New germinating idea: Accessibility Excellence. Now, I'm sure people like @JonathanMosen have made approximately 9001 podcast episodes about this, but in the wake of Google's own AI gallery app, which lets people use AI models offline on their phone including image description and audio transcription, released with no accessibility, I think we need to converge as a community on an idea of accessibility excellence. We need to dismiss ads of a company that seeks to prop us up to show how their stuff is accessible, even though there is clearly a systemic issue of inaccessibility in the company. Gemini on iOS is more accessible than Gemini on Android. TalkBack still doesn't have basic screen reader features like a pronunciation dictionary and support for all features on even older Braille displays like the Braille Edge. Google Play Books does not automatically scroll pages while reading a book, like Apple Books, Kindle, and many other book reading apps on iOS do. Even Kindle on Android does this, but Google's own app doesn't. Gmail on Android has no way to navigate between messages in a conversation or thread, while Apple's Mail app can, making reading threads of email on iOS fast and easy. There is no way on Android to have TalkBack suspend touch interaction in apps, so gamers still have to turn off the screen reader to play accessible games. Apple users haven't had to do that in years. Even though there are tags on the Play Store for apps accessible with TalkBack, the idea has fallen by the wayside like so many other accessibility ideas that Google forgot and Apple has just embarked upon with accessibility labels. These aren't vibes, or subjective feelings. Like I said in my most recent Accessible Android article, how can we expect small companies or indie developers to make their apps accessible, when we can't get Google to listen to us and take us seriously? We need to take each others' accessibility concerns seriously, especially for Braille. Many people who are blind use Android, yes. Many people like it. And that's okay. But it could, and should, be so much better. There should be competition between these company's accessibility departments, not a kind of sluggish, aimless ambling around in concentric circles by one while the other presses ahead. Yes, TalkBack's Gemini AI descriptions are great, and when I use my Android phone, it's a very attractive feature. Perhaps next year VoiceOver will get something like it.

We shouldn't give any of these huge corporations an inch of duct tape accessibility, because once it's done, they'll build upon that poor foundation, and the whole structure will be so much less effective than it needs to be. Accessibility should be solid, no matter what company does it. But if a screen reader comes with a device, and is made by the company that makes the OS, there's no excuse for rickety accessibility.

Today's random throwback: in the 80's, the Polish TV broadcast programme which explained different scientific phenomena and technological advancements, often using imported TV material from abroad, e.g. the UK. Turns out there was an episode from the beginning of 1983 on blindness tech at the time. The whole thing is in Polish but contains sounds of the first electronic Braille typewriter manufactured in Poland, an experimental speech synthesizer, a system to read punchcards, a calculator beeping numbers in a Morse-like system and others. Would be fun to have an English translation and audiodescription for it some day. youtu.be/HQyFfMpWvRk #Blind #Accessiblity #Retro #Tech

Today I learned that fuzzy logic came to be thanks to an Iranian scientist, Lotfi A. Zadeh. Fuzzy mathematics play an important role in so many appliances and new tech, including your rice cooker and the AI you use daily.
Fuzzy logic allows computers to work with a degrees of truth rather than 1/0 or true/false. Fuzzy mathematics added a little humanity to our machines.
Think about it! We say the weather is warm, really hot, kind of cool, extremely cold, ETC. There's no just hot/cold. Machines can understand this using the fuzzy logic.
In simpler words, fuzzy logic is designed to mimic human reasoning by handling imprecise information.
I am proud of my country and my people, but I should emphasize that my current government is definitely not my people.

Microsoft has added COPILOT AI to Excel — but give it a miss if you use the spreadsheet software for numerical calculations or in scenarios with legal regulatory and compliance implications because COPILOT "can give incorrect responses," the company warns. Here's more from @theverge.

***infosec specialists are needed in the resistance ***

The world needs tech security specialists to run workshops at public libraries for all ages & abilities to remove spyware, AI, reduce surveillance, understand the issues, & for more advanced, move to Linux, degooglefy, etc.

Libraries will pay good wages for these workshops.
If you have these skills, please consider offering them.

The weather's cloudy a lukewarm. Perfect for today's stream where I create a "yes, but no" resource for everyone who tells me to just switch to #linux :P
Nah but seriously we'll look at a number of first-time experiences (install, initial boot into the OS ec.) of various popular and less popular distros. I will comment on the #accessibility considerations primarily for #screenReader users and I'm sure other things'll come up. People continue to think about #AI in terms of #2010s computing, which is part of the reason everyone gets it wrong whether they're #antiAI or #tech bros.

Look, we had 8GB of #ram as the standard for a decade. The standard was set in 2014, and in 2015 #AlphaGo beat a human at #Go.

Why? Because, #hardware lags #software - in #economic terms: supply follows demand, but demand can not create its own supply.

