If anyone uses Android with TalkBack and the onscreen Braille keyboard, please try to reproduce and report this issue:

In Talkback, if onscreen keyboard echo is set to words, and a word with punctuation after it is typed, TalkBack does not read the word when Space is typed. Similarly, if an emoticon is typed, like ":)" nothing is spoken when Space is typed.

Steps to reproduce:

• Turn on TalkBack, and open TalkBack settings by tapping once with three fingers. Set up the TalkBack Braille keyboard under the Braille section.
• Go to Verbosity settings, then the keyboard echo option for onscreen keyboards, and set it to "words."
Now, open a text box, turn on the TalkBack Braille Keyboard, and type something like "this is a test." Note the period after test. Then, swipe right with one finger to enter a space.

Expected results:

TalkBack should read "this" "is" "a" "test period."

Actual results:

TalkBack reads "this" "is" "a" and is silent after test is written.

I also put it up on Google's issue tracker if anyone wants to start it.

#XMPP enthusiasts out there: what would you say the ultimate Achilles heel of the XMPP ecosystem is, at present? Fragmentation of clients? What?

My sense is that it's this: when one goes to store an XMPP address in one's addressbook, there doesn't seem to be standard way to store an XMPP address. #Android doesn't have that as an allowable field, and #Thunderbird and #Nextcloud have an "Instant Messaging" field, where the type can be set to "XMPP". But are these two compatible with each other when trying to sync between them? Edit: Yes, but there's a catch: *the XMPP address must be prefixed with "xmpp:"*

So "user@foo.bar" is not an OK XMPP address, but "xmpp:user@foo.bar" is.

Then to make matters worse, now there's a wish to change the labeling of "XMPP Address" to "Chat ID": gultsch.social/@daniel/1140129…

It might be a long time before the address synchy-ness ever works again between Android <-> #Davx5 <-> Nextcloud <->Thunderbird

Note: Android allows a "Jabber" type for an IM address, where you *don't* prefix the address with "xmpp:".

(#DeltaChat gets to gloat hard here, as they have plain-old email addresses)

Absolutely nobody knows what an XMPP address is, so just go ahead and call it a:

Happy I Love Free Software Day! 💕

Unfortunately, this year I could not join nor organize any in-person celebration, BUT of course I want to share my gratitude to the many, countless #FreeSoftware services I don’t merely use, but actually depend on.

Last year, I decided to focus only on #YunoHost, because it would have been crazy to list all the projects I use and I love.

This time, even if I will most certainly forget someone, I am challenging myself to mention all the #LibreSoftware my life is powered by.

Without further ado, THANK YOU to:

  • @yunohost, for powering Nebuchadnezzar
  • @fedora, for running my beloved #Framework laptop
  • @frameworkcomputer, for designing and building repairable, #Linux-friendly and truly open hardware
  • @gnome and @GTK, for being just gorgeous
  • @calyxos (thus @LineageOS), for powering my #Fairphone5
  • #Obtainium, for making me directly download apps on my phone, and @fdroidorg for distributing them
  • #AuroraStore, for proxying the download of apps I am doomed to get from Google Play
  • @element, for developing #Synapse, even though the new proprietary Synapse Pro is VERY PROBLEMATIC AND DISAPPOINTING
  • #Fractal, for being the most beautiful and awesome #Matrix client ever
  • @signalapp, for keeping me connected with the people I love
  • @Mastodon, for also maintaining a feature-packed experimental fork (#GlitchSoc), that is what Pan runs
  • #Tuba and #Moshidon, for being the most beautiful and awesome #Mastodon clients ever
  • #Firefox, for still remaining the best possible #browser choice, despite #Mozilla’s governance messiness
  • @openstreetmap, for allowing us to find the right path, both literally and metaphorically!
  • @organicmaps, for being the simplest, cleanest, yet feature-rich #OSM client and navigation app
  • @protonvpn, for making me browse safely from/to anywhere in the planet and @protonprivacy #ProtonMail, for hosting my email, despite the latest alarming political statements…
  • @libreoffice, for allowing me to draft documents with ease, the last of which was my #CV
  • #LanguageTool, for preventing me from making embarassing spelling mistakes
  • @photoprism, for safely storing and indexing all my photographic memories, on Aby, and for providing stellar and friendly support too!
  • #Actual, for moderating the very likely risk of ending up completely broke, since it forces me to manage my finances consciously and coherently
  • @readeck, for storing and sorting ALL my varied and overwhelming inputs
  • @nextcloud, for storing and synchronizing my data, for its #calendar, its #tasks, and all its awesome apps
  • #Rustdesk, for preventing my friends and family members from going crazy, by allowing me to remotely connect to their devices and directly address the issues they have
  • #Listmonk, for sending out my newsletter
  • @eleventy, for powering all the websites I maintain, above all the virtual representation of my mind, and for being the only reason why I resist and try to continue learning #JavaScript
  • @forgejo, for giving us a chance to truly control and collectively develop the sources of our software, but most importantly @Codeberg, for RESISTING, RESISTING, RESISTING, despite the hatred and attacks nazi assholes throw at them
  • @musicbrainz for keeping music knowledge open and free, and @ListenBrainz for scrobbling the crazy music I listen to
  • The @fsfe, for promoting this celebration and fighting the good fight!

Lastly, but most importantly, the biggest thank you goes to all the free software libraries and dependencies the above mentioned #software are made of/built with, including #C, #JavaScript, #Python, #Rust, and all community-maintained programming languages.

I am super sorry if I forgot someone!

it is extraordinary, how #deltachat #android, over all the years, with all the #features added, did manage not to grow in size

- version 1.0 from 2019 was 64 mb
- today's 1.54 is 53 mb :)

Please boost for reach:

I wonder if Fedi has anyone who works at OnePlus, or knows any way of getting in touch with a human there that can help fix some accessibility issues? I got my OnePlus phone yesterday, and love the hardware, the customizability, and the haptic motor. It's maybe the only Android phone right now that comes with the option to set phone audio to the earpiece when you hold the phone to your ear. And TalkBack is amazingly responsive on it. However, there are accessibility issues, like TalkBack's support for the fingerprint sensor being broken so that it always instructs me to move my finger up, no matter where it is around the sensor, suggested apps on the recent apps screen not always showing the correct app that will be launched, and volume and brightness sliders in quick settings not working correctly with TalkBack. I'm not sure if OnePlus has any accessibility staff, but since they're using AudioEye on their website, I'd guess they have at least thought of accessibility slightly, even if there are often no audio captchas so I can't log into my OnePlus account. Overall though, it's a great phone and may be the one that allows me to settle into Android full time.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna stick with FydeOS for a bit... Most of what I do is on the web anyway & for those things that actually require an app (Email, Matrix & XMPP for example) I've got access to Android apps via F-Droid & the Play Store. Bonus is that I can use a local account with FydeOS (which you can't do with ChromeOS/ChromeOS Flex, btw) and minimize what data Google collects about me. Only sources of data left are the Play Store & YouTube as the majority of Android apps I've installed within FydeOS were obtained via F-Droid. I can also use Linux apps, but really haven't had a need for that subsystem of FydeOS yet. #FydeOS #Chromium #Android #FDroidApp

Anyone have any issues using the app in #android? I can't download any books because the location for the downloads can't be set properly.

Quoting a Mastodon post by GrapheneOS:
"The app doesn't provide client-side scanning used to report things to Google or anyone else. It provides on-device machine learning models usable by applications to classify content as being spam, scams, malware, etc. This allows apps to check content locally without sharing it with a service and mark it with warnings for users."

You remember #Apple scanning all images on your #mobile device?

If you have an #Android #phone, a new app that doesn't appear in your menu has been automatically and silently installed (or soon will be) by #Google. It is called #AndroidSystemSafetyCore and does exactly the same - scan all images on your device as well as all incoming ones (via messaging). The new spin is that it does so "to protect your #privacy".

You can uninstall this app safely via System -> Apps.

developers.google.com/android/…

I highly encourage you to try it.
It's my new favorite #Notetaking app. It supports importing txt files, Evernote data & even OneNote data. It works on #iOS, #iPadOS, #MacOS, #Android, #Windows & #Linux. Thus, I'm curious to know if it would run on the #BTSpeak?

Just a reminder, especially in this wild time we live in. DO NOT INSTALL WORK MDM ON YOUR PERSONAL DEVICE.
If your work requires Microsoft Intune or similar MDM, to get email/teams/slack. don't accept it. It opens your device up for them to access private data and disable/delete your phone (even if they say they wont, they can)

Samsung S25 Ultra demo unit observations:
1. Ships with TalkBack 15.1 out of the box.
2. Interestingly, Samsung TalkBack lacks an option to enable or disable Gemini’s online image descriptions, yet the "Describe Image" command works, suggesting it's enabled by default. The TalkBack tutorial even includes an image sample and usage instructions.
3. The default US English female Samsung voice sounds more natural, clearer, and less depressed compared to my S24 Ultra experience.
4. Face detection in the Samsung Camera app remains unchanged, meaning the camera experience still falls short of the Pixel Camera app for accessibility as it doesn't offer object detection or Auto image capturing.
5. Accessibility volume is improved—better bass and clarity than the S24 Ultra—but still lacks the full, rich Media volume quality screen reader users deserve. Some odd frequency shifts persist.
6. Scrolling long lists still lags, as expected with TalkBack.
7. Holding the Side button opens a menu with options like "Ask about the current item," "Ask Gemini," "Talk with Gemini Live," and "Ask a question"—seemingly a blend of Bixby and Gemini.
#Android #Accessibility

If you're using a physical keyboard on your Android device and prefer to use a different launcher, you can still use the keyboard shortcuts that your device offers. Speaking for Samsung, I can still use the native keyboard shortcuts using Nova Launcher as my home screen replacement #Android #A11y

Via Tom's Hardware: Facebook flags Linux topics as 'cybersecurity threats' — posts and users being blocked

Does this mean that Meta/Facebook is going to also ban mentions of:

  • #Android phones?
  • #SteamDeck / #SteamOS?
  • Most "smart" cars, TV's, appliances?
  • Most (somewhere around 90 percent) of the top Websites?
  • Talk of Meta's own internal infrastructure?

What an absolutely asinine thing to do. Linux is incredibly prevalent in the technology landscape today. Yes, #linux on the desktop is a small percentage of the overall devices on the market today. However, linux usage in #embedded, #server, and #appliance applications is to a level where censoring references to it is insanity.

The irony of all of this? Zuckerfaces recent pull back of moderation on Meta's sites.... Meaning it's now okay to bash socially vulnerable populations, spread tons of mis-information on many social and political topics... But linux?"Oh no! That's a #CyberSecurity threat!"

This reeks of political #tomfoolery. I won't be surprised if it's eventually revealed that our new overlords put pressure on #Meta to #censor linux.
