there as well, and surprisingly it was worse than the experience I had with KDE. I know KDE defaults to Wayland, as does Gnome, but KDE’s accessibility implementation seems to be a lot better than what Gnome has under Wayland, with the exceptions I’ve previously mentioned. Incidentally, the X 11 experience with Gnome is actually worse now than it was previously. For example, the terminal app does not even open for me. I should also note that all this is under Fedora 41, so people aren’t confused. #A11Y #Accessibility #Blind #Experiments #Linux #Fedora41 #KDePlasma #Gnome #Wayland #X11

Hello, Mastodon family! It's been a long time coming, but Xubuntu has officially left X behind!

x.com/Xubuntu/status/188675427…

If you're still using X, consider sharing our update to spread awareness. We'll continue to bring you the best of #Xfce and #Linux... all in one place.

(edit: because everything is confusing and nothing makes sense... we're leaving X, formerly known as Twitter, not X11. Wayland is still very much in the future!)

For those encountering random video playback application crash heisenbugs on the open source #AMDgpu #Mesa drivers on #Linux (thankfully, with #Wayland this no longer crashes the entire system), with the suspicious "CS has been rejected" error, here is the bug I reported upstream: gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/me…

The theory is that the DRM's implementation of AMD's Unified Video Decoder does not properly keep track of #Flatpak process IDs. A patch is underway.

#opensource #AMD #Radeon #GStreamer

#linux audio is the fucking worst.

Oof, all this Linux distro hopping I've been doing lately... Currently running Linux Mint with the Mate desktop, but it has some accessibility issues that make it rather annoying to use for certain things. First, there's the issue where Tuba just doesn't want to read out posts to me via Orca, using Dino as an XMPP client is worse from an accessibility perspective & attempting to check some boxes in the Mullvad VPN settings just plain doesn't work while using Orca. I've also tried Fedora 41 with Mate, and that's better accessibility-wise, and I've even tried Ubuntu itself with the Mate desktop, with somewhat better accessibility results. At least I solved the issue of getting video to display on my TV here in the living room, so a 1920x1080 display on a 65 inch TV (I could go as high as 3840x2160 on the TV as it's a 4K TV, but having tiny ass text is just meh...). Going to continue experimenting, and hopefully I can find a distro that will make me happy. Sorry for the long post, but felt like sharing my Linux experiences as a blind person with the fediverse at large. #Linux #DistroHopping #Experimentation #A11Y #Accessibility #Blind #LinuxMint #Fedora #Ubuntu

Ready to move away from Big Tech?

There are options. Choosing those options will require you to learn something new, but that is a small cost to pay to get away from Big Tech, IMHO

Here are my suggestions. Feel free to add your own:

1. Browser : Vivaldi. That one is a given for me, obviously.

2. Mail client : Vivaldi. You may wonder why you need a mail client, but besides the technical benefits, it makes it a lot easier to move between mail services or even use more than one.

3. Mail service : Fastmail. They have been around for a long time.

4. Office software : Libre Office.

5. Video conference : Whereby.

6. Desktop OS : Linux.

7. Social : Mastodon and the Fediverse in general.

As said, I am eager to hear what you are using to help me move away from Big Tech as well. Always looking for new things to try.

my current little joys besides my family and kids are. Books about #lisp, common lisp itself with #sbcl, #xfce , #linux #debian and old school server side rendered #web sites. And all the web standards there are like html css and js. We have come a long way to have those great tech that lasted so long. I'm really thankful for all those projects and effort that got into it. Please lets make those tools accessible for everyone and simple in design. All that comes after us will have a bad time if we embrace all this complex cloud and build tools to just build simple software. Software is made for humans not mashines. Thanks for listening stay safe enjoy life and the little things and all that is.

Are there any #Linux, #dns or #SSL gurus or someone familiar with #Gotosocial out there who can lend me a hand?
I have a little VPS. I have downloaded Gotosocial. I have set up the conf file, but I'm falling afoul of Letsencrypt and my SSL isn't working.

I want to spin up a GTS so people can follow my book reviews on the fediverse or by RSS rather than having to go to the web, it's a much more fun and interactive place than static web pages.

JIT isn't just for games! I just ran Arch Linux, with sound, on my iPhone! I used VoiceOver screen recognition to read the screen, then used espeak once I got that installed. I couldn't figure out how to enable Speakup, so I'll leave that for future me to tinker with. I'd be curious to know if any other blind people have used UTM, on the Mac maybe, and have some Windows VM's or a Windows install ISO that talks. I can probably only handle up to Windows 7 or so on this iPhone. But it would be cool to see if it's possible!

More people need to leave too.

Via Tom's Hardware: Facebook flags Linux topics as 'cybersecurity threats' — posts and users being blocked

Does this mean that Meta/Facebook is going to also ban mentions of:

  • #Android phones?
  • #SteamDeck / #SteamOS?
  • Most "smart" cars, TV's, appliances?
  • Most (somewhere around 90 percent) of the top Websites?
  • Talk of Meta's own internal infrastructure?

What an absolutely asinine thing to do. Linux is incredibly prevalent in the technology landscape today. Yes, #linux on the desktop is a small percentage of the overall devices on the market today. However, linux usage in #embedded, #server, and #appliance applications is to a level where censoring references to it is insanity.

The irony of all of this? Zuckerfaces recent pull back of moderation on Meta's sites.... Meaning it's now okay to bash socially vulnerable populations, spread tons of mis-information on many social and political topics... But linux?"Oh no! That's a #CyberSecurity threat!"

This reeks of political #tomfoolery. I won't be surprised if it's eventually revealed that our new overlords put pressure on #Meta to #censor linux.

The #ntsync "driver" to handle Windows locking types enabling #Wine to work much better on many workloads (i.e. games) was merged as part of the main Char/Misc/IIO driver updates for #Linux 6.14:
