A brief reminder that our Call for Presentations for the next #id24 (scheduled for 12 September 2024) is still open until 7 June https://inclusivedesign24.org/2024/

(and a small note: have an idea for a talk, but perhaps you're not comfortable doing a whole presentation in English? let us know anyway ... in the past we've had a few presentations in other languages, so it's not necessarily a hindrance)

Happy 25 years of WCAG!

Trying to understand human psychology a bit here, boosts for reach are very much appreciated.

When you post an image without alt text, and someone replies with the image description for you to use, what is your typical reaction?

#accessibility #a11y #AltText #ImageDescriptions

  • Thank the person and add the alt text (44%, 95 votes)
  • Use the alt text, don't respond (2%, 6 votes)
  • Ignore the person (7%, 16 votes)
  • Block the person (0%, 2 votes)
  • Explain why you don't add alt text (0%, 1 vote)
  • Start a big fight (0%, 0 votes)
  • I never forget alt text (41%, 88 votes)
  • Something else? (2%, 6 votes)
214 voters. Poll end: 1 day ago

@thunderbird there is no option to show avatars in the message list, right? #thunderbird

Especially with a lot of messages per day, the messages list is just noise to me. Avatars would be great to reduce cognitive overhead. #ux #a11y

The address to email for #sonos #accessibility complaints seems to be ceo@sonos.com. I doubt the CEO reads these emails himself, but hopefully emails from multiple different folks on the subject of #a11y with voiceover will get some attention.

“The reasons why use of the placeholder attribute as the only means of providing a user readable prompt for a form control is deficient UX, are voluminous. It is frustrating having to rehash this discussion endlessly.”

Was just reminded that you can use *no* headings in a web page and automated tests will pass you for WCAG compliance.

You can't use the wrong heading structure if you use no headings at all! Automated tests can't tell where the structure needs to be broken up into sections because they would have to understand the nature of the content. #a11y

#Barrierefreiheit #a11y #Inklusion

Why are my live regions not working? by @patrick_h_lauke

"Live regions have a reputation for being "flaky" and inconsistent. While this can be attributed in part to shortcomings in current implementations, the problem can also be caused by developers misunderstanding how live regions are intended to work."

A few extra seconds of your time it takes to add a good image description can really improve someone's day.

"To a totally blind person like me it means a lot to have a picture in my mind of your images, especially the animal pics."

"I don't know what it is, but as a blind user it's making me emotional to be able to actually interact with content."

The Stardew Access docs have finally been updated with fabulous new guides and config references. There's now a guide for constructing farm buildings with the updated tile viewer. No more buildsel command! Also character customization has been greatly improved. It's looking really good for the next release, but you can load the beta right now if you can't wait to play Stardew 1.6.

I keep forgetting to mention that I am doing a workshop at #AccessU in a couple weeks:

#SocialCoop has been discussing whether to disable images on May 16 and October 10 for #WorldSightDay, as suggested here https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/112275637561897034.

One concern raised about this proposal is that it is symbolic and might not do anything to improve the lives of people with visual impairments.

I would like to hear perspectives from people with visual impairments on whether this kind of action is helpful.

(boosts welcome; please only reply if you rely on alt text)

If you're #blind, #VisuallyImpaired, or otherwise rely on #AssistiveTecnhologies and #AltText, your thoughts on this proposal to temporarily disable images across the fediverse to highlight the importance of well-written image descriptions would be very much appreciated.

Even if you don't code, this is essay presents a solid case on why #AI can't be relied on to replace work requiring any degree of empathy and nuanced understanding

Specifically, if you're building accessible web-based experiences, @hdv explains why "outsourcing" this work create more harm than good and offers some better alternatives to focus on instead (hint: invest in a #DesignSystem)

The fact that #a11y nowadays is better in #videogames than on #linux is not a compliment to videogames

Just rebooted and I’m up and running with Fedora Silverblue 40.

(Just tried reinstalling mozilla-openh264 – so videos work in Firefox – but it failed with the same error. Not a big deal, I’m using @Vivaldi as my main browser these days anyway and I guess the Fedora folks will fix this in time.)

More importantly, I wonder if the screen reader has been fixed yet. (Yes, Fedora ships with a broken screen reader.)

#Fedora #fedora40 #Silverblue #upgrade #mozilla #OpenH264 #rpmOstree #error #a11y

Just checked and yes, the screen reader is still broken in Fedora 40. (Cannot be controlled; keyboard shortcuts/modifier key doesn’t work.)

So this is yet another release where the screen reader is broken by default.

It’s amazing to me that this is not a showstopper.

Is anyone free to help the developer of sway notification center out? I have opened an issue about sway notification center's accessibility regressions in the notification list, and I have also suggested that when the notification appears, the accessible event is fired. The dev doesn't know how to do this however, so any input or PR's that mention this issue would be greatly appreciated! https://github.com/ErikReider/SwayNotificationCenter/issues/404
If we get this sorted, we will have a fully accessible notification daemon for all wlroots based compositors, which will soon include XFCE. This could be the Wayland equivalent of notification-daemon for X11, but even better if the GTK notification centre list can be fixed up too. #Linux #accessibility #a11y

Is there an email marketing tool or technique reason why I'm seeing an increasing number of HTML emails where pretty much all of the informative content is linked images rather than part of the email text?

This is a crime against accessibility.

‘When security and accessibility clash: why are banking applications so inaccessible?’
https://www.nicchan.me/blog/when-security-and-accessibility-clash/

I once did a presentation for a bank client explaining all the ways preventing paste disables users.

The response: “But we have to, for security.” No ability to justify beyond that, no consideration of user impact, no offer of supporting data.

Security theater is often used to abrogate #accessibility requirements. #a11y

We're #hiring a remote, full-stack #Drupal developer! We build Drupal & WordPress websites for nonprofits, with a content strategy & #a11y focus. We have a 35-hour work week, 5 weeks+ paid time off annually to start, & an intentionally-small, sweet, collaborative team. We are woman- and queer*-owned and led.

Must be US-based b/c we're small don't @ me we are doing our best I assure you.

*That's me, I'm the queer co-owner.

@WestphalDenn @Talon I don't think it's that catastrophic as this sounds any more. I can't say this is not happening but it's very rare. I am on @GNOME . If I get an unresponsive experience I can press alt+F2, type in orca --replace and the screen reader comes back. I can even bind this to a global keyboard shortcut.
When I am leaving my office I am often closing some 15 browser windows, some 10 terminal windows, about 5 different files open in the text editor.
Most used apps on my desktop include #Firefox #Thunderbird file manager (pcmanfm or nautilus), Gedit, VLC media player, electron based apps such as teamsforlinux, losslesscut and gnome-terminal.
Next I'm using @LibreOffice, I am also using #Emacs with #speechd-el a little and finally some other less frequently used apps.
As for the #TTS or the #audio setup I am using #RHVoice, speech-dispatcher and @PipeWire Project .
Finally with @Matt Campbell and @Lukáš Tyrychtr we do have tallented visually disabled developers dogfooding or partially dog fooding so let me finish this post by saying it really is gold era of a linux #a11y and we are looking forward for what it brings us in the future.