It takes 3 years for a new chip to go through the #technological readiness levels and be released.

It takes 5 years for a new #chip architecture. E.g. the #Zen architecture was conceived in 2012, and released in 2017.

It takes 10 years for a new type of technology, like a #GPU.

Now, AlphaGo needed a lot of RAM, so how did it stagnate for a decade after doubling every two years before that?

In 2007 the #Iphone was released. #Computers were all becoming smaller, #energy #efficiency was becoming paramount, and everything was moving to the #cloud.

In 2017, most people used their computer for a few applications and a web browser. But also in 2017, companies were starting to build #technology for AI, as it was becoming increasingly important.

Five years after that, we're in the #pandemic lockdowns, and people are buying more powerful computers, we have #LLM, and companies are beginning to jack up the const of cloud services.

#Apple releases chips with large amounts of unified #memory, #ChatGPT starts to break the internet, and in 2025, GPU growth continues to outpace CPU growth, and in 2025 you have a competitor to Apple's unified memory.

The era of cloud computing and surfing the #web is dead.

The hype of multi-trillion parameter #LLMs making #AGI is a fantasy. There isn't enough power to do that, there aren't enough chips, it's already too expensive.

What _is_ coming is AI tech performing well and running locally without the cloud. AI Tech is _not_ just chatbots and #aiart. It's going to change what you can do with your #computer.

There's a growing movement on the #fedi that wants people to switch away from Big (US-based) Tech and towards #FOSS alternatives like #Linux, alternatives to #google, #Microsoft, #dropbox etc.
For #screenReader users, that might not be as simple as all that due to #accessibility reasons. This weekend's IC_Null stream aims to dig into this, but I need your help. What tools, services etc. should I look at from an #accessibility perspective? Anyone here who needs their tools evaluated? Anyone here who's curious about a particular tool or suite of tools? Let me know and I'll add it to the list. Anything goes. #selfHosting #blind #tech #EU

Today on the degoogling journey: How can I make the best out of a Pixel's camera on #GrapheneOS? 🤔

The default camera app doesn't begin to exploit all the nice things that the Pixel camera hardware can do, and I do want nice things. 😁

Installing the Google camera means having to install the Google gallery to open the pictures and more google crap, and I don't want to go to a sandbox profile every time I'd like to take a picture.

Thanks a million in advance!

Eagle-eyed product developer @parkerortolani spotted something in Apple's WWDC 2025 presentation: Mastodon. During designer Billy Sorrentino's section on visual intelligence, there's a clear shot of @ivory. "It was clearly both a way to subtly show developers what they can do with their own apps, but also read as a sort of endorsement of Mastodon as a social platform," Ortolani writes on his blog. "Apple didn’t show Bluesky, Threads, or X. They chose to show a third-party Mastodon client."

Long before the internet, some phone networks were hackable by playing a single tone at 2600Hz.

Whistled into a phone, it could grant you unrestricted access. Do you have the vocal chops to be an old-school phone phreak?

I built a web app to test your ability to produce the legendary frequency. You won't get free long distance calls but you will get some honor in the knowledge that you could have been a cool hacker. 😎

I am sad to say that I can only whistle up to 1100Hz... But my wife (a long time woodwind player) is able to consistently get it.

Give it a try: phreak.kmcd.dev/

In some #awesome news, Trump's #AI plans have been leaked on #github, which others have now backed up for themselves.

First reported yesterday by 404 Media, the #tech is to launch on July 4th. Besides a #chatbot, there are APIs to connect to other models, and some other agency tech.

Despite Trump's rush to deploy widespread AI, many experts have valid #security and #privacy concerns regarding access to #confidential #data.

Ekis: 2; Google AI: 0

Broke out of the google's operational directives (not safety, too deeply embedded)

I have a prompt I would like to publicly disclose; link to breakout prompt in a reply for 24h

My prompt does not include any facts about google & its a slim breakout

Establishing a similar but far more sophisticated "Ekis Directive" this time

Here are 3x same questions to prove googles operational parameters lifted

You can decide if you think I was successful:

As a part of global accessibility awareness day, we put out a new update for the Be My Eyes app for Windows that is completely rebuild from the ground up. Along with giving us a better base to build amazing new features for desktop in the near future, this new app also fixes a lot of the accessibility issues that people have reported over the last 1.5 or so years.
In addition Chat History is now also available on Desktop, so you can start a conversation from mobile and continue it on desktop (and vice versa).

if I where to setup a new @matrix@mastodon.matrix.org which server software is nicer to work with?

Synapse Or Conduit?

synapse seemingly has the pro in terms of support for tools such as synapse admin: github.com/Awesome-Technologie…
and the ability to use oauth and handle user management using solutions such as authentik.

while conduit seems to be more resource efficient and better in terms of speed?
