didn't know this before, and didn't have to because i haven't installed windows in the past 10 years. but for those who need to do this, this workaround should be known:
Thankfully, there remains another way to install Windows 11 without a Microsoft account. When you’re at the log-in screen, you can hit Shift + F10 and type OOBE/BYPASSNRO, which will let you create a local account instead if you do not have an internet connection (so disconnect the internet for this).
#computer #internet #instgallation #windows #windows11 #linux
a@a.com is redundant but Shift + F10 OOBE/BYPASSNRO comes to the rescue.
ICQ is closing down. It was really at its height in 2000 and that is when we integrated ICQ into Opera. We made a small (5k) client and it worked really well.
AOL had purchased ICQ and they were concerned about MSN taking users from them by connecting to their service, so they stopped supporting 3rd party clients. We contacted them, to see if they would make an exception for us, but they did not.
They said that if we removed our 5k client, we could maybe discuss bundling their client, but it was bigger than Opera, so that was not going to happen.
The best ways to improve opsec against coercion are to:
- Limit what can be taken (reduce what’s stored on a device).
- Fake what you do have: use duress passwords or secondary devices.
- Last resort: use a hardware key that’s deliberately easy to lose or break, so there’s potentially no key to give up in a rubber-hose attack.
There’s overlap between the three. A duress password temporarily limits what’s stored on a device, and losing a decryption key is more or less the same as instantly wiping encrypted data to reduce what you have to offer. All come down to having less data to give when coerced into giving what you have. Operating systems should also obey this principle by storing as little offline data as possible, and providing duress safeguards for what must be stored.
Windows Recall captures an amount of offline telemetry comparable to parental-control apps often used to control human trafficking victims: the data encompass everything potential victims do on their machines, without any duress protections. Presenting such a feature as opt-out seems like it’s almost designed to hurt victims.
The decision-makers behind features like Recall, or invasive child-monitoring spyware, have likely never experienced this type of abuse. Or perhaps they are the abusive party at home.

Watching this with interest: first #AI (ChatGPT) based screen
reader:typeahead.ai/
This could change the screen reader paradigm and I'll try the #Windows version when it's available, but I worry that using it for work and remaining #GDPR compliant will not be possible.
This also heralds a much bigger paradigm change - the UI for everyone will change and the GUI as we know it may well disappear.

Do you, or have you ever, used a graphical user interface? If you use #Windows, #macOS, or any version of #Linux with a window manager or desktop environment, you can thank Dr. Clarence "Skip" Ellis.
Dr. Ellis worked at Xerox PARC, the research organization that developed the modern GUI. Icons, windows, the mouse, Ethernet-based networking, laser printing - all of these (and more) came out of PARC. Dr. Ellis led the team that created Officetalk, the first program to use icons and the Internet. He got his start at 15 years old showing a local tech company how to reuse punch cards, which was a game-changer back in 1958.
Oh, and he was also the first black man to earn a PhD in Computer Science.

There are two ways to add your keys to #FileZilla.
You can add your keys inside the "Site Manager":
Protocol:
In the settings panel for a given site select sFTP:
Add the user name to log onto the server:
Browse for the .ppk you want to add and select it:
FileZilla offers you also to add .pem (privkey.pem) files, that's the #puTTy option for a file containing only the extracted private key of keyfile.ppk. At the same time FileZilla doesn't read/accept .pem files so it will prompt you to transform it into a .ppk file. If your .ppk is protected by a password (it should be), you get prompted to insert the password.
It is not clear if the newly created .ppk file from the .pem file by FileZilla is protected with the same password. It doesn't feel like that.
Save the changes and connect to your server.
The other option to add your key to FileZilla is by adding it directly to the main settings.
Choose SFTP and select the "Add key file" tab:
Add the key file and save.
If you use the input fields and quick connect options of the main FileZilla window, the keys saved in settings will be retrieved.
friendica VPS setup on ubuntu 22.04 LTS
Hi,
I'm working on my first #friendica #VPS installation, here you'll find my initial post about general thoughts like what distro to use, size and costs.
I'm using the tutorial "creating a friendica server - ubuntu" by @Hank G ☑️.
As of now I'm doing well in the process and want to start this post to document differences and questions while installing the server.
This server is going to host an already existing friendica node I have to move from another hosting provider. That means that for example the DB doesn't have to be created from scratch but moved and other smaller details.
I will try to address the different steps of installation in answers to this post and appreciate help, ideas and observations.
I'm doing this from a #linux desktop environment from the console but there shouldn't be differences if you want to do this from a #windows machine.
I've written a #tutorial on how to program #accessible #native #gui #windows applications in #rust using the native-windows-gui library: modulus.isonomia.net/tech/nwg/

Microsoft wants to move Windows fully to the cloud
Microsoft’s long-term ambition with Windows is to move the OS to the cloud. Windows 365 is just the beginning on the commercial side, with plans to get consumers into a cloud version of Windows eventually.Tom Warren (The Verge)
Greetings!
Well, after finding out that #WhaleBird
github.com/h3poteto/whalebird-…is a decent enough accessible MacOS client for use with #Misskey, you'll see me post on here from time to time now as well! Most of the time I'll still be posting on my Mastodon account, though watch this space! Three-Thousand characters is more than i ever would need myself, but I'll take it!
For users of #VoiceOver, the 'J' & 'k' keys currently do not speak under the curssor what the post is, thus nornal VO commands for now are necessary. Definitely a client for #Blind users to check out though!
NB. As noted among the GitHub page, WhaleBird is also available for #Windows and #Linux, though I'll leave those builds to you guys!

Been working on a new project the last couple of months and it's finally ready for beta release!
#Fedimeister is a #Java based #Mastodon client (available for #Linux, #Windows and #MacOS under the Apache #opensource license) with a focus on #writing and #journalism. Features:
* Break long texts into threads
* Scheduled posting
* Hashtag research
* #Twitter quote tweeting emulation
Trying out this RDP based desktop sharing to see if I can use #gnome @gnome for remote work.
It's clunky compared to XForward. An entire desktop required and the shared computer is basically useless to anyone else since it won't share a desktop that's not showing on the monitor in the physical space.
Bit of a leap backwards if I'm being honest. Every time #linux copies #Windows or #MacOS I get this sinking feeling that we've just given up being great and are settling for good enough.
What we need:
1. The NVDA Speech Logger addon available at:
github.com/opensourcesys/speec…
2. The following iOS shortcut:
icloud.com/shortcuts/999808bd1…
How to use:
1. Install both: the addon in your NVDA and the shortcut in your shortcuts respectively.
2. In NVDA's settings head over to the Speech Logger category and set the output path to your Dropbox root (that's what the shortcut assumes you're using, feel free to modify as needed);
3. Start logging the local speech with the assigned gesture (by default NVDA+alt+l);
4. Assuming the shortcut is configured properly (Dropbox authorized and all that jazz), launch it and a viewer will pop up with the fresh version of the log file at the time.
One nuissance I've found with this is that the viewer overlay will not surround the VO gestures so you need to focus it first through exploration before you can start reading the log. Also the gestures for the first and last item on the screen will move you to whatever else should be on your screen right now so you have to explore again to close the viewer. I assume that's a VO bug.
Also bear in mind that, while logging, anything your PC says will ultimately land in a regular text file and nothing apart from your Dropbox account is protecting it. Use with caution.
Feel free to suggest feedback.

As #Linux users, or even as #Windows users, we often hear a lot of preconceived notions, like "Linux is faster", or "Windows has better battery life".
Well, I decided to quantify all of it in a complete benchmark between Windows 11 and #ubuntu
CPU and GPU benchmarks, disk speeds, thermals, internet speeds, gaming benchmarks, battery life, I looked at everything on the same device, and the conclusions were... surprising:
